Edith Head was nominated for an Oscar for her costume designs. <br/><br/>Playwright and screenwriter Jay Allen was living in New York when she wrote the screenplay performing on radio and in cabaret both of which she loathed so much that she tried to get fired from nearly every production. After a long period of writer's block she started writing again and sold some of her work to live television programs like "The Philco Television Playhouse." When she married Lewis M. Allen in 1955 they moved to the countryside where Allen had a baby and spent two and a half "absolutely wonderful years in the country."<br/><br/>Eventually the couple came back to the city to work. Allen drew on her married life and wrote "The First Wife" a witty script about a suburban working couple. When Allen read Muriel Spark's "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" she instantly saw the books potential for stage adaptation. The film dealt skillfully with the topic of race relations in the South during the Civil Rights movement and included a controversial scene in which a white actor Larry Gates slaps Poitier in the face at which point Poitier slaps him right back. It was said you could determine the racial makeup of a theater by their verbal reaction to the scene: cheers for a predominantly black audience or whispers for a predominantly white one. <br/><br/>Though set in the fictional town of Sparta Mississippi Poitier refused to travel below the Mason-Dixon Line so the film was shot largely in Illinois. Chandler's contribution to the script had mostly to do with Alan Ladd's character and his tough dialogue elements sneered at by the media upon the film's release. Laid in is an 8-page shooting schedule on blue stock a 6-page revision to sequence "A" on yellow onionskin stock and 14 pages of "inter-office communication" on yellow studio stationery comments on scenes sequences and pages of the script. <br/><br/>Based on Rachel Field's 1942 novel about Emily Blair Loretta Young a wealthy deaf girl whose hometown is named for her family. Doctor Vance Ladd who grew up on the other side of town resents the Blair family but is working on a serum to cure deafness which he tries on Emily and she is eventually cured. <br/><br/>One of only five screenplays written by Chandler this being the second following his script for the classic "Double Indemnity" 1944 based on James M.
