Im ersten Teil werden neun verschiedene Todesbilder beschrieben: Der Tod als Zerrissenheit des Körpers, als soziale Isolation, die Idee des Totengerichts, Leichnam, Mumie, Seele und Ahnengeist des Toten, der Tod als Trennung und Übergang, als Heimkehr und als Geheimnis kommen hier zur Sprache. Der zweite Teil behandelt eine Auswahl von Riten, in denen solche Todesbilder in sprachliche und rituelle Handlung umgesetzt werden. Vor allem auf die Exklusivität des einen Gottes sowie das immer wieder beschworene Bild eines eifernden, zürnenden, strafenden Gottes führt der Autor mithilfe von Zitaten aus dem Alten Testament diese Disposition zur Gewalt zurück. Auch wenn es einen Zusammenhang zwischen dem ausschliesslichen Wahrheitsbegriff des Monotheismus und der Gewalt in der Sprache gibt, bestreitet Assmann, dass die Gewalt eine dem Monotheismus notwendig eingeschriebene Konsequenz darstelle. ‎About the Book:-The Sanskrit text of the Buddha- Karita was published in the ‘Anecdota Oxoniensia,’ and the following English translation is now included in the series of ‘sacred Books of the East.’ It is an early Sanskrit poem written in India on the legendary history of Buddha and therefore contains much that is of interest for the history of Buddhism beside its special importance as illustrating the early history of classical Sanskrit literature. It is ascribed to Asvaghosha; and although there were several writers who bore that name it seems most probable that our author was the contemporary and spiritual adviser of Kanishka in the first century of our era. About the Author:-A?vagho?a was a Sarv?stiv?da or Mahasanghika Buddhist philosopher, dramatist, poet and orator from India. He was born in Saketa in northern India which is also known as Ayodhya. He is believed to have been the first Sanskrit dramatist, and is considered the greatest Indian poet prior to K?lid?sa. It seems probable that he was the contemporary and spiritual adviser of Kanishka in the first century of our era. He was the most famous in a group of Buddhist court writers, whose epics rivalled the contemporary Ramayana. Whereas much of Buddhist literature prior to the time of A?vagho?a had been composed in P?li and Prakrit, A?vagho?a wrote in Classical Sanskrit. ‎Scarce first edition - editio princeps - of the famous ""Apologia"", the carefully written plea for justice to the Christians made by a philosopher, on philosophical grounds, to the Emperors Marcus Aurelius and his son Commodus, conquerors, ""but above all, philosophers"". Athenagoras complains of the illogical and unjust discrimination against the Christians and of the calumnies they suffer, and then meets the charge of atheism. He establishes the principle of monotheism, citing pagan poets and philosophers in support of the very doctrines for which Christians are condemned, and demonstrates the superiority of the Christian belief in God to that of pagans. This first strongly reasoned demonstration of the unity of God in Christian literature is supplemented by an able exposition of the Trinity. Athenagoras was a Christian apologist of the second half of the second century of whom no more is known than that he was an Athenian philosopher and a convert to Christianity.
