Horizontal fold with a bit of wear to upper wrapper along fold some minor dust marking pencil booking date erased from white area of upper wrapper otherwise an unusually good visually striking example. A vintage campaign pressbook for the 1940 RKO production based on an original script by Nathanael West produced by Howard Benedict directed by Leslie Goodwins and starring Richard Dix Wendy Barrie Kent Taylor et al. West is given prominent full credit for the screenplay on the pressbook and the publicity paper for the film -- status he by no means enjoyed for all of the films he scripted. The upper wrapper is a variant on the poster art for the film with images of the lead players filling the bottom half of the sheet; the upper portion is filled with a spectacular image of a man wing-walking and making a leap to another plane with the title emblazoned diagonally just below. This was only Vidal's second screenplay credit although his writing for television had been substantial to this date. The film was dedicated to Hughes's memory and garnered a considerable array of nominations including for a Hugo and a Nebula and wins a BAFTA in its specialized categories. Usual title stamp on verso faintly ghosted to recto with NSS blindstamp in extreme lower blank margin; a few very minor breaks at intersections of folds otherwise an unusually nice example near fine. A superb three-sheet for the sole feature film written by Dr. Seuss including the song lyrics at the time something of a critical and financial failure but revered by subsequent generations of film viewers as a remarkable melding of almost surreal sensibility and imagery and an exceptional undertaking in set design. The film was directed by Roy Rowland with contributions by producer Stanley Kramer and Allan Scott received co-credit for the screenplay. Peter Lynd Hayes Mary Healy Hans Conried and Tommy Rettig starred. Geisel was disappointed with the end product never undertook another piece of original feature film work and omitted mention of this project from his Random House bio. Folded as issued with a minute break at intersection of two folds discreet marginal staple holes identifying stamps else about fine. A one sheet promoting the 1957 substantially reedited rerelease of the film originally distributed in 1943 as THE NORTH STAR. In its original form the film was one of several projects undertaken by Hollywood at the behest of the U.S. government in order to clarify the occasionally confusing state of Soviet/U.S. relations brought on by the war alliance and to promote a sympathetic understanding of the plight of the common Russian peoples in the face of the Nazi invasion. Samuel Goldwyn enlisted Lewis Milestone All Quiet on the Western Front as director Lillian Hellman as screenwriter and Aaron Copland and Ira Gershwin as composers of the score. The cast included Anne Baxter Dana Andrews Walter Huston Farley Granger and Erich von Stroheim. Margaret Bourke-White recently returned from her coverage of the Eastern Front was hired as still-photographer a role which was quite atypical for her. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards in 1944 but in 1947 it was deemed subversive by the House Committee on Un-American Activities HUAC. Eventually a decade later it was recut - at the cost of some 28 minutes of running time - and distributed in this form to suit the revisionist temper of the times accentuating the battles with the Nazis and diminishing considerably the role of the Soviets and any sympathy for them. Robinson Ida Lupino John Garfield and Barry Fitzgerald et al. London's novel had been filmed three previous times: silent versions in 1913 and 1920 and a sound version in 1930. There are press announcements of its having begun production and then the MPPDA Digital Archive indexes correspondence from Will Hays ca. June 1930 to Albert Harry and Jack Warner taking issue with the marketing in VARIETY of what is promoted as their "Sex-Appeal Sextette" of which this title was #3 coupled with the likes of DIVORCE AMONG FRIENDS EX MISTRESS THE MATRIMONIAL BED A SOLDIER'S PLAYTHING and THE OFFICE WIFE. The tagline for this film was "A Modern Casanova who Believed One Wife was a Good Reason for Ten Sweethearts." Several of the other films in the series were completed even if now "lost' but this property seems to have disappeared without a trace. The authorship of the copy of the script in the Warner Bros.
