By shedding light on the role played by Carthusian spirituality and practices in Petrarch?s life and work and following a common line of philosophical and theological development through his writings, this book argues that there still are lessons to be learned in both about the relationship between religion and literature, theology and spirituality. The fourteenth century saw an exponential rise in charterhouses across Europe. During this period of growth, the cloister walls protecting the silence and solitude of the relatively small and isolated semi-eremitical Carthusian houses became more porous, pliable, and open to the outer world. Although still considered at the forefront of Christian piety and asceticism, the Carthusians began to be more clearly identified with their newly acquired taste for the arts, literature, and architecture. Gradually, charterhouses became major humanist centres attracting sophisticated patrons, artists, and scholars. Of the long line of renowned anti-scholastic intellectuals who were attracted to Carthusian circles, Petrarch was undoubtedly the first. By revealing the Carthusian imprint on Petrarch?s thought as well as elements of Carthusian spirituality present in his texts, this book argues that Carthusianism was an essential component of Petrarch?s Christian humanism and hermeneutics of the self. An interdisciplinary approach, involving parallel readings of Petrarchan texts, early monastic and Carthusian primary sources, together with more recent theological reflections, offers new insights into the role of Carthusianism in the intellectual debate on spirituality and the position of the individual within this order. Through Petrarch and his literary works, the Carthusian milieu ultimately shaped not only Renaissance humanism but also our understanding of the relationship between ?self?, God, and others. Ils savent reinventer une histoire de "proximite" qui descend jusqu'a l'echelon cantonal, une unite administrative et religieuse qui a traverse tous les bouleversements d'un destin "alsacien". Avec prudence, les auteurs avancent dans une realite dont la complexe richesse a decourage plus d'un de leurs devanciers. Tableaux, cartes et graphiques renforcent la solidite d'une analyse qu'un lecteur presse jugerait trop minutieuse. Ils n'ont pas la pretention de fournir une nouvelle histoire de l'Alsace pendant la revolution mais de debusquer les materiaux jusqu'a eux negliges ou ignores en vue des reevaluations contraignantes parce que ponderees. Apres Dominique Varry et Claude Muller et a cause de leur enquete de plusieurs annees de documentation et d'ecriture, les controverses rassassees autour d'une Alsace proclamee "refractaire" face a une poignee de "constitutionnels", de preference etrangers, prennent une dimension neuve. Elle s'elargit encore avec le premier volume de la collection recemment publie et consacre, par les soins d'Alfred Minke a l'Entre Meuse, Rhin et Moselle. D'un volume a l'autre, les resultats obtenus dans des approches convergentes de l'encadrement pastoral ne sont pas le fruit de pures coincidences. Language : French.

Le present ouvrage est issu de la decouverte, en 1993, d'un important fonds d'archives privees, au monastere Sainte-Anne de Bonlieu, dans la Drome (France). Tout entier centre sur la personne de Marie Odiot de la Paillonne, premiere superieure de ce couvent de religieuses premontrees (ou norbertines) en 1871, ce fonds contient un imposant recit de fondation, d'abondants ecrits spirituels et une volumineuse correspondance (souvent conservee dans le double sens) entretenue avec des personnalites religieuses considerables du temps. L'exploitation systematique de ces milliers de pages oubliees a permis de faire resurgir l'attachante figure de cette aristocrate provencale, passionnee par la cause de Dieu dans une France republicaine peu favorable aux mystiques, et fondatrice d'un monastere de contemplatives dans une Eglise ou le clericalisme masculin s'effarouche de la liberte interieure d'une femme decidement superieure. Le parcours de cette religieuse atypique, qui reve d'observances medievales pour une communaute qu'elle fait entrer dans le XXeme siecle, se termine en 1905 en Belgique, ou elle a du mener ses soeurs en exil. La vie et la correspondance de Marie Odiot de la Paillonne, jettent egalement un jour eclairant sur la physionomie de l'ordre de Premontre au XIXeme siecle, a une epoque ou cet Ordre ancien, ruine par la Revolution, cherche en Europe les voies de sa restauration et d'une unite a refaire. Les derniers chapitres de l'ouvrage sont consacres a la place (essentielle) de l'ecriture dans la vie de Marie Odiot: lieu de combat, espace de liberte pour un langage feminin, tentative impossible de dire l'ame. Dans cette passionnante enquete sur un materiau vivant et diversifie, la quantite et la qualite des sources varient aussi : tandis que l'epoque medievale contient beaucoup d'inconnues (les ?« listes abbatiales ?» elles-memes sont peu assurees, a haute epoque), la periode moderne et contemporaine fait apparaitre des champs de recherche tout a fait inexplores : il manque encore non seulement une prosopographie generale, mais aussi une etude approfondie des cursus honorum, des modes et pratiques d'elections, des rapports souvent conflictuels entre le pouvoir central, le pouvoir local, et la ?« base ?». La complexite du pouvoir abbatial (spirituel, pastoral, economique, politique) se dessine a travers ces etudes, et cet ouvrage se veut autant un etat de la question qu'une invitation a de nouvelles recherches dans un domaine peu explore de l'histoire monastique ou canoniale. It reflects the awareness of early twelfth-century scholars of the need to teach theology in a more systematic way and thereby to bring to the attention of students the main questions to be faced in intelligent enquiry into the contents and the sources of Christian belief. However, Abelard denied writing a book of Sentences and also disowned the authorship of a book of Sentences which was judged to contain his heretical teaching at the council of Sens in 1140. In this volume are presented the versions of a book of Sentences that was written by a student or students of Abelard towards the end of his teaching career, and a reconstruction of the parts of a Liber sententiarum magistri Petri from which Abelard's critics copied excerpts. In an introduction the authorship, composition and contents of these texts is examined in detail. The edition of the Sententie is designed to show the varying versions of these and of other reports of Abelard's teaching, reports that combine written and oral sources. David Luscombe is responsible for this volume which owes much also to the generous collaboration of assistants in the University of Sheffield, namely J. Barrow, C. Burnett, K. Keats-Rohan and C. Hardback, XXXVI+180 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503045719. The Contra fatalitatis errorem of Bartholomew of Exeter was written c. 1180-82 and is one of the bishop's last works (he died in 1184). It survives in three manuscripts, though there is evidence that other copies have been lost. The work is dedicated to Bartolomew's friend and colleague Baldwin, who at the time was bishop of Worcester and was undertaken at Baldwin's suggestion. The purpose of the work is twofold: firstly, to launch a determined attack on the belief in and practice of astrology and prediction, which was clearly wide-spread in twelfth-century England; and secondly to attempt to reconcile human free-will with divine predestination. Bartholomew bases his work primarily on Basil the Great (in the Latin translation of Eusthatius), Ambrose of Milan, Boethius, Anselm of Canterbury, and, above all, Augustine, and his careful and logical discussion is the longest and most comprehensive attempt at resolving the problem of free-will and predestination to come from the twelfth century. It is a monument of pre-scholastic scholasticism, and has been too long ignored by students of medieval theology and philosophy. Languages: Latin.
