L.A. lifeguard Norm Bishop who was working as a stuntman plunged in and grabbed her keeping her afloat. The stunt director and actor Robert Mitchum piloted a raft downriver to get them. Twentieth Century Fox publicists were quick to credit Mitchum with rescuing Monroe.
