Love Affair or The Case of the Missing Switchboard Operator Original poster for the 1967 film
Munich: Spengler and Busselmann 1967. Original German A1 poster for the 1967 Yugoslavian film.

From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available.

Second feature for Dusan Makavejev the most celebrated Yugoslavian director of the 1960s. Included in this montage of stories is an erotic love scene a strudel recipe rat catching and a graphic autopsy of a female victim-all within the context of a love affair between a switchboard operator and a rat catcher. A strong example of the director's radical style combining a decidedly anti-Stalinist stance with the celebration of individual political and sexual freedom using psychological surprise as a means of movement.

The Criterion Collection's essay accompanying their release of the Eclipse set containing Makvejev's first three films including this one notes: "There's never been another filmmaker quite like Du an Makavejev. Even in the 1960s when all of cinema's rules seemed to be breaking down and artists such as Godard Cassavetes and Marker were dissolving the boundary between fiction and documentary.Makavejev stood alone. His films about political and sexual liberation were revolutionary raucous and ribald. Across these his wild collage-like first three films Makavejev investigates-with a tonic mix of earnestness and whimsy-love death and work; the legacy of war and the absurdity of daily life in a Communist state; criminology and hypnosis; strudels and strongmen."

23 x 33 inches non-archivally mounted on board. Hallelujah Die Hugel Hallelujah the Hills Original German poster for the 1963 film
Munich: Peter-Presse / Atlas Films 1965. Original 1965 German A1 poster for the 1963 US film. Designed by Heinz Edelman

From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available.

An iconoclastic utterly American underground film best understood by way of the reactions it receives from viewers outside the US. Time Out Guide notes: "a highpoint from the 'innocent' years of American underground cinema and something of an enduring delight for real film buffs. Mekas' comedy starts from an enthusiastic parody of French 'new wave' concepts like using two actresses to play one character and manages to go on to incorporate references part satire part homage to what seems like every other branch of cinema extant . from samurai movies to Chaplinesque slapstick.hitting the intended tone between love and skepticism."

Jean-Luc Godard: "Next to the two big shots of the New York School Clarke and Cassavetes Mekas seemed a poor relative especially since people got him confused with his brother Jonas Mekas. 'Hallelujah the Hills' proves clearly that Adolfas is someone to be reckoned with. He is a master in the field of pure invention that is to say in working dangerously 'without a net. His film made according to the good old principle "one idea for each shot" has the lovely scent of fresh ingenuity and crafty sweetness. Physical efforts and intellectual gags are boldly put together. The slightest thing moves you and makes you laugh: a badly framed bush a banana stuck in a pocket a majorette in the snow. He shows life as defined by Ramuz: 'As with a dance such pleasure to begin a piston a clarinet such sorrow to be done the head spins and night has come.'"

23 x 33 inches non-archivally mounted on board. Boy Friend The Original Polish poster for the 1971 film
Poland: ZGK 1973. Original Polish A1 poster circa 1973 for the 1971 British-American film. Artwork by Jakub Erol.

Hal Erickson: "The Boy Friend" began life as Sandy Wilson's small-scale pastiche of British musical comedies of the 1920s. When the play was brought to America in 1954 its star was the teenage Julie Andrews. Because the musical required a minimum of sets props and costumes it became a favorite of amateur theater groups throughout the world.

But director Ken Russell notorious for his onscreen excesses abandoned the film's simplicity fashioning a humongous parody of the Busby Berkeley film musicals of the 1930s staged on a scale that made Berkeley seem stylistically modest. Fashion model Twiggy plays Polly Browne an aspiring musical comedy star working as stage manager of a production. She is transformed into a star when she replaces leading lady Rita Monroe Glenda Jackson unbilled who twists her ankle seconds before the curtain goes up. Christopher Gable who plays Polly's on-stage leading man also choreographed the lavish musical numbers.

23 x 33 inches. Faint stains to one edge and a couple of short closed tears. Notations in holograph ink on page 29 noting changes to dialogue for characters Buzz and Howard Ronald Colby Al Freeman Jr. as well as a faint pencil notation on the front wrapper presumably indicating a copy number.

Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947 but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct with his realistic New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material and the results were decidedly mixed despite a widely loved performance by Petula Clark.

The original Broadway production opened at the 46th Street Theater on January 10 1947 ran for 725 performances and won the 1947 Tony Awards for the Best Actor David Wayne as well as Music Direction and Choreography.
