Trinity and Creation A Selection of Works of Hugh, Richard, and Adam of St Victor
Hardcover. 428 p., 1 colour ill., 152 x 229 mm, Languages: English. Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503534589. The Trinity and Creation are central themes in the theology of the Augustinian Canons of the Abbey of St Victor during its time of greatest flourishing in the twelfth century. In this volume, three of the most important Victorine theological works are introduced and completely translated into English for the first time: On the Three Days, by Hugh of St. Victor (d. 1141), a lyrical yet philosophical study of how the power, wisdom, and goodness of God can be known from the things God has made; Hugh?s Sentences on Divinity, lecture notes which show how the divine ideas (?primordial causes?) serve God in creation; and On the Trinity, by Richard of St. Victor (d. 1173), one of the enduring classics of Christian theology, which analyzes the Trinity in terms of love. Also included are two of Adam of St. Victor?s sequences in praise of the Trinity.

Corpus Christianorum. Remigius Autissiodorensis Expositio super Genesim
Hardback, LXVII+251 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503043616. Until the present, the authentic commentary on Genesis by Remigius of Auxerre, the important late Carolingian school-master, has remained unknown. The commentary on Genesis first published in 1723 as the work of Remigius and which also appears in the Patrologia Latina under his name is actually the work of his teacher, Haimo of Auxerre. Bernard Pez, librarian of the Abbey of Melk and editor of the Pseudo-Remigian commentary has based his edition on only two manuscripts (out of 20) which by chance attributed his commentary to Remigius. What Pez did not know was that the manuscripts he used for his edition were part of a tertiary and late family of witnesses, one of whose primary attributes was the misattribution of Haimo's text to Remigius. Now, for the first time, thanks to the Corpus Christianorum, the authentic commentary of Remigius of Auxerre on the book of Genesis appears in print. This edition is based on the 10 extant manuscripts (as well as a collection of excerpts). In addition, the 20 extant manuscripts of Haimo's commentary on Genesis (which the editor is also preparing as a critical edition for Corpus Christianorum) are also thoroughly examined in order to resolve the disputed authorship of the two commentaries by these important school-masters. The new edition contains a thorough analysis of the sources of Remigius' work, setting it in the conext of Carolingian exegesis on Genesis by documenting the relationship between Remigius' commentary and the work of Alcuin, Claudius of Turin, Hrabanus Maurus, Angelomus of Luxeuil, Haimo of Auxerre and Adrevald of Fleury. This source analysis reveals that Remigius was attempting to compose a thoroughly literal commentary on Genesis, extending the exegetical agenda of Augustine's De Genesi ad litteram to the entire book of Genesis. It must be considered of great interest that the editor has discovered a number of passages that are ultimately derived from Jewish exegetical traditions. Languages: Latin.

B.A. Egan (ed.)
Corpus Christianorum. Oswaldus de Corda Opus pacis
Hardback, CLIV+99 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503047911. The Opus pacis, a manual for Carthusian copyists and correctors of Latin manuscripts, was written in 1417 by Oswald de Corda, Bavarian-born vicar of the Grande Chartreuse; it is the earliest known example of an attempt to formulate principles of textual emendation. Although the Opus pacis includes discussions of orthography, etymology, and grammar, it focuses on the practical dilemmas of scribes faced with variant spellings, accents, and pronunciations. The twelve surviving manuscripts of the treatise testify to its popularity throughout the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries: it circulated also outside the Carthusian Order (to the Cologne Crosiers, the Cologne Brethren of the Common Life, the Benedictines of St. Matthias in Trier, and the reforming bishop, Nicholas of Cues) and inspired the compilation of similar handbooks in other religious orders (the Windesheim and Bursfeld Congregations). This thesis offers the first complete critical edition of the text and description of the manuscripts, two of which are autographs. The accompanying study examines the Carthusian tradition of textual uniformity, the biography of Oswald de Corda, the sources and structure of the Opus pacis, and the use and influence of the work within and outside the Carthusian Order. The study concludes by showing how Carthusian piety fundamentally inspired and encouraged these monks' concern for uniformity. Although the attitude of reverence toward the written word could inhibit criticism of sacred texts, the Opus pacis, recommends judicious emendation and looks forward to the work of Erasmus and other religious humanists of the sixteenth century. Languages: Latin.

B.D. Dhawan
Mysticism and Symbolism in Aitareya and Taittiriya Aranyakas [Hardcover]
The entire Vedic Literature had broadly speaking, four different and distinct stages of development over a period of thousands of years since the very pre-historic times. The Aranyakas or the Forest Texts constitute the third important class of literary work. Despite constituting a landmark and rather a turning point in the remarkable philosophic thought of the entire Vedic literature, the Aranyakas have, of the Vedic scholars/researchers. Whatever research had been undertaken in this branch of Vedic literature, it has, invariable, been perfunctory or at the most touched only on in significant aspect of the other wise, rich philosophic contents of the Hermit Texts. A significant feature of this book is that it undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the most intricate spiritual mysteries of the universe. Such deep-seated intricacies of philosophy have been extricated from a plethora of ritualistic moss and characteristically archaic language of the texts under study. The Suppreme-Being who transcends the duality of subject and object cannot, ipso facto be a field, of clear definition and demonstration, but inspite of such inherent limitations, the author has lucidly deciphered. His characteristics including. His omniscience/ omnipresence identity between the universal and individual souls, permeation of the latter even up to the ends of the hair in the human body etc. Even a cursory glance through the work reveals that these two principal Aranyakas are immensely rich in their metaphysical contents. The author has, rather boldly, brought out some of the then prevailing social superstitions like observing of odd omens, their ill-effects and pseudo-mysticism so much so that even the points of comparison and contrast between the two Aranyakas under study have also been meticulously, but briefly brought out. In short, the book presents a panoramic view of the Aryan culture including social conceptions in that hoary past. About The Author:- Dr. B.D. DHAWAM (b. 1926), has been an officer of the Punjab Civil Service and retired from that in 1984 as Deputy Secretary to Government of Punjab, Chandigarh (India). Before joining the service of the State Government, he had acquired the degree of Master of Arts in Economics. He has a vast experience of various civil, revenue, executive and magisterial posts in different districts of undivided State of Punjab (India) and also at the headquarter of the State Government. Despite such onerous administrative responsibilities, Dr. Dhawan’s deep-seated lure to unravel the mysteries of the Absolute-Being induced his for the formal study of Sanskrit language which is a store house of metaphysical knowledge, Starting, abinitio, with the study of this rich language, he passed M.A. in Sanskrit from the Punjab University, Chandigarh in 1977 and acquired the degree of “Doctor of Philosophy’ in Vedic literature from the same Alma Mater in 1981. after attaining these high academic qualifications, Dr. Dhawanm did not rest on his oars. The present literary work on ‘Mysticism and Symbolism in Aitareya and Taittiriya Aranyakas’ is the outcome of his post-Doctrorate academic pursuits. Besides, he has, so far, written as many as fourteen literary articles on Vedic subjects and Valmiki Ramayana. Seven of these have since been published in leading metaphysical journals emanating from the internationally known Vishveshvaranand Vedic Research Institute, Hoshiarpur (Punjab, India) and other places. In fact, Dr. Dhawan is an ardent follower of Rigvedic verse (Ma-Shramism 8.4.7.) ‘that we may never feel tired’. Study of Vedic Philosophy is a life-long ambition with Dr. Dhawan and he is devotedly carrying on his research regarding propagation of knowledge of the single Godhead and realization of the same as orgained in Yajur Veda. Models of Holiness in Medieval Sermons, Proceedings of the International Symposium (Kalamazoo, May 4-7, 1995), organised by the International Medieval Sermon Studies Society (IMSSS).
Hardcover. 422 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 02150050200. Hagiographers and sermonists came together in 1995 to focus on the sermon, the central literary genre in the life of medieval Christians and Jews and the primary medium for conveying and adapting models of holiness to the public. the contribution in this volume elaborate the sermon's role in constructing and diffusing models of holiness in different cultural and chronological categories, from ninth-century Ireland to late medieval Germany, from the synagogues of medieval Spain to the piazzas of fifteenth-century Florence, and from the secret meetings of heretics to the papal court in Avignon. While ideals of holiness remained relatively consistent, the practical interpretations varied widely. Among the topics explored are the swift construction and propagation of Becket's cult after his martyrdom; The reappearance of certain biblical figures in different milieux; the non-utilization of non-biblical models; the interpretation of models for lay listeners and female audiences: chronological shifts in the vocabulary of sanctity; the theological basis for encouraging lay preaching; and attitudes in the eve of the Reformation. Methodological concerns are also elucidated here: the challenge in methodology shared by scholars of Jewish and Christian preaching; the sources other than sermons that bear on preaching; compilers' modifications to their sources; the role sermons played in canonization processes; expanding the definition of a sermon to encopass the activities of lay movements, laywyers, monarchs, and contexts beyond the framework of traditional worship.

Sermon
Hardcover. 998 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503510156. The central literary genre in the life of medieval Christians and Jews, the sermon is an exceedingly rich but until recently under-utiliezd source for scholars of medieval culture. Extant in thousands of unedited manuscripts, sermons provide cruscial insights into the mentalities of medieval people: yet they also pose difficult methodological challenges. The Sermon, volume 81-83 in the series Typologie des sources du moyen age occidental, offers both a practical guide to methodology and extensive coverage of both Latin and vernacular texts. This significant work provides a bridge from sermonists to other scholars, inviting them into the study of this exciting and challenging genre. The Sermon provides guidelines for historical criticism that apply to the sermon genre. An extensive bibliography of works pertinent to the genre, opens the volume; it is divided into sections corresponding to the subsequent chapters. The book's Introduction focuses on the definition of the genre, attempting to establish a working typology of the sermon both as a literary genre and as a medieval text. The Jewish Sermon precedes the chapter on Christian sermons: for the latter the genre's development from Latin to the vernacular serves as the organizational guide. The Latin Sermon is represented in: Early Medieval Homilies and Homiliaries, The Twelfth-Century Monastic Sermon, the Sermons of the Twelfth-Century Schoolmasters and Canons, and the Latin Sermons after 1200. The chapter of medieval preaching in Italy encompasses both Latin and vernacular sermons, and the several chapters devoted to vernacular texts include: Old English; Middle English; Old Norse; French; Spanish; Portuguese and Catalan; and German.Several topics are discussed in each chapter: the definition of the genre, its development, its diffusion, its value for historians, the principal editions and/or manuscripts.

Medieval Sermons and Society: Cloister, City, University
Hardcover. 422 pages., 7 ill., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: English, French, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 02150090200. The twenty-one essays in this volume focus on medieval sermons and their relationship to the society they reflect and to the diverse audiences they address, broadly divided into three groups: cloister, city and university. The chronological range of the essays extends from the early to the late Middle Ages, touching on the major periods in the history of preaching: monastic texts for use within religious communities; the preaching of pilgrim-missionary monks; sermons from the twelfth-century world reflecting heightened Marian devotion and also viewing the urbanisation of society with alarm; the Fourth Lateran Council in 1215 with its influential legislation on preaching; the vast preaching activities of the mendicant orders, including sermons written for communities of religious women, a crucial part of the cura monialium; the growth of the cathedral schools and the mendicant studia into universities where preachers were educated and aids for preaching and sermon collections were generated in great quuantities; the production of vernacular materials for lay audiences; and the persuasive power of preaching in urban centres such as London, or Florence, where Italian humanism exerted an early influence on the rhetoric of sermons. In all these eras and venues, medieval preachers both reflected and shaped the society around them. The essays in this volume illustrate amply the wealth of material that sermons offer for the social, intellectual, religious and political history of the Middle Ages. The volume contains three sections: The Cloister, with an introduction by D.L. Stoudt and articles by Z. Izydorczyk, L. Martin, J. Blaettler, A. Thayer, R.D; Hale, D.L. Stoudt and A. Syring; The City, with an introduction by A. Thayer and articles by P.B. Roberts, B.M. Kienzle, C.A. Muessig, C. Ho, L. Carruthers, J. Dah,us, P. Horner and P. Howard; and The University, with an introduction by J. Hamesse and articles by P.B. Roberts, N. Spatz, D. Pryds, E.W
