Sarah Gibbs to the Reverend Dr. Samuel F. Jarvis
Letter from an American passenger describing the arrival of an immigration ship and informing a prominent but despicable Connecticut minister that his long-suffering wife who would soon initiate one of the most notorious divorce cases of the 19th century would shortly be returning from Europe
Ship Burgundy to Middletown Connecticut 1837. Envelope or Cover. Very good. This two-page folded letter measures 16" x 10" unfolded. It bears a circular red New York "Ship" postmark dated August 16 and is in nice shape. The ship Burgundy regularly brought immigrants from Europe to the United States. On this voyage which began at Le Havre in April it transported 41 U.S. citizens and 79 immigrant farmers from Prussia and Bavaria to New York see the Immigrant Ship Transcribers Guild On-Line where Ms. Gibbs reports in her letter to Dr. Jarvis that it was quarantined for three days: "Tho' there has been no sickness on board except measles - they are obliged to cleance the ship at Staten Island and then land strange passengers and our baggage cannot be taken out until the ship comes up unless we consent to it being examined by an inferior officer." Ms. Gibbs also informs the Reverend Jarvis that "I saw Mrs J and daughter a few days before I left Paris they were all well very much occupied in preparation for their return to America It was their intention to sail the 8th of this month.". No doubt Ms. Gibbs would have no idea that this information would be something that Jarvis simply did not want to hear as Sarah was returning to the United States to begin divorce proceedings. In 1810 Samuel Jarvis then a young minister recently graduated from Yale married Sarah McCurdy Hart one of the "seven graces" the most beautiful women in New England at the time. Although Jarvis became quite wealthy as one of the most prominent pastors in New England and the couple had five children together their marriage was miserable from the start. It eventually ended in one of the most notorious divorces of 18th century America and was chronicled in newspapers and pamphlets of the day. Samuel was a serious humorless and stubborn man while Sarah was high strung tempestuous and easily angered. Soon after the wedding they began to annoy anger and infuriate each other. Samuel was also physically abusive not only to Sarah but to at least one of his daughters. During the divorce proceedings which were initiated soon after Sarah returned from her mutually agreed upon exile in Europe it came to light that Jarvis had repeatedly punched her in the head seized and wrung her nose dragged her across floors held her captive in a small apartment forced her to remain silent at all times limited her food and attempted to commit her to an insane asylum. A remarkable and scarce first-hand account of the arrival of an immigrant ship in New York made even more compelling by its connection to the infamous Jarvis-Hart divorce. At the time of listing no similar accounts of an immigrant ship's arrival in New York are for sale in the trade. There are no records at the Rare Book Hub or OCLC of similar accounts being held by institutions or sold at auction. By Reverend William Greenleaf Eliot
Loyalty and Religion. A Discourse for the Times
St. Louis: George Knapp 1861. Wraps. Very good. Complete with 12 pages including the cover. See Sabin 2217. In nice shape with some light marginal toning Elliot preached this sermon on August 18 1862 shortly after eleven Southern states had seceded and while Missouri teetered between joining the Confederacy or remaining in the Union. Although Eliot was a moderate abolitionist and Union supporter he rarely if ever publicly announced his political opinions. Rather he preached generally about freedom religion and loyalty stressing community unity and encouraging his parishioners to refrain from quarreling an instead search for things upon which they had in common. He believed that the ever-increasing extreme political polarization over slavery was unhealthy for the community prevented any possibility of reaching a peaceful solution and could only spell disaster for the nation. However in this sermon Eliot makes clear that he is a Unionist and argues that citizens have a religious and patriotic duty to their nation that are one and the same. Although distressed by secession his optimism shines through: "But the time will come when the community of interest will again be acknowledged and we shall be yet again ONE NATION . . . and this great experiment of Republican Institutions now on trial will yet succeed." Eliot's efforts along with those of Nathaniel Lyon and Francis P. Blair tipped public sentiment in favor of the Union and the Missouri Ordinance of Secession proposed by Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson a southern sympathizer was never passed by a legally assembled quorum of state legislators. See Holt's William Greenleaf Eliot: Conservative Radical for more information. William Greenleaf Eliot was born in Massachusetts. After graduating from Harvard Divinity School in 1834 he moved to St. Louis where he founded the first Unitarian church west of the Mississippi the Church of the Messiah now the First Unitarian Church of St. Louis. Eliot was active in public life and instrumental in founding many civic institutions including the St. Louis Public Schools and the St. Louis Art Museum. A strong proponent of higher education he co-founded Washington University in 1853 which was initially named Eliot Seminary in his honor and he served as its chancellor from 1870-1887. He was the grandfather of the modernist poet T. S. Eliot. An important and rather scarce piece of Missouri's Civil War history. At time of listing no other examples are for sale in the trade and no auction records are found at ABPC or the Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows that the pamphlet is only held by nine libraries.

George Knapp paperback books

Reverend Red Fox James
Three Photographs of Reverend Red Fox James One Inscribed
New York et al. 1915. Silver gelatin prints roughly 8 x 8 8 x 10 and 5 x 7 inches the last on a larger mount. Very Good. In 1914 Francis Red Fox James now presumed to be related to the Blackfoot tribe rode a horse across the country seeking states' approval for an American Indian national holiday. He delivered endorsements from 24 states to the federal government but a commemoration never materialized. The Washington Herald reported that James rode 4000 miles from a Crow reservation in Montana and was received by President Wilson to discuss the possibility of a "national Indian's Day" in October. Washington Herald 12/16/14

Although his mother was probably Blackfoot James claimed Native American heritage only as an adult. He changed his name by adding "Red" and later "Skiuhushu" to Francis Fox James. Two of the images in this collection contain familiar tropes of American Indian portraiture but the third offers an arresting image of James holding the American flag aloft as a kind of offering. This enigmatic gesture could be read as evidence of an optimistic belief in a mutual relationship between the US and American-Indian nations. It is also undoubtedly related to James' interest in legitimizing his Indian heritage as the founder of the Tepee Order a youth organization addressed mainly to white Protestant children. By 1920 the Order had evolved into an adult secret fraternal organization shrouded in mysticism. James was also associated with the Boy Scouts; he is credited with organizing the first All-Indian Boy Scout Troop in 1915.

In The Search for an American Indian Identity 1970 Hazel Hertzberg writes that James "was deeply troubled by his degree of Indian 'blood.'" In addition to changing his name several times to seem more "Indian" he theorized that his Welsh ancestry was pre-Columbian using the Tepee Order to create a kind of third space a "pan-Indian society" that was neither Indian nor white.

We find no other examples of these photographs though a US flag does appear on James' saddle in a photo documenting his White House visit. One picture signed by James with "Indian in Prayer "Great Spirit. / Red Fox James. Blackfeet." on recto and the following on verso: "A Gift / To my dear Friend / Eugene Beaton / c/o Burns Studio / Bucyrius sic Ohio. From Red Fox James / Blackfoot Tribe." Generally a very good collection with some fading to images but well preserved overall. unknown books
