In -4°, cc. 58, piena pergamena e titolo manoscritto al dorso. Frontespizio in cornice xilografica, iniziali e marca editoriale di Mazzocchi in fine. Prima edizione della traduzione in latino di quest’opera di Senofonte fatta da Bessarione (Trebisonda 1403 - Ravenna 1472), Cardinale, teologo e umanista, intorno agli anni ’40 del secolo precedente. Si presume che a scoprire il manoscritto sia stato lo stesso Giano Vitale, autore della lettera dedicatoria che apre il volume. L’opera di Bessarione contribuisce in maniera decisiva alla rivalutazione delle opere di Senofonte, autore pressoché dimenticato nel Medioevo, avvenuta nel Rinascimento, opere che forniranno, relativamente al mondo socratico, una cospicua alternativa alla rappresentazione che ne dà Platone nei suoi Dialoghi. Bellissimo il frontespizio incorniciato (riprodotto in Mortimer, “Italian 16th century books”, p. 583). The first edition of the latin translation of this Xenophon’s work, made by Bessarion (1403-1472), a Cardinal and a humanist, in the first half of the XV century. The manuscript was probably discovered by the very Giano Vitale, author of the dedication letter at the beginning of the volume. Bessarion’s work is a crucial contribution to the revaluation of Xenophon’s work, happened in the Renaissance. Alienation is the subtext of the entire film which became the first of a famous trilogy which later included LA NOTTE and L'ECLISSE. There is a behind-the-scenes photo of director Antonioni with star Monica Vitti whose presence in this film made a major international film actress out of her. She is in five of the photos including two searing portraits. The other two focus on Gabriele Ferzetti who plays the woman whose disappearance triggers the failed search which consumes the greater part of the film. Collation jumps from 980 to 985 at the end of volume two but the text seems complete there. Contemporary vellum with unidentified gilt armorial device to front board. Early signature to title. Pages a bit toned throughout but a sound copy of a scarce book. A mammoth volume of maxims by Flemish-born scholar and librarian Janus Gruterus. Gruterus was a professor of History at the University of Wittenburg until he lost his job in 1592 for refusing to compromise his Calvinist faith and subscribe to the Lutheran Formula of Concord. Orson Welles Oja Kodar Joseph Cotten Francois Reichenbach Richard Wilson Paul Stewart dir: Orson Welles; Janus Film. Effective poster and portrait of Welles for his free-form documentary. The story focused on the notorious art forger Elmyr de Hory and his biographer Clifford Irving. Irving also wrote a fraudulent bio on Howard Hughes and the film goes on to touch upon Hughes' career and that of Orson Welles. The documentary was a set-up as well and a fake on its own thus Welles' entire commentary is a fakery! Included in the film were some of Orson's old Mercury players among them Joseph Cotton Richard Wilson and Paul Stewart. Pure Orson. Unusual and rare piece very difficult to find for Welles' last completed feature. FINE. unknown books
