Folio VIII and first leaf of index repaired at margin with early 16th century printed paper (no loss). Title-page and index-leaf with fairly heavy dampstaining, otherwise mostly faint dampstaining. Large beautiful woodcut printer's device and many beautiful woodcut initials throughout (the first depicting Adam and Eve).‎

‎The very scarce second edition of Suberti's (or Subertus') Manual of pastoral visitation, also called the ""de visitatine episcopali"", an important tool for Renaissance priests.The work originally appeared in 1504, also printed by Remboldt and Gerin, but the present second edition of 1508 is of special interest, as it constitutes the very final collaboration of the two great printers. Ulrich Gerin, who is famous for being the first printer in Paris and the founder of the first printing office in France, began a partnership with the excellent famous printer Bertold Remboldt during the last decade of the the 15th century. Out of this collaboration appeared some excellent works (that are now sought after), and the partnership lasted till Gerin's death (ab. 1509). The last work that they did together was the second edition of Suberti's visitation manual, which appeared on the 8th of March 1508. After the death of Gerin, Remboldt continued on his own.Another edition of the work appeared in 1514. All three editions are scarce.Adams, S:2018.‎

Front free end-paper with 18th century ink-annotation (title, year, etc.). A very light damp stain top the last portion of leaves, a bit heavier to the last two leaves. Otherwise internally very nice and clean. All in all a very nice copy, with only very light scattered brownspotting. Beautifully printed in two columns and in red and black throughout. Pp. 233-294.‎

‎First edition of Alsted’s popular ""Compendium philosophicum"" widely used as a textbook in European universities during the 17th century covering various branches of philosophy, including metaphysics, epistemology, ethics and logic. Johann Heinrich Alsted (1588–1638) was a German-born Calvinist theologian, philosopher, and educator. He is best known for his works on theology, philosophy, and encyclopedic knowledge. Alsted was born in Hesse, Germany, and studied at several universities across Europe, including Marburg, Herborn and Heidelberg. He was deeply influenced by the Protestant Reformation and the scholastic traditions. “The majority of Alsted’s writings were on theology, and in them he displayed the same logical and encyclopedic approach found in the philosophical writings. Throughout the areas of Calvinist influence, form Transylvania to New England, Alsted’s systematic treatises on educational theory, theology, and philosophy exerted great influence in the universities during most of the seventeenth century. ‎The exceedingly rare early (second?) German translation of Bishop Bayly's seminal ""The Practice of Piety"". The book became immensely popular during the 17th century, particularly among Puritans and other Protestant groups and was “the most popular English book in Germany in the seventeenth century. At least sixty-nine German editions were published before 1743” (Damrau, Early Puritan Literature in Germany). We have not been able to trace a single copy of the early edition in the trade. “Lewis Bayly was born around 1575 at Carmarthen, Wales, where Thomas Bayly, who probably was his father, was serving as curate at that time. Lewis and his first wife, who was probably Judith Appleton, had their first son in 1595, followed by four additional children. Bayly secured the living of Shipston-on-Stour, in Worcestershire, in 1597, and three years later was presented to the crown living of Evesham in the same county, where he served as headmaster of the grammar school. Bayly soon became known for his preaching and was appointed a chaplain to Prince Henry within a few years of King James’s accession. In 1606, he was presented to the rectory of Llanedi, Carmarthenshire, but remained largely at Evesham. Though he was a conformed Calvinist who respected the authority of the church, Bayly emphasized Puritan-like piety. Shortly after his wife passed away in 1608, he began to work on turning some of his sermons into what would become a Protestant classic, The Practice of Piety.”(Beeke, Meet the Puritans). ‎Second - being the first illustrated - edition of Bernard of Clairvaux’s seminal work on the Virgin Mary, her virtues, her role in salvation and her theological significance. It is structured as a commentary on the passage from the Gospel of Luke (1:26) where the angel Gabriel announces the Incarnation to Mary. Bernard was a produtive writer on various aspects of the Bible and Christianity. As a devoted Mariologist, he emphasized Mary's central role in Christian theology and preached effectively on Marian devotions, making the present publication one of the most representative and influential of all his works. It was pivotal in shaping Medieval and Renaissance Marian devotion. Antwerp rapidly emerged as a dominant center for illustrated books in the late 15th century, with Gerard Leeu, the printer of the present work, at the forefront of this movement. He was among the most prolific printers of his time, using over 850 different woodblocks across his works:""Antwerp rapidly became the main centre for illustrated books in the Low Countries and Gerard Leeu was without doubt the most prolific printer of them, with more than 850 different woodblocks used in the books he produced. He collaborated with anonymous engravers, whose names came from their place of activity: from the First and Second Gouda woodcutters, to the Master of Haarlem and the First Antwerp Woodcutter. Leeu also obtained many other engravings from colleagues such as Jacob Bellaert (fl. 1483-1486) from Haarlem, or Heinrich Knoblochtzer (c. 1445-1500) from Strasbourg. As evidence of his good relationships with certain other printers, Leeu did not hesitate to lend them woodblocks, as, for example, he did with Johann Koelhoff (c. 1502) in Cologne and Arend de Keysere († 1489) in Ghent. After his death, his collection of woodblocks was dispersed amongst several printers, such as, in Antwerp, Adriaen van Liesvelt (fl. 1494-1500), Dirk Martens, Roland van den Dorp († c. 1500) and Henrick Eckert, as well as the Zwolle-based Peter Os van Breda (fl. 1480-1510). Leeu is a perfect example of a printer who used all available means to get hold of the materials required to illustrate his editions, and, in contrast to some others, he never resorted to using less competent engravers who would simply copy woodcuts that appeared in the publications of competitors."" (Adam, The Emergence of Antwerp as a printing centre, p. 21). The present work has a most fascinating provenance. The earliest recorded ownership of this book places it in the Abbey of the Prémontrés of Berne, located near Heusden in the Netherlands. It was most likely placed in this library immediately or shortly after printing, judging from the inscription on the title-page. The Abbey of Prémontré was among the monasteries suppressed after the French Revolution and it was demolished in 1790. At some point, the book crossed the North Sea and found its way to England. By the mid-20th century, it was housed in Portsmouth, specifically at the Bishophouse, and became part of the Virtue & Cahill Library collection. The book was later sold at Christie’s auction on July 5–7, 1967 (catalogued as Nr. 8), where it was purchased by Bernard Breslauer. In 1968, Breslauer sold the book to Otto Schäfer, the noted German collector and industrialist. Schäfer’s collection in Schweinfurt was renowned for its focus on early printed books and illustrated incunabula. During its time in the Schäfer Collection, the book was exhibited in 1973 as part of the “Druckgraphik des 15. ‎Kiøbenhaffn, (Melchior Martzan og Salomon Sartor), (1632-) 1633. Folio. (37,5 x 24,5 cm.). Nær samtidigt hellæderbind over svært træ. De ægte bind markeret i blindtryk på ryggen. Permerne er begge forsynet med talrige mindre stifter med store hoveder i messing til beskyttelse af permerne ved opslag. 2 lukkestroppe med blanke messingbeslag hvor den lille klo på det ene er bortslidt. Bindet er antageligt fra sidste halvdel af 1600-tallet og ganske velbevaret. Blokken er noget løs, men heftesnorene, som er intakte skal fastgøres på permernes inderside, hvilket kræver noget lim og måske en fornyelse af forsatsbladene. Halvtitelblad, 2 deltitelblade. Kobberstukket titelblad, kobberstukket portræt af Christian IV. (24),353,226,157 blade (af 159 - sidste tekstblad og registerbladet mangler til Ny Testamente). Teksten med talrige træsnit. Halvtitelbladet, som næsten altid mangler, er løst og kantflosset. Et blad løs i heftningen. Enkelte blade i Fortalen med smårifter og lettere kantflossede. En del af de sidste blade i Ny Testamente med slid i ydre marginer. Enkelte blade kantforstærkede. Med talrige træsnit i teksten.‎

‎Kiøbenhaffn, (Melchior Martzan og Salomon Sartor), (1632-) 1633. Folio (binding: 37 x 25 cm.). Bound in a spledid, contemporary full calf binding over wooden boards. Rich, elaborate gilding to both boards and spine. The gilding is vague, especially on the front board, but the tooling is very sharp, and the binding overall is magnificent. With four beautiful, ornamented brass edges to each board and two large ornamented brass clasps. All edges are gilt and beautifully blindtooled. Wear to capitals, where the cords are loosening a bit, and with a bit of loss of leather. A bit of wear to hinges, at the cords, which are showing. But overall the binding is in splendid condition. Also internally extremely well preserved. The title-page has a tiny restored hole to lower right corner, and the first four leaves might have been inserted. They are slightly smaller at the outer margin than the other leaves. But that might also be due to restoration, as the binding has not been tampered with at any point and is completely unrestored. The text is unusually nice, clean and fresh, by far the nicest copy we have ever come across. Pasted-down front end-paper with the ownership signature and lacquered coat-of-arms seal of Severin Svanenhielm (Severin Seehusen (1664-1726) ) as well as the ownership signatures of Søren Schiøtz (1796-1863) (with names of members of his family), C. Th. Zahle and Erik Zahle. With the book plate of William Davignon (d. 1924). The brass corners carry the initials HL and are depicted in Johannes Rudbeck's Svenska Bokband I (fig. 26, p.53). The binding there is dated 1622, whereas our binding is from 1633 or right after. The brass fittings were a commercial merchandise for sale in Germany and probably also in both Sweden and Denmark. Engraved title-page and two engraved half-titles as well as the engraved portrait of Christian IV, all by the royal engraver Simon the Pas. Withoput the half-title, which merely contains the printed words ""BIBLIA / Paa Danske"", which is almost never present. (21 - not counting the engraved title-page and the portrait), 353 (i.e. 354 due to the erroneous double pagination 353), 226, 159 ff.‎

‎Rare first Dutch translation of Byfeld’s “Golden Rules of a Holy Life” provides guidelines for leading a devout and holy life based on the precepts found in the Bible. Nicholas Byfield (1579–1622) was a prominent religious figure in England during the late 16th and early 17th centuries, known for his Calvinistic Puritan beliefs. He was born in Warwickshire around 1579, and although he attended Oxford University, he didn't graduate. Instead, he became a preacher and was initially bound for Ireland but ended up staying in Chester due to his popularity as a preacher there. In 1611, Byfield became involved in a controversy regarding Sabbath observance when a young man he had instructed, John Brerewood, refused to work on Sundays based on Byfield's teachings. This sparked a debate between Byfield and Edward Brerewood, John's uncle, which was later published as ""A Learned Treatise of the Sabaoth"" in 1630. In 1615, Byfield became the vicar of Isleworth, where he served diligently until his death in 1622 at the age of around 43. He suffered from kidney stones for many years, which ultimately contributed to his death. Byfield was survived by his wife Elizabeth and at least eight children, one of whom was named Adoniram.
