Bonizo kommt wohl aus kleinen Verhältnissen; seine Bildung ist eng kirchlich-pastoral. Sich um das antike Wissen zu bemühen, wie es für das karolingisch-ottonische Bildungswesen kennzeichnend war, schien Bonizo überflüssig; Dialektik zu betreiben, wie es im 11. Jahrhundert modern wurde, gar gefährlich . Der Akzent von Bonizos Klerikerbildung liegt im Kirchenrecht und im Juristisch-Administrativen überhaupt. Priestertum heißt für Bonizo nicht, die christlichen Mysterien zu vollziehen und die Sakramente auszuteilen, sondern "Priestertum heißt den Fragenden Auskunft über das Gesetz zu erteilen.
