Fragments of sculptures in terracotta have in fact been found in the archaeological excavations carried out in the region of Jema. These fragments cover the period from 500 B.C to 100 A.D. ; the dates being obtained through Carbon-14 testing. Most of the pieces brought to light are heads belonging to sculptures of over a metre in height; but none has been found whole. Nok art shows a remarkable perfection of style and technique, but since there are no earlier examples both their origin and their evolution still remain a mystery. According to William B. Fagg, artefacts prior to the Nok civilization might have been made of clay or wood and therefore they may have been destroyed without trace in the course of time. New forms of art are only to be found a thousand years later, still in Nigeria, where the Ife civilization fourished. Ife is also the name of the religious centre and the residence of the spiritual head of the Yoruba, called the Oni. To him we owe the establishment of the court art - this is Ife art. It reached its highest level from the X to the XIII century and then declined slowly until its extinction in the XVIII century. Still according to William B. Fagg, Ife art has roots in Nok art, but only in so far as the terracotta is concerned; for Ife art, apart from terracotta, also makes use of iron, stone and, in a masterly fashion, bronze; Ife masterpieces are in fact head-portraits in terracotta and bronze In the XII century, the son of the Oni, Eweka, founded the Kingdom of Benin in Benin, and the town was chosen as the residence of the Oba, King of the Bini, who belong to the ethnic group of the Edo. Towards the end of the XIII century, the Oba asked the Oni of Ife to send him an artist specializing in bronze-casting. Igueba was sent to him, and he is still considered today the greatest bronze-caster of Benin. Benin art has left an exceptional testimony in bronze, terracotta, ivory, wood and iron. There have been many theories about this art, one of these attributes the technical and iconographical development to the influence of the Portuguese, who imported the raw materials, copper, in the form of armbands called "manillas", which the Portuguese merchants traded for slaves. The bronze plaques which clad the Oba 's palace appear to have been of a size copied from the pages of Portuguese books illustrated with vrints. Furthermore, the bronze plagues were made between the XVI and the XVII century, and the arrival of the Portuguese in Benin was en 1472. Benin art is distinguished for its refinement of style and elegance, evident in the ivory masks, in the commemorative bronze heads of the Obas. in the enaraved ivoru tusks that surmounted them, in the portrayal of members of the court, such as flute-players, drummers, horsemen and Portuguese soldiers; and in animals like leopards, cocks and various birds. The classical period of Benin art can be dated frou the XVI to the XVIII century; the late period dates from the end of the XVIII century to the end of the XIX century. There is still a production of Benin art today, but with purely commercial aimst it has completely lost the style which marks true Benin Art. Another ancient civilization existed in the region of Lake Chad, with the peak of its development in the region of the Chari delta : this is the Sao civilization. It originated in the VII century and disappeared in the XII century, leaving as its artistic legacy statuettes and heads in terracotta, with very approximative and rudimentary features, roughly outlined figures with large eyes (like coffee beans) and big lips. These figures and heads were put in jars, also made of terracotta, used as sarcophagi for the burial of the dead. Minor examples of bronze-casting are limited to armbands and necklaces. The heirs of this civilization are the present-day Kotoko. The last ancient civilization is the mysterious 2imbabwe. Accordinq to some scholars, this civilization can be dated between the XI centuru and the middle of the XV century. There is not sufficient data to discover who inhabited the town of Zimbabwe with its cyclopean walls. There remain only a few findings portraying bird-men and birds carved in soastone, Persian ceramics and Chinese porcelain. Perharps one day we will know who these mysterious Africans were. Here ends the survey of ancient African civilization to make way for traditional African Art, which developed in the regions of West, Central and Equatorial Africa. The artistic outline of the various ethnic groups is limited to the pieces which make up the collection I am presenting. " (Vorwort)‎

Although lacking title page this first and perhaps only issue of this religious periodical was definitely published by W. M'Culloch William McCulloch as p. 19 contains a letter addressed to "Mr. M'Culloch" regarding the insertion of a letter in "your first number" of his "Christian Magazine." Not in Early American Imprints 1st series Shaw & Shoemaker. No other copies of this publication have been located. It is not known whether there is any connection to the publication of same name begun in Edinburgh 1797. Although his work as a printer is not well-documented in Early American Imprints Evans or Shaw & Shoemaker this is the William McCulloch of "William McCulloch's Additions to Thomas's History of Printing." Contents: On the Gospel by Eubulus; The Extent of a Minister's Work in Preaching the Gospel by Beart; Observations on the Manner of Travelling in the Holy Land from Harmer; On Christian Hope by Benevolus; Extract from a letter from the Rev. Folio sized stapled magazine binding. Unpaginated about 40 pages. This volume is a combination of articles black and white photographs and many advertisements. Selling space in this issue would have been a fundraiser for the group. A gaggle of Bubbe's would have been on the telephone calling the local businesses and selling the ads. The ads generally have a business name or a message from someone i.e. "Compliments of Mr. and Mrs. David Moskow." There are also vintage product and company advertisements. A photo essay shows the building of the "Y" in 1949 and 1950 other photographs date back to 1906. The majority of candid photos are not captioned most head shots are captioned such as "Harry S. Reiman presents Dr. Samuel Singer Trophies to best campers of the 1949 season." Efrem Zimbalist Yehudi Menuhin Vladimer Horowitz were among the many musicians who performed concerts or recitals there. Some tanning to page borders notably on folded corners. The covers are a silver foil with blue titles and decorations. The top blue banner is rubbed. Wear to covers edgewear folded bottom corner of front cover and first several pages; those turned tips are tanned. Top corner of back cover is creased and top corner of last page is missing. Penciled price on front cover and fep and a small stain in the margin of first third of magazine.
