Without date or place but before 1811. One page 12mo. Very good. He presents his correspondent with 'deux petits ouvrages sortis de ma plume'. The first was mentioned by 'Mr. Burgess' and the second is 'un petit traite qui a eu le bonheur il y a quelques ans de remporter le prix annuel dans l'Universite d'Oxford'. Signed 'Willm. Roberts'. In a postscript asks to be recommended to any acquaintances Van Santen may have 'a Rotterdam Anvers ou Bruxelles'. Address with broken wafer on second leaf of bifolium. Roberts is perhaps best remembered for the controversy brought on by a passage in Byron's 'Don Juan'. Without date or place [but before 1811?]. unknown

Office of Works London. 8 December 1853. 3pp 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Folded once. Endorsed on reverse of second leaf. At the time of writing Molesworth was serving as First Commissioner of Works in Lord Aberdeen's coalition government. In the year of his death Aberdeen would appoint him Colonial Secretary. The letter begins: 'My dear Merivale Last November I moved for the enclosed return and since then I have spoken to Pal i.e. Viscount Palmerston about it who promised that it should be made. Do you know any thing about it' Molesworth asks when the return will be ready and whether Merivale author of "Lectures on Colonization and Colonies" 1841 has 'in the Library of the Colonial Office a Report by Dr Andrew Smith see Wikipedia of the expedition for exploring Central Africa from the Cape of Good Hope in 1834. It was published in Cape Town.' He asks Merivale to send the work to him if it is there and he asks him to ask the Duke of Newcastle to let him 'had sic again the last despatches from Sir G. On the first page the 'object of this Review' is described as 'to provide a forum for discussion in which the organisations represented on the 18-30 Conference and their individual members can express their views on subject of common interest'. On the last page the 18-30 Conference is described as 'a consultative body' inaugurated in November 1946 'established in recognition of the need to provide a forum for discussion on the interests of young citizens in the manifold activities of national life'. Henriques' paper is on pp.3-4 with pp.5-6 carrying 'some opinions of National Service by the conscripts themselves'. Copies of any issues of this magazine are extremely scarce with the only entries on COPAC at Oxford Cambridge the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. 'Friday' no date but in 1865; on letterhead of The Fortnightly Review Office 193 Piccadilly London. 2pp 12mo. Twenty-seven lines of text. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice. A nice item giving an indication of Lewes's editorial principles at the Fortnightly Review he held the position from 1865 to the following year. Addressed to 'R. S. Poole'. He begins by explaining that he only returned to England the previous night '& found your notes & m.s awaiting me'. He finds Poole's article 'as full of matter as an egg is of meat & I have settled the question of Blank Verse by omitting altogether the pages relating to the Literature which are too scant for so large a subject & which needlessly lengthen a paper already long'. He is returning the omitted pages 'because you may work them into some other article'. 'The title of Lane's Arabian Lexicon' Lewes believes 'would frighten away all but your Shemitic readers' and he has 'altered it to Pagan & Muslim Arabs' but he asks Poole to suggest any other title if he can as 'for a popular periodical titles of papers are of no little importance. Men at the club are easily scared away from a subject which wd interest them if they could be seduced to read'. The piece was published under the title suggested by Lewes in the Fortnightly Review. 15 October 1865. Autograph Letter Signed 'C. S. Henry' from Caleb Sprague Henry. editor of the New York Review to William Whitwell Greenough accepting an article but complaining of Greenough's handwriting and of 'a difficulty in getting Saxon type'.
New York; 26 April 1838. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. 57 lines. Good on lightly-aged paper. Addressed on reverse of second leaf to 'William W. Greenough Andover Massachusetts' with circular postmark in red ink and remains of red wax seal. Regarding 'the article on Bosworth's Anglo-Sax. Dict.' Henry writes: 'From the few first pages that I have read & the glance that I have given at the rest I am satisfied that I shall be glad to print your article. But it is impossible on account of the handwriting to print it in its present state.' Henry is 'quite sure no compositor in the office can make it all out . The piece you know abounds with Saxon words & with unusual names of places authors &c - and to read the handwriting accurately requires a greater familiarity with the subject than I possess. In writing for a review the handwriting should in all cases be plainer than yours . There is another difficulty. I do not know whether I shall not find a difficulty in getting Saxon type.' He suggests 'three ways of getting along in this case' the second being for Greenough 'to be here yourself for a couple of days to correct the press'. 'Turnham Green June 13th.' no year. 1p. 4to. In good condition on aged paper with thin trace of glue from mount on blank reverse and minor chipping beneath flourish of Griffiths's signature. Addressing his letter to 'Dear Sir!' Griffiths suggests that if his correspondent is 'in want of any assistance' in carrying on his 'very extensive literary concerns the Bearer can be well recommended. - He has had a liberal education possesses a good taste & may be useful to you in revising correcting translating &c. &c.' The 'young Gentleman' to whom Griffiths refers is he states 'Grandson to the Celebrated Dr. Doddridge' and he and the recipient of the letter may be 'useful to each other' if the latter has 'occasion for such an Assistant'. Doddridge's grandson would appear to be John Doddridge Humphreys b.1760 of Tewkesbury whose son of the same name edited Doddridge's works. Docketed in a contemporary hand at the head of the page 'Griffiths R'. The engraving of 'Ralph Griffiths LLD' by 'William Ridley sc' taken from the European Magazine 1803 is 9.5 x 13 cm laid down on a paper mount. It is in fair condition on lightly aged paper. 18 Berkeley Square London; 21 February 1834. 7pp. 12mo. On two bifoliums. Good on lightly-aged paper. Written in a difficult hurried hand. Jeffrey begins his letter: 'It grieves me to annoy you in your retreat - especially with dull Scotch matters But they tell me at the Treasury that you are still the person to settle such things as this'. The first part of the letter apparently concerns the Edinburgh solicitors Robertson and Sands who are to lose salaries of £80 each from the crown. Jeffrey is enclosing a petition not present for a 'man who has been 4 months in prison'. He reports that he 'came up sick - but am now pretty well again'. He discusses general matters including 'Littleton's Irish tythe scheme' giving the reasons why he believes it will be 'a failure': 'The plan of letting the landlord have an allowance which the occupying tenant is not to share I think will never do - at least in the way of pacification - and is in itself unjust - If the mere land tax were once redeemed - & existing leases at an end - all would be well enough - the land being then all let tythe free with some <> grant of course <> - It is the transition state which perplexes us'. Francis Jeffrey Lord Jeffrey. Autograph Letter Signed 'F. Jeffrey' to his nephew by marriage John Hunter describing his anxiety on losing Hunter as his 'agent and adviser' on his appointment as Auditor of the Court of Sessions.
Craigcrook. 25 October 1849. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged paper with closed tears unobtrusively repaired with archival tape. Addressed to 'John Hunter Esqre Auditor of Court of Sn.' Written three months before Jeffrey's death the letter begins: 'My dear Hunter - I hope you do not think that I have been forgetful of you - or indifferent to your fortunes - or ungrateful for your very kind expressions - and I firmly believe feelings - towards me - because I may appear to have been slow in offering you my congratulations on your late appointment as Auditor of the Court of Sessions'. Taking up the new appointment will involve Hunter 'relinquishing the situation of Jeffrey's private agent and adviser' and this has been a source of 'some anxiety': 'at my age and with my habits it is a great misfortune and embarrassment'. The letter continues with a discussion of the matter. 'I can easily see that your engagements in your new office may make this matter difficult to arrange - but I wish much that it shld be arranged if possible before the courts meet on 13 Novr'. In a postscript he assures him that he believes that he owes his appointment 'entirely to your own merits - and the general good opinion which these merits have won for you'.
