‎The exceedingly rare reissue (Vol 1 of 2 only) of Boyd’s most substantial and arguably most famous prose treatise, a text written in the ‘Ars moriendi’-tradition. It ""must be accounted among the scarcest of seventeenth century Scottish books"" (Weir, Bibliographical Notices of 'The Last Battell of the Soule in Death'). Zacharie Boyd (c. 1585–1653) was a Scottish clergyman, poet and supporter of Presbyterianism. He studied at the University of Glasgow and served as minister of the Barony Church and Vice-Chancellor of the university. Boyd is best known for his ‘Boyd's Bible’, a paraphrase of Scripture into Scottish verse and the present work. Lowndes only list the 1629-edition.‎

‎Rare second folio-edition of Boys’s collected works first published in 1622 – allegedly being the earliest theological book to contain a section in Thanksgiving for the failure of the Gunpowder Plot"" pp. 779-90 (Maggs, 1943). This present second edition was the basis for the 1854 photolithographed reprint. “Boys himself compiled a one-volume edition of his works in 1622, which included his systematic sermonic exposition of the church’s prescribed lectionary—a ten year project. It also included five miscellaneous sermons, and eleven books of postils first published between 1609-1617. The postils were so popular that they were reissued at least a dozen times in the first decade. The SDG reprint is photolithographed from an 1854 edition published in New York by Stanford and Swords, which is based on a 1629 London edition. It contains Boys’s exposition of Scripture passages used in the services of Morning and Evening Prayer and Holy Communion in The Book of Common Prayer, as well as his writings on the Psalms, expositions on the epistles and gospels, and comments on the Apostles’ Creed, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Ten Commandments. Spurgeon said Boys was “one of the richest of writers,” being “all essence.” Indeed, Boys’s writing is lively, witty, clear, and profound. He made complex doctrine plain and practical.” (Beeke & Pedersen, Meet the Puritans) John Boys (1571–1625) was an English churchman and theologian who served as the Dean of Canterbury Cathedral. He was a prominent figure in the Church of England during the early 17th century. Boys is best known for his extensive writings on theology and biblical commentary, particularly his work ""An Exposition of the Dominical Epistles and Gospels Used in Our English Liturgie"" (1622). This work provided detailed explanations and interpretations of the biblical passages used in the Anglican liturgy, aimed at assisting clergy and laypeople in understanding and applying these texts to their lives. Boys was highly regarded for his scholarship and theological insights, and his works were widely read and influential within the Church of England during his lifetime and beyond. His works were translated into German in 1683, and again in two volumes in 1685. It was reprinted in English in 1997 taken from 1854-edition published by Stanford and Swords, New York.‎

Upon his death, his position passed to his son Johann, known as Buxtorf the Younger (1599-1664), and then to his grandson, Johann Jakob (1645-1704). Throughout his life, he worked on the Masoretic text of the Old Testament, largely established by the Tiberian School in the 9th century. ‎"BUXTORF, JOHANNES.‎

‎Tiberias, sive Commentarius Masorethicus.‎

‎Basle, Ludovic König, 1620. 4to. In contemporary limp vellum with yapp edges and title in contemporary hand to spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Light soiling and wear to extremities. Previous owner name (Petrus Jacobi Holmius) to title-page. Neat marginal annotations in contemporary hand throughout, otherwise nice and clean. (16), 324 pp.‎

‎The uncommon first edition of Buxtorf’s work on the tradition of the Masoretes of Tiberias. Here Buxtorf discusses various aspects of Tiberias, including its geographical, historical, and cultural significance. Intended as the supplement to his famous Biblia Rabbinica the present work gained fame and acknowledgment in its own right. The work is structured into three sections: Commentary on the Masorah, Key of the Masorah, and Critical Commentary. While Buxtorf maintains the belief that the Masoretic text represents the authentic version of the Bible, he embraces Levita's groundbreaking theory asserting that the masoretic vocalization and cantillation marks originated with Ezra and the Men of the Great Assembly. ""Tiberias was the first Latin language introduction to biblical scholarship, and its paratextual elements, and the Masoretic apparatus"" (The Oxford Handbook of Early Modern Theology, 1600-1800, edited by U.L. Lehner et al., 2016). ""Tiberias is Buxtorf’s fullest and most impressive work on the history of the biblical text. He conceived it as the first of four proposed guides to the four parts of the Basel rabbinical Bible edition: Hebrew text, Targums, rabbinical Bible commentaries and Masora."" (Burnett). Tiberias holds importance in Jewish history, particularly during the period of the Talmudic and post-Talmudic eras. The city is located on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee and is associated with the development of Jewish traditions and scholarship. While Buxtorf is perhaps more famous for his Hebrew lexicons and grammatical works, ""Tiberias, sive Commentarius"" reflects his broader interest in Jewish history and culture, specifically focusing on a city that played a notable role in the development of Jewish learning and tradition. Johann Buxtorf (1564-1629), the ""Master of the Rabbis,"" despite being a Protestant, was a Hebrew professor at the University of Basel for thirty-nine years. Upon his death, his position passed to his son Johann, known as Buxtorf the Younger (1599-1664), and then to his grandson, Johann Jakob (1645-1704). This text defined the authoritative biblical canon within Judaism and served as a reference for most Protestant and Catholic translations of the Old Testament. Buxtorf's work was enlarged and expanded by his son Johannes Buxtorf the Younger, in a second edition printed in 1665.‎

‎The rare first edition of Bøgh’s final publication. A few years before his death, he considered starting a weekly publication where religious teachings would be addressed in verse. He had written over a hundred sheets but lacked the money and time to publish it. Only a fragment, the present, was published. Niels Seidelin Bøgh (1717—1778) was a pastor born in Trige, Denmark. As a theological candidate, he published a large original collection of hymns titled ""Den sjungende Theologus"" in 1742. In 1743, Bøgh became a ship's chaplain and accompanied Danneskjold's squadron to Algiers in 1746. After his return, he wrote ""Den algierske Freds Historie"" (The History of the Algerian Peace) in verse. In 1747, he was appointed parish priest in Kerteminde, became district provost in 1761, and died on August 23, 1778. OCLC only list two copies, both in Copenhagen. Not in Biblioteca Danica.‎

‎Quatuor Evangelicorum scriptorum concordia & locorum quae in ijs occurrunt, difficilium ac dubiorum explicatio (+) In epistolas Sancti Apostoli Pauli ad Corinthios priorem et posteriorem expositio litteralis. - [HARMONIZING THE FOUR GOSPELS]‎

‎Rare first edition of these two work by Calixtus, the first work being a fine representation of his general theological viewpoints" creating unity and understanding among Christians, Protestants as well as Catholics. In this work he is trying to harmonizing the four Gospels and reconcile apparent discrepancies among the Gospel and providing explanations for unclear passages found within them. Georg Calixtus (Or Georg Calixt or Georg Callisen, 1586-1656), was a German Lutheran theologian and philosopher. He is best known for his attempts to reconcile Protestant denominations and for his efforts to bridge the gap between Protestantism and Catholicism during the post-Reformation era. His approach, known as syncretism, sought to find agreement among various Christian denominations on essential theological points while allowing for diversity in non-essential matters. However, Calixtus's views were controversial within the Lutheran community of his time. He faced opposition from more conservative theologians who viewed his efforts as compromising essential doctrines. Despite this, at times fierce, opposition Calixtus's ideas influenced later theological movements and contributed to the development of ecumenical dialogue between different Christian traditions.‎

All editions are rare. “Caryl on Job will not exhaust the patience of a student who loves every letter of the Word.’ ‘Caryl must have inherited the patience of Job to have completed his stupendous task. It would be a mistake to suppose that he is at all prolix or redundant" he is only full. In the course of his expounding he has illustrated a very large portion of the whole Bible with great clearness and power. He is deeply devotional and spiritual. He gives us much, but none too much. His work can scarcely be superseded or surpassed.” (Spurgeon). “CARYL, JOSEPH (1602–1673), English Nonconformist divine, was born in London in 1602. He graduated at Exeter College, Oxford, and became preacher at Lincoln’s Inn. He frequently preached before the Long Parliament, and was a member of the Westminster Assembly in 1643. By order of the parliament he attended Charles I. in Holmby House, and in 1650 he was sent with John Owen to accompany Cromwell to Scotland. In 1662 he was ejected from his church of St Magnus near London Bridge, but continued to minister to an Independent congregation in London till his death in March 1673, when John Owen succeeded him. His piety and learning are displayed in his ponderous commentary on Job.” (Encyclopedia Britannica)‎

‎Later edition of Chemniz’ collected works. Chemniz had lectured on Melanchthon's 'Loci Communes' from which lectures he compiled his own 'Loci Theologici', a system of theology (the first three parts of the present book). Martin Chemnitz (1522–1586) was a German Lutheran theologian and reformer who played a significant role in the development of Lutheran doctrine during the 16th century. He is often referred to as the ""Second Martin"" after Martin Luther, due to his prominence within the Lutheran tradition. Chemnitz is best known for his extensive work in systematizing Lutheran theology to which this present work is a fine example. He was a key figure in resolving theological controversies that arose after Luther's death and played a crucial role in shaping the direction of the Lutheran Reformation after Luther.‎

‎The rare first edition – here with a most interesting Royal provenance - of Cohen’s seminal work, being the first comprehensive work on the history of Jews in Denmark. The book examines the impact of legal enactments on their emancipation, tracing their status from being permitted to settle in Denmark in 1684 to gaining full Danish citizenship in 1814. From the stamp on the title-page we know this copy has been part of Fredericia's Garrison Library. Prince Frederik, Later King Frederik VII was banished by his farther-in-law, King Frederik VI to Fredericia because of his scandalous behaviour towards his wife, princess Vilhemine, the youngest daughter of the King. The Prince must have kept the book, which later with his return to Copenhagen, went into the Royal Private Library (Kongens Haandbibliotek). Asser Daniel Cohen (1794–1863), a Jewish theologian and author, became a royal catechist for Jews in Funen and Lolland-Falster. ‎"CUDWORTH, RALPH.‎

‎The true intellectual system of the universe: The first part wherein all the reason and philosophy of atheism is confuted and its impossibility demonstrated.‎

‎London, Richard Royston, 1678. Folio (320 x 220 mm). In contemporary full calf, spine rebacked. Wear to extremities, boards with numerous scratches and corners bumped, with loss of leather. Ex-libris (Danish author and philosopher Carl Henrik Koch) to pasted down front end-paper. Stamps to verso of frontispiece and title-page and verso of p. 899 (""MVSEVM BRITANNICVM"" and ""British Museum / sale duplicate / 1787""). Light marginal browning throughout, but generally internally nice. (20), 84, 97-156, 155-899, (87) pp. + frontispiece. Complete with the often lacking advertisement leaf.‎

‎First edition of Cudworth’s only work of philosophy to be published in his lifetime – arguably one of the most ambitious and intellectually ambitious philosophical works of the 17th century. Here Cudworth sought to unite classical philosophy with Christian theology while offering a systematic refutation of atheism and materialism. His work had a significant impact on early modern philosophy shaping discussions on metaphysics, theology and the nature of divine providence. “(The present work) as published in 1678 is only the first of three volumes which Cudworth had planned to write with the same over-all title, but he defends it as a self-standing work. In it he seeks to provide an anti-determinist defence of theism against scepticism, atheism and materialism, and to demonstrate the compatibility of true philosophy with true religion. In so arguing, he probably had in mind the anti-atheist arguments of book X of Plato’s Laws. The last chapter, in particular, contains many, often extensive, arguments with his philosophical contemporaries (Descartes, Hobbes and Spinoza).” (SEP) “Arguably it constitutes the most important statement of innate-idea epistemology by any British philosopher of the seventeenth century …. The full extent of Cudworth’s legacy in philosophy has yet to be mapped out. In England John Ray, John Locke (his critique of innate ideas notwithstanding), the third Earl of Shaftesbury, Sir Andrew (Le Chevalier) Ramsay, Richard Price and Thomas Reid all acknowledge their debt to Cudworth. In the European Enlightenment, Cudworth was the focal point of a dispute between Bayle and Le Clerc in 1703–1706. His concept of Plastic Nature was taken seriously in France as late as the nineteenth century. Thanks to J.L. Mosheim’s Latin translation (1733) Cudworth’s writings were mediated to the German Enlightenment’ (Sarah Hutton, Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century British Philosophers, Thoemmes Press, 2000). ""The True Intellectual System is primarily a critique of what Cudworth took to be the two principal forms of atheism — materialism and hylozoism [a term coined by Cudworth for the doctrine that all matter is in some sense alive]. The materialist Cudworth had especially in mind is Thomas Hobbes. Cudworth attempts to show that Hobbes had revived the doctrines of Protagoras and is therefore subject to the criticisms which Plato had deployed against Protagoras the Theaetetus. On the side of hylozoism Strato is the official target. However, Cudworth’s Dutch friends had certainly reported to him the views which Spinoza was circulating in manuscript. Cudworth remarks in his Preface that he would have ignored hylozoism had he not been aware that a new version of it would shortly be published"" (John Passmore, Encyclopedia of Philosophy).‎

‎Expositio Epistolae D. Pauli ad Colossenses. - [""INFERIOR TO NO WRITING OF THE KIND""]‎

‎Cambridge, Thomas Buck, 1639. Folio. In contemporary full calf binding. Blind-tooled framed to boarders of board. Small paper-label pasted on to top of board. Light soiling and wear to boards and capitals chipped. Title within a border of printer's ornaments, woodcut initials and tailpieces and text within ruled border. Occssional light marginal miscolouring, but an overall good copy. (8), 415, (14) pp.‎

‎Third edition of Davenant's most important and influential theological work. This classic on Colossians, which includes a biography of Davenant and copious notes by Josiah Allport, minister of St. James’s, Birmingham (who also translated it from Latin in 1831), is based on lectures given to students at Cambridge. Davenant's work delves into the initial two chapters of Paul's letter and offers detailed interpretations and practical insights, examining every part of Colossians with exegetical and homiletical commentary. It was presented during his commencement to the post of Theology Professor at Cambridge. “James Hervey said of this commentary, “For perspicuity of style and accuracy of method" for judgment in discerning and fidelity in representing the Apostle’s meaning for strength of argument in refuting errors, and felicity of invention in deducing practical doctrines, tending both to the establishment of faith and the cultivation of holiness, it is inferior to no writing of the kind and richly deserves to be read, to be studied, to be imitated, by our young divines.” Charles Bridges said, “I know no exposition upon a detached portion of Scripture (with the single exception of Owen on the Hebrews) that will compare with it in all points.” (Beeke, Meet the Puritans). John Davenant (1572-1641) was an English academic and bishop of Salisbury from 1621. Educated at Queens College, Cambridge, he was elected a fellow there in 1597, and served as its President from 1614 to 1621. From 1609 onward, he served as the Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity, from which he was called away by James I to represent the Church of England at the Synod of Dort in 1618, along with Samuel Ward, Joseph Hall and George Carleton. The first edition was published in Cambridge in 1627, the second in 1630, and the present third in 1639. Provenance: from a large Danish estate.‎

‎Frankfurt, Schleich & Klein, 1643. 12mo. In a nice contemporary half calf binding with five raised bands and richly gilt spine. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Vague marginal dampstain affecting first leaves, but overall a nice and clean copy. (22), 650 pp. + 1 engraved plate.‎

‎German translation, first published in 1638, of Daniel Dyke’s “Mystery of Self-Deceiving”. “All of Dyke’s treatises were published posthumously by his brother, Jeremiah Dyke, vicar of Epping, mostly from 1614 to 1618. Daniel Dyke’s most frequently reprinted book, The Mystery of Self-Deceiving, based on Jeremiah 17:9, is a detailed anatomy of the “gospel-hypocrite,” i.e., one who claims to know Christ but whose life reveals little self-knowledge and no fruit. Thomas Fuller, a noted historian and a younger contemporary of Dyke, said the book “will be owned for a truth, whilst men have any badness [in them], and will be honored for a treasure, whilst men have any goodness in them.” (Beeke, Meet the Puritans). The work was translated into German by Theodore Haak (1605 – 1690), a German Calvinist scholar, resident in England in later life. In 1625, Haak travelled to England where he visited Oxford and Cambridge Universities. A year later he returned to Germany and he brought back from England a copy of Daniel Dyke's ‘Mystery of Self-Deceiving’, which he shared with his Protestant circle. Haak translated it into German in 1638.‎

‎Sammelband with two work by Sinold, here written under the pseudonym of Faramond, first edition of “Gedancken über die Eitelkeit der Welt” and a later edition of “Die Klugheit derer wahren”. Both works express Sinold’s focus on moral and critique of worldly vanities all in the context of his pietistic values. Philipp Balthasar Sinold, also known as von Schütz (1657–1742), was a publicist, writer, and theologian. He used the pseudonyms Ludwig Ernst von Faramond (as here), Amadeus Creutzberg and Irenicus Ehrenkron. Coming from the noble Sinold family, he was educated at the Gymnasium in Weissenfels and studied law at the University of Jena. After serving in the Duke of Tuscany's guard cavalry in Florence, he returned to Germany and lived as a private scholar in Leipzig where he published ""Die europäische Fama"" (1704) and the first ""Zeitungs-Lexikon."" As ""Faramond,"" he wrote satirical works criticizing his contemporaries as here. As ""Amadeus Creutzberg"" he authored devotional writings.‎

‎Threnoikos. The House of Mourning. Furnished with Directions for, Preparations to, Meditations of, Consolations at, the Houre of Death. Delivered in XLVII preached at the Funeralls of divers faithfull servants of Christ. - [""A MILESTONE IN THE HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH FUNERAL SERMON""]‎

‎London, John Dawson, 1640. Folio. In contemporary full calf with five raised bands. Small paper-label pasted on to top of spine. Extremities with wear, boards with scratches. Inner hinges split. First and last leaves slightly browning but internally generally fine and clean. Previous owner's name to title-page. (16), 448, (2), 449-647, 678-916 pp. (complete).‎

‎Exceedingly rare first edition of this classic which “stands like a milestone in the history of the English funeral sermons” (Houlbrooke, English Preachers Gathered in the House of Mourning).Patrick Collinson, historian of English puritanism, described it as “a kind of apotheosis” of the genre and is considered one of the most significant contribution to the literature on mourning and spirituality in the 17th century. “Printed funeral sermons grew in popularity in the seventeenth century" between 100 and 200 had been printed by 1647, with only 20 known to have been printed in the Elizabethan era. Their output increased from then until the turn of the eighteenth century. Funeral sermons were usually printed singly, although in 1647 a collection of 47 funeral sermons by eminent preachers was printed, entitled Threnoikos: The House of Mourning , demonstrating the popular place of the funeral sermon in the seventeenth century as a guide to leading an exemplary life, preparing for death, meditating on the next life, and responding to the death of loved ones.6 Funeral sermons thus held an important place in the memento mori tradition, and equally in the literature of exemplary reading for women. A higher proportion of funeral sermons for women were reprinted than those for men, making these interesting sources of conceptions of female piety.” (Molekamp, Femke. “Seventeenth-Century Funeral Sermons and Exemplary Female Devotion: Gendered Spaces and Histories.”) Funeral sermons in 17th century England were integral to the religious, cultural, and social fabric of the time, reflecting the prevailing beliefs, values, and practices surrounding death and mourning. Through their thematic richness, rhetorical eloquence, and pastoral sensitivity, these sermons provided comfort, guidance, and spiritual sustenance to the bereaved while reaffirming the central tenets of Christian faith. As artifacts of religious discourse and cultural expression, funeral sermons offer valuable insights into the diverse ways in which early modern English society grappled with life, death, and the afterlife.‎

‎"FERRER, VINCENTIUS.‎

‎De Fine Mundi. - [ONLY KNOWN COPY OF THIS INCUNABLE-EDITION ON PRIVATE HANDS - THE HUTH-COPY]‎

‎Speier, Johann and Conrad Hist, (Colphon states 1455 which refers to when Ferrer was cannonized as a saint), circa 1485, no later than 1492. 4to (210 x 147 mm). In a very nice late 19th-century full sprinkled calf binding executed by Francis Bedford (signed in lower margin of verso of front board). Six raised bands and gilt lettering and ornamentation to spine. Double ruled fillets to recto and verso of borders of boards. Single gilt line decoration to edges of boards. All edges gilt. Old bookseller description and gilt ex-libris (Henry Huth (1815–1878), English banker and prominent bibliophile) pasted on to pasted down front end-paper. A few annotations in pencil to pasted down front end-papers. A few early marginal annotations and underlingnings. Initials in contemporary hand-colouring. 32 lines to a page. Washed. 19 ff. (a8- b-35). Wanting the final blank (c6). This is one of the few books which contains the brothers' joint colophon ""ICH"". Housed in a cloth clam-shell box.‎

‎Exceedingly rare, early incunable-edition of Ferrer’s highly popular, influential, and somewhat unsettling work containing his apocalyptic vision and eschatological preaching. Although several incunable-editions exist, they are rarely found in the trade and all are of the utmost scarcity. Of this edition we are only aware of one copy on private hands - namely, the present one, which last appeared for sale in 1985 (Bloomsbury Book Auctions, no. 45). The dating of this particular edition has puzzled bibliographers and still seems to leave many questions open: The colophone states 1455, which has often been referred to as an error in the year of imprint"" in fact, it refers to the year that Ferrer was cannonized as a saint. For some reason (unknown to us), the Bloomsbury auction description dated it to 1491-1492. In their authoritative “Die Brüder Johann und Conrad Hist und ihre Drucke”, Engel and Stalla concluded that it must be from 1485, and the Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke (GW) dates it to around 1483. The Vatican dates it to circa 1485. The Editio Princeps was printed by Gerardus de Lisa in Treviso in 1475. A second edition was printed, in Treviso or Vicenza, by Hermann Liechtenstein in 1477, and a third edition was printed in 1479 in either Toulouse or Lyon. The Zeninger-press in Nurnberg then printed a copy in 1480 or 1481. Despite being printed relatively frequently in the last quarter of the 15th century all editions are scarce and rarely find their way to the trade. The two brothers Hist settled in Speyer in January 1483. Only five incunabule editions from their joint production bear a colophon naming them both, i.e. Johann and Conrad (which this present edition does). These are dated between 1483 and 1488. Notably, in all five colophons, the printers' names are abbreviated as ""ICH"" rather than written out in full. Johann died or left at some point, but the exact date is unclear"" Engel and Stalla mention 1489, others have stated 1492. Conrad Hist continued printing independently until 1515 and subsequently worked as a publisher and bookseller. Vincent Ferrer (1350–1419) was a Dominican friar from Valencia, Spain, known for his fiery preaching and missionary work across Europe. He was canonized as a saint in 1455.The present work reflects Ferrer's apocalyptic vision and eschatological preaching. Ferrer believed that the world was nearing its end and that humanity needed urgent repentance to prepare for the Final Judgment. His sermons and writings were deeply influenced by Medieval apocalypticism, writing on subjects like the Antichrist, the Last Judgment and divine retribution. Ferrer’s somewhat distressing writings and the fact that he thought he was divinely appointed to warn the world of its impending end earned him the nickname ""Angel of the Apocalypse"". The Huth library. A catalogue of the printed books, vol 2, p. 512. Not in BMC"" not in Goff. GW 09852. OCLC lists copies in Germany, 1 copy in Scotland, and 1 copy in The Vatican (Inc. ‎Fine copy of this later edition of two of Jesephus' most important works. The later work is a translation of a Latin christological version of Josephus' De bello Judaico, dating from ca. 367-374 A.D. It is of uncertain authorship but cited as the work of ""Hegesippus"" or ""Egesippus."" It was transmitted among the works of and sometimes attributed to Ambrose, Bishop of Milan Titus Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian who was born in Jerusalem. He fought against the Romans during the First Jewish–Roman War as head of Jewish forces in Galilee, but surrendered in 67 CE to Roman forces led by Vespasian. After Vespasian became Emperor in 69 CE, he granted Josephus his freedom, at which time Josephus assumed the emperor's family name of Flavius. Josephus recorded Jewish history, with special emphasis on the first century CE and the First Jewish–Roman War (66–70 CE), including the Siege of Masada. His most important works were The Jewish War (c. 75) and Antiquities of the Jews (c. 94). The Jewish War recounts the Jewish revolt against Roman occupation. Antiquities of the Jews recounts the history of the world from a Jewish perspective for an ostensibly Greek and Roman audience. These works provide valuable insight into first century Judaism and the background of Early Christianity, although not specifically mentioned by Josephus. Josephus' works are the chief source next to the Bible for the history and antiquity of ancient Palestine. For centuries Josephus' works were more widely read in Europe than any book other than the Bible. They are an invaluable eye-witness to a momentous turning point in Judaism, Christianity, and Western civilization. The present edition was first published in 1569. Graesse III, Pp. 481-482‎

This, her first novel, was written while she was still a practising Anglican. The work focuses on the issue of confession, and it was very well received. In ""The English Review"", Mr. Gladstone said of it: ""the least didactic and the most instructive"" of religious novels. ‎Rare first Dutch translation of Thomas Goodwin’s collected theological works. Thomas Goodwin (1600–1680) was a prominent English Puritan theologian. Goodwin was known for his deep Calvinist theology, practical spirituality, and emphasis on the application of scripture in Christian life. He served as chaplain to Oliver Cromwell, and was appointed by Parliament as President of Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1650. Christopher Hill places Goodwin in the ""main stream of Puritan thought"". “Most of Goodwin’s theological writings were written when he was older and were published after he died. His large corpus reveals a pastoral and scholarly zeal that is rivaled by few Puritans.” (Beeke, Meet the Puritans).‎

‎"GUNNERUS, JOHANN ERNST.‎

‎Beweis von der Wirklichkeit und Enigkeit Gottes aus der Verhuft. - [""ONE OF THE FOUNDING FARTHERS OF MODERN NORWEGIAN CULTURE""]‎

‎Jena, Woitwe, 1748. 8vo. In contemporary half calf. Binding with wear. A few holes to spine. Hinges a bit weak. Previous owner's name to title-page and lower outer corner of title-page with loss of paper (not affecting text), otherwise internally nice and clean. (16), 533, (1) pp.‎

‎First edition of this exceedingly rare philosophical treatise aiming to demonstrate the existence and unity of God through rational argumentation – a fine early example of Scandinavian Enlightenment philosophy. In this work Gunnerus critiques and builds upon traditional arguments for God's existence, such as those by Anselm and Descartes. He uses a logical method, referencing thinkers like Wolff, Leibniz, Darjes, and Descartes, as well as critics of Wolffian philosophy including Joachim Lange and Christian August Crusius. “Although recognized by scholars of eighteenth-century Danish-Norwegian cultural and political history as an influential figure in the Norwegian Enlightenment, with impressive transnational connections, Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718– 1773) receives scant mention outside the Norwegian discourse in discussions on the siècle des lumières. His influence and accomplishments, especially in the context of eighteenth-century ecclesiastical politics, as well as his scholarly explorations in diverse disciplines, distinguish him as one of the founding fathers of modern Norwegian culture. Born in Christiania, the son of a physician, Gunnerus’ intellectual preoccupation extended beyond theology.2 In line with the decree issued by King Christian VI in 1741 that all Danish-Norwegian theology students study at the University of Halle, Germany, which was a centre of multiple influences, such as the Protestant Reformation, Pietism and German Enlightenment, Gunnerus also attended lectures on natural history and law upon enrolling at the university in 1742. In 1744, he moved to Jena, where he graduated, worked as a tutor, and eventually, in 1753, became an adjunct there at the Department of Philosophy. However, within a year he left for Denmark, where he first became a pastor, then appointed professor in Copenhagen and eventually bishop in Norway, at a time when the entire country had a total of only four bishops and 480 pastors.3 From 1758 to 1773, Gunnerus served as bishop in Trondheim and became, in 1760, one of the founders of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters. In all these areas, he maintained close contact with diverse circles of Continental scholars, and not just with those he had known during his time in Halle and Jena. As such, he can be considered an important agent of cultural transfer between Norway and mainland Europe, and vice versa.”( Stengel, Johan Ernst Gunnerus and the Quest for the Soul in the Eighteenth Century). Exhibited as no. 40 in the Danish Bibliophile Association's 60s Anniversary Exhibition.‎
