This volume presents the Lives of three women of the thirteenth century, all written by contemporaries. In the late Middle Ages, almost every town in Northern Europe had its own anchoress, who would keep in touch with the citizens through a window looking onto the churchyard or through a door and window looking into the church (as shown in the cover illustration). Such women, along with the beguines, Cistercian nuns and monks, reform-minded clergy, and devout laywomen, formed what Barbara Newman has termed 'close-knit networks of spiritual friendship that easily crossed the boundaries of gender, religious status, and even language'. This volume presents the lives of two recluses, Yvette of Huy, whose life was recorded by her spiritual friend, the Premonstratensian Hugh of Floreffe, and Margaret the Lame of Magdeburg, whose lessons were recorded by her confessor, the Dominican John of Magdeburg (introduced and translated by Jo Ann McNamara, and Gertrud Jaron Lewis and Tilman Lewis respectively). The anchoress Eve of Saint-Martin was an author herself. Her memoir in French on her friend Juliana's and her own labour for the new Feast of Corpus Christi forms the basis of the Latin Life of Juliana of Cornillon (introduced and translated by Barbara Newman). This study is focused on BL MS Harley 494, a small manuscript book which can be dated between 1532 and 1535 and which has many of the features of a preces privatae volume, or private prayer book. It contains prayers in English and Latin but also a number of brief devotional treatises in English. MS Harley 494 possesses two more features of interest: it belonged to a Hampshire widow, Anne Bulkeley (and possibly later to her daughter Anne, a nun at Amesbury Priory); and it emerged from a Birgittine textual community. Barratt edits and annotates the complete manuscript to provide an accessible and informative edition of this little known manuscript. However, Anne Bulkeley and her Book is not a conventional edition of a late Middle English text. Rather, Barratt carefully contextualizes the manuscript within its historical background just before the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and meticulously investigates the varied, and often unusual, sources of many of the individual items in the book. In addition, the discussion encompasses several related manuscripts (principally Lambeth Palace MS 3600 and the so-called Burnet Psalter (Aberdeen University Library MS 25)). The Knowing of Women's Kind in Childing is a short fifteenth-century prose treatise which claims to be translated from Latin texts (or Latin and French, according to some manuscripts) that derive ultimately from the Greek. It has a unique importance as it was written by a woman, for a female audience, and on the subject of women. The text considers women's physical constitution, what makes them different from men (primarily the possession of a womb) and, in particular, the three types of problem that the womb causes. That it was written for a female audience is made explicit in the Prologue where the writer explains that he has translated this text out of French and Latin into English because literate women are more likely to read English than any other language and can then pass on the information it contains to illiterate women. More controversial must be the claim that this text was written by a woman. The text is a translation, no doubt by a man, but one of his ultimate sources was a text attributed to 'Trotula', in the Middle Ages believed to be the name of a midwife or gynaecologist from Salerno, who wrote extensively on women's ailments, childbirth and beauty care. Recent work shows that such a woman, probably named Trota, did exist and that she did write a gynaecological treatise, the Trotula or 'little Trota', which became closely associated with two other texts not by her. All three however became very popular and were widely disseminated under her name. Large sections of The Knowing of Woman's Kind come, via an Old French translation, from a version of the Liber de Sinthomatibus Mulierum (the Cum auctor), the first element in this Trotula ensemble. The first product of nature is the intellect, which is called the great one, and which clearly is originally a cosmic function, derived from nature but lighted up by spirit. The natural source of this conception must be found in the idea in the Upanisads that the supreme spirit re- appears as the firstborn of creation after it has produced the primitive matter. The ultimate origin of the idea can be traced beyond the Upanisads to the Rgveda.A much more developed account of Samkhya type is to be found in the Svetasvatara Upanisad, which is no doubt older than the Prasna, but later than the Katha. The Upanisad is definitely deistic, Rudra who bears the epithet but not the name, Siva, being the object of devotion and belief, but at the same time being regarded as the absolute and supreme spirit, rather than as derived from that spirit. On the other hand, the Upanisad contains a series of numbers which are best to be explained as referring to enumerations accepted by the Samkhya school: thus in i, 4, the individual self is compared to a wheel with three tyres, sixteen ends, fifty spokes, twenty counter-spokes and six sets of eight. About The Author : Prof Arthur Berriedale Keith DCL DLit LLD( 1879 – 1944) was a Scottish constitutional lawyer, scholar of Sanskrit and Indologist. He became Regius Professor of Sanskrit and Lecturer in Constitutional History in the University of Edinburgh. He served in this role from 1914 to 1944. He is buried in Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh with his wife, Margaret Balfour Allan (died 1934). La lettura, il commento e l'esegesi dei testi che documentano tali discussioni consentono l'accesso piu efficace e sostanziale all'evoluzione della teologia carolingia, che trovo proprio nel confronto con tesi ritenute eterodosse la spinta a chiarire i temi piu delicati della dottrina cristiana. Da Beato di Libana, Alcuino e Rabano Mauro, fino a Ratramno di Corbie e Giovanni Scoto Eriugena, gli intellettuali carolingi si impegnarono nel comporre opere tendenzialmente ispirate dalla volonta di confutare argomentazioni estranee all'ortodossia e di specificare dottrine non ancora stabilmente definite. Il patrimonio patristico, la lettura assidua e consapevole delle Scritture e lo studio delle artes profane, tutti elementi che si ponevano alla base della loro formazione sapienziale, vennero cosi rielaborati in una comune identita teologica: in essa prese forma e concretezza la stessa ossatura culturale della nuova entita civile che con gli strumenti della politica, dell'azione militare e del controllo economico si andava creando e consolidando nell'Occidente latino in quegli stessi anni. Le fasi piu intense del complesso quadro di dibattiti ricostruito nel presente volume evidenziano il duplice ruolo rivestito in eta carolingia dalla discussione su temi teologici: funzionale a contenere e delimitare deviazioni dalla ortodossia di autori contemporanei, e, al contempo, utile ad una progressiva definizione della dottrina e dell'identita culturale del nuovo impero barbaro-cristiano. Ce volume ouvre, dans le Corpus Christianorum, la serie des oeuvres exegetiques du franciscain Pierre de Jean Olivi (vers 1247-1298), auteur dont on a redecouvert recemment l'importance capitale. Apres avoir largement commente l'Ancien Testament et les Evangiles, Olivi abordait les epitres de Paul, avec la lettre aux Romains et la premiere lettre aux Corinthiens, dont le commentaire fut probablement interrompu par sa mort. FINE ISBN 9781905375769.‎ ‎The Paper Museum ('Museo Cartaceo') is a collection of some 10,000 drawings and prints assembled during the seventeenth century by the Roman patron and collector, Cassiano dal Pozzo, and his younger brother, Carlo Antonio. It represents one of the most significant attempts before the age of photography to embrace human knowledge in visual form, documenting ancient art and culture, architecture and topography, natural history and social customs. The 160 drawings catalogued in this volume are derived from five ancient manuscripts: the famous Vatican Vergil, the so-called 'Roman' Vergil, the Vatican Terence, and the less well-known Palatine Agrimensores, all in the Vatican Library, and from a fifth codex, now lost, known as the Chronography or Calendar of the year 354. The bulk of the drawings were copied for Cassiano between 1632 and 1634 for the purpose of studying both the characters depicted and the allied evidence of ancient costume and artefacts. By the later seventeenth century, when Pietro Santi Bartoli executed the last group of drawings in the present volume for Carlo Antonio, manuscript illustrations had come to be cherished as much for their rarity as examples of ancient painting as for their documentary value. Introductory essays provide an overview of the dal Pozzo commissions, the manuscripts and their history down to Cassiano's day, as well as their study in the wider context of classical scholarship through to the eighteenth century. All the drawings are reproduced in colour at full page, with accompanying descriptions of the subjects or relevant ancient verses in modern translation and brief commentaries. La popularite immense du Rationale est attestee, entre autres, par les nombreuses copies manuscrites (plus de deux cents manuscrits sans compter quelques abreges), par cent onze editions, dont quarante pour le seul XVe siecle (et la premiere, du 6 octobre 1459, fait de l'oeuvre de l'eveque de Mende le cinquieme document imprime), enfin par des traductions en francais, allemand, espagnol, italien et anglais. Or aucune edition scientifique de cette oeuvre magistrale n'avait encore ete tentee. Les editions successives se copiaient les unes les autres et la derniere, faite chez Dura, a Naples, en 1859, a ete tres peu diffusee et reste rare. C'est, probablement, le grand nombre de manuscrits qui ont contribue a decourager les editeurs eventuels. Aussi a-t-on opte pour une edition scientifique a partir d'un petit nombre de manuscrits choisis avec soin. Les etats successifs par lesquels est passe le texte, entre 1286 et 1296, deux redactions distinctes puis des retouches successives jusqu'a la mort de l'auteur, posaient un probleme pour l'edition, et on a voulu permettre au lecteur de distinguer visuellement les passages ajoutes ou remanies par la seconde redaction. Lorsqu'il s'agit d'une simple addition, cas le plus frequent, le paragraphe (ou l'incise) nouvellement introduit est imprime en caracteres plus petits; lorsque le texte a ete remanie, les deux redactions sont imprimees cote a cote en colonnes paralleles. Mais l'originalite et l'interet principal de cette edition reside dans les deux apparats des sources et des marginalia. Le Rationale, en effet, comme tous les predecesseurs dans le domaine des commentaires sur la liturgie, est en grande partie puise aux commentaires anterieurs que l'auteur.
