Janus Kadel studierte von 1953 bis 1960 erst angewandte Malerei, dann an der Hochschule für bildende Künste in Berlin, heute Universität der Künste Berlin, bei Professor Hans Orlowski. Nach seinem Abschluss als Meisterschüler gestaltete er Kirchenfenster in Britz und Schmargendorf (Kunst am Bau) und nahm teil am Berliner Künstlernotstandsprogramm. In den 50er Jahren malte Kadel tachistisch ? Informelle Kunst war die Antwort auf die Kunst im Nationalsozialismus und des Sozialistischer Realismus. Später malte er abstrakt, gegenständlich und abstrahierend-gegenständlich, im Mittelpunkt seiner Bilder stand die menschliche Figur, vor allem das Porträt. Kadel arbeitet mit ihm vertrauten Sujets, deren thematische Varianten überschaubar sind und die sich mit den Begriffen "Menschen, Tierisches und Abstraktionen" kennzeichnen lassen. Seine Bilder schwanken zwischen Form und Antiform. Seine Gestik ist von beeindruckender Kraft, die Ausdruck einer ebenso freien und ungestümen wie reflektierten und kalkulierten Malerei ist. Der Wille zum Erzählen zeigt sich auch dort noch, wo seine Bilder scheinbar gegenstandslos sind. Sein Interesse gilt dem subjektiven Psychogramm, nie aber der Selbstverwirklichung durch malerischen Aktionismus. Das Sehen, das präzise Hinschauen und Aufnehmen von Welt und Wirklichkeit, hat stets den entscheidenden Anteil. Es ging ihm um die Aura, nicht um die Ähnlichkeit. Die Menschen, die Kadel porträtierte, waren meist Personen, die er gut kannte. Die Porträts nehmen typisierende, ja oft sogar karikierende Züge an. Er profitierte vom Gesehenen ohne sich einer aktuellen Stilrichtung anzuschließen. Was das Auge besticht, ist die verwirrende Unmittelbarkeit des Vertrauten in Inhalt und Form. Die Sujets lassen sich auflisten wie Klassiker der Kunstgeschichte: Selbstbildnisse, Porträts aus dem eigenen Umfeld, Ikonen aus dem sozialen und dem kulturellen Leben und Namenlose, Lebende und Tote, Lolitas und Loverboys in selbstvergessenen und aufreizenden Posen - oder nur abstrakt: Existenzen zwischen Leben und Tod, Eros und Gewalt. Kadel suchte nach einer Malweise zwischen radikaler Abstraktion und figurativer Expression in einer suggestiven Farbskala. Seine Malweise ist nicht pastos, seine Malmittel sind sparsam und es dominiert oft der zarte Strich. Er war kein Farbenfetischist: rote Haare, ein gelbfarbenes Stirnband, ein blauer Hut sind schon der Gipfel an koloristischer Opulenz.
