The preferred second edition with the plates no longer featuring the background colour. Small tear to 'Magpie' plate in volume one not affecting text or image neatly repaired. Some sporadic spotting to edges textblock and plates some leaves unopened. Bindings lightly rubbed to joints and slightly bumped corners. 'The Hope of the Katzekopes' was written by Reverend Paget with the intention of guiding young minds towards a more wholesome morality as the author believed that this was lacking in other fiction at the time. It was intended to exercise empathy in children and to guide them away from selfishness. Written by Reverend Francis Edward Paget who was the chapplain to the bishop of Bath and Wells and who restored Elford Church. Some of his other works include 'Lucretia' 'The Pageant' 'Tales of the Village Children' and 'Some Records of the Ashtead Estate and of its Howard Possessors'. With six illustrated head pieces throughout. Condition: In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally sound. Light dampstaining to the boards causing discolouration. A couple of light markings to the boards. Minor sunning to the spine. Small amount of bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Rear hinge is strained. Prior owner's ink inscription to the front pastedown '1898'. Prior owner's tidy sketching of the Union Jack to the font pastedown. Light offsetting to the recto to the front endpaper and to the verso to the rear endpaper. Prior owner's label to the verso to the front endpaper 'John & Christie Dore 18 Whitehall Watchet Somerset TA23 0BD'. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title page 'To . . . McClitock with . . . love 5th of Dec 1914'. Internally generally firmly bound though strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd spot and handling mark. Textblock from pages 17 to 96 have been cut to the bottom to the fore edge. Puncture mark through the textblock however not affecting text. Page 1/2 is lifting but remains attached. Small chip to the head of page 35/36. Last line on page 159 'And so my story ends' has scoring marks around it with attempted removal and is lifting from the bottom. Complete with fourteen illustrations and engravings by David Graves. Printed by David Graves's publishing house 'The Swanbourne Press'. The only other known work to be printed by The Arundel Press was an edition of Twelve Madrigals. This scarce work is a beautiful example of the biblical Book of Ruth and tells of Ruth's accepting the God of the Israelites as her God and the Israelite people as her own. Condition: In the original green paper boards with a gold coloured leaf overlay. Externally very smart with just some slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine. Slight creasing to the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean with just some offsetting and the odd spot to the first and last few pages. Signed by the illustrator to the colophon.
