Neuilly-sur-Seine France: Gaumont 1916. Vintage double weight matte finish still photograph from the legendary 1916 silent film serial. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. <br/><br/>The last of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces preceded by "Fantomas" 1913 and "Les Vampires" 1915 combining elements of both its predecessors. In Judex Latin for "judge" Feuillade furthered his vision of the dark enigmatic anti-hero he introduced with the legendary Fantomas character and utilized Musidora-who played the lead character Irma Vep in "Les Vampires"-as the villainess. Judex was a step forward from the criminal Fantomas however predicting pulp heroes to come such as The Shadow and especially Batman in the US: he was a masterful fighter an expert in disguise and kept his headquarters in the subterranean passages beneath a ruined castle lavishly outfitted with high tech gadgets. Feuillade shot "Judex" in 1914 but the outbreak of World War I delayed release in France until 1916 and wide release until 1917. <br/><br/>Pictured here is Judex cunning and silent in a stunt scene where in he attempts what we suspect will be successful entry into an unsuspecting criminal's car while the vehicle is in motion. <br/><br/>11 x 9 inches. Neuilly-sur-Seine France: Gaumont 1913. Vintage double weight matte finish photograph from the legendary 1913 silent film serial. Printed onto heavy card stock for use as the equivalent of a modern day lobby card. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. <br/><br/>The first of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces followed by "Les Vampires" 1915 and "Judex" 1916. Feuillade took the brave task of putting to film Fantomas already wildly popular with European audiences. The character can be seen as an outgrowth of the "hero thief" character Arsene Lupin from turn-of-the-century French fiction. But unlike Lupin Fantomas was completely comfortable killing those who got in his way sadistically and with no small amount of enjoyment. <br/><br/>The scene pictured here shows Jaques Dollon Andre Luguetat at the police station sitting at the center having been framed by Fantomas. The journalist Fandor Georges Melchior standing in for Inspector Juve who is on the lam in disguise as a hobo stands over Dollon as a police inspector sits at a corner desk. Dollon goes on to escape then be captured by Fantomas who murders him cuts off his fingers and throws his body into the river. Fantomas then sews the fingers into a glove and commits further crimes continuing to implicate Dollon who in addition to being innocent is now dead. <br/><br/>11 x 9 inches. In a New York airport at the V.I.P. lounge Frances Andros Taylor is seen off by her husband Paul Burton who is unaware that she plans to leave him for an aging international playboy named Marc Champselle Louis Jourdan. Several other persons are stuck in the lounge due to foggy weather including an Australian businessman and his secretary a filmmaker and his young starlet and a duchess. <br/><br/>Taylor's jewelry in the film came mostly from her own collection and this is Taylor's and Burton's second film together "Cleopatra" was released in the US before "The V.I.P.s" but was released after it in the UK . Thulin plays Ester a translator and intellectual who is traveling back to Sweden on a train with her younger sister Anna Linblom and Anna's son Johan Jorgen Lindstrom. They stop in the town of Timuku and check into an old hotel in a foreign land where the local dialect cannot be understood. Ester who suffers from a terminal lung disease is very protective towards Anna; but Anna resents being tied down by her sickly sister and leaves the hotel room picking up a waiter Birger Malmsten in a nearby cafe. Returning to the hotel room Anna tells Ester about her sexual encounter with the waiter and Ester becomes sexually aroused. Anna leaves for another room in the hotel to continue making love with the waiter. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>The third entry in Bergman's trilogy about faith and redemption preceded by "Through A Glass Darkly" and "Winter Light". A stark and enigmatic allegory fueled by subtle performances from Ingrid Thulin and Gunnel Lindblom. Thulin plays Ester a translator and intellectual who is traveling back to Sweden on a train with her younger sister Anna Linblom and Anna's son Johan Jorgen Lindstrom. They stop in the town of Timuku and check into an old hotel in a foreign land where the local dialect cannot be understood. Ester who suffers from a terminal lung disease is very protective towards Anna; but Anna resents being tied down by her sickly sister and leaves the hotel room picking up a waiter Birger Malmsten in a nearby cafe. Returning to the hotel room Anna tells Ester about her sexual encounter with the waiter and Ester becomes sexually aroused. Anna leaves for another room in the hotel to continue making love with the waiter. Johan helps Ester track Anna down Anna and Anna and the waiter proceed to make love a third time provoking a violent and bitter argument between the sisters. Full provenance available. <br/><br/>Released in France as "L'auberge rouge" and based on the famous 1831 French serial murder case the film centers around a monk Fernandel and a group of travelers who take refuge at inn in the mountains. The inn's host confesses to the monk that he serves poisoned soup to his guests in order to rob their possessions and later dig their graves. The monk tries to save the guest's lives without violating the holy secrecy of the confession. <br/><br/>An uncommon poster designed by Hans Hillmann widely acknowledged as one Germany's top graphic designers whose work consists of over 130 film posters and book designs. Hillmann was awarded in 1992 by the Art Director's Club in New York for illustration. <br/><br/>Shipping billed at cost. Artwork by Jakub Erol. <br/><br/>Hal Erickson: "The Boy Friend" began life as Sandy Wilson's small-scale pastiche of British musical comedies of the 1920s. When the play was brought to America in 1954 its star was the teenage Julie Andrews. Because the musical required a minimum of sets props and costumes it became a favorite of amateur theater groups throughout the world. <br/><br/>But director Ken Russell notorious for his onscreen excesses abandoned the film's simplicity fashioning a humongous parody of the Busby Berkeley film musicals of the 1930s staged on a scale that made Berkeley seem stylistically modest. Fashion model Twiggy plays Polly Browne an aspiring musical comedy star working as stage manager of a production. She is transformed into a star when she replaces leading lady Rita Monroe Glenda Jackson unbilled who twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up. Christopher Gable who plays Polly's on-stage leading man also choreographed the lavish musical numbers. <br/><br/>23 x 33 inches. Faint stains to one edge and a couple of short closed tears.
