Newcastle: W. Thompson 1790. Leather bound. 611pp. Quarto 27.5 cm Original brown leather with a black leather gilt stamped spine label. Good. The leather covers and spine are heavily mottled scratched and rubbed. Glue repair to a tear in the front joint at the foot of the spine. The area covered by glue measures 1 inch wide by 3/4 of an inch tall. There are multiple very dark stains on the boards. The largest stain is on the rear board and is 3 inches wide by 1 and 3/4 of an inch tall. Subtle restoration work along the edges of the spine and covers and along the front joint. There are a couple of short cracks along the front joint of the spine. The corners of the covers are gently bumped. Sheets of more recent paper have been applied to the backsides of the title page and frontispiece page backing large tears and losses. There are a couple of tape repairs backing the title page and there is a 2 inch long tape repair on p. 321. The pages are age-toned and have occasional minor staining and foxing. The pages at the beginning have faint damp staining in the bottom fore edge corners. Darker stains on the frontispiece page the title page and p. 254. Paper repairs to pp. 353 367 547 549 599 609 and 611. Contemporary manuscript letter bound in between pp. 390-391. Small losses from the bottom corner of p. 421 and from the bottom edge of p. 539. Very small areas of insect nibbling in the surface of the paper of pp. 531-536. Tiny red ink stains on p. 606. The text block is cracked at the beginning however it is still very sturdy. With 3 plates plus frontispiece. W. Thompson unknown

Featuring a frontispiece to volume II of Matthew Henry and an engraved plate depicting Job and twenty-eight delightfully engraved plates to volume one. The extended title reads Wherein each Chapter is Summed up in its Contents; the Scarred Tert Inserted at Large in Distinct Paragraphs; Each Paragraph Reduced to its Proper Heads; the Sense Given; and Largely Illustrated With Practical Remarks and Observations. Forming the Most Complete Family Bible Ever Published. Originally published in six volumes at the start of the 18th Century Henry's work was hugely influential being anexhaustive verse by verse study of the Bible. After the author's death in 1714 the work was finished by thirteen other nonconformist ministers partly based upon notes taken by Henry's hearers. Henry's commentaries are primarily exegetical dealing with the scripture text as presented with his prime intention being explanation for practical and devotional purposes. Famous evangelical Protestant preachers such as George Whitefield and Charles Spurgeon used and heartily commended the work with Whitefield reading it through four times. Spurgeon stated Every minister ought to read it entirely and carefully through once at least. With Elizabeth Field's bookplate to the front pastedown of both volumes dated 1813. Two volumes of the originalthree. Condition: In original calf bindings. Externally a trifle rubbed with wear to extremities and spines both volumes have loss to the backstrip and calf is worn on all boards. All boards are detached but present. Internally both volumes binding is tender and in places held by the cords only or detached. Pages are intermittently bright with various instances offoxing and handling marks. Tide marks affecting first sixty pages of volume one with closed tears to four plates. Title page to volume one has been repaired with tape. Overall: POOR. sp;- London and New York - J. London - F. C. and J. Rivington 1805 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A set of the poetical works of Edmund Spenser widely regarded as one of the greatest English poets. Containing all his best-known poetry including The Faerie Queen April and Astrophel. Spenser's masterpiece is an extensive poem The Faerie Queene. The first three books of The Faerie Queene were published in 1590 and a second set of three books were published in 1596. This extended epic poem deals with the adventures of knights dragons ladies in distress etc. yet it is also an extended allegory about the moral life and what makes for a life of virtue. With engraved frontispiece of Spenser to Volume I. Spenser was called a Poet's Poet and was admired by William Wordsworth John Keats Lord Byron and Alfred Lord Tennyson among others. The language of his poetry is purposely archaic reminiscent of earlier works such as The Canterbury Tales of Geoffrey Chaucer and Il Canzoniere of Francesco Petrarca whom Spenser greatly admired. Spenser's Epithalamion is the most admired of its type in the English language. It was written for his wedding to his young bride Elizabeth Boyle. The poem consists of 365 long lines corresponding to the days of the year; 68 short lines representing the sum of the 52 weeks 12 months and 4 seasons of the annual cycle; and 24 stanzas corresponding to the diurnal and sidereal hours. Complete in eight volumes. Condition: Rebound in half-morocco bindings with marbled boards and original spine labels. Externally smart with some minor wear to the spines and some sunfading to the boards. Internally firmly bound. Institutional stamps torecto of front free-endpaper. Jeremy Taylor 15 August 1613 13 August 1667 was a cleric in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the Shakespeare of Divines for his poetic style of expression and was often presented as a model of prose writing. He is remembered in the Church of England's calendar of saints with a Lesser Festival on 13 August. William Cave 30 December 1637 4 August 1713 was an English divine and patristic scholar. The merits of Cave as a writer consist in the thoroughness of his research the clearness of his style and above all the admirably lucid method of his arrangement. The two works on which his reputation principally rests are the Apostolici; or The History of the Lives Acts Death and Martyrdoms of those who were contemporary with or immediately succeeded the Apostles 1677 and Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Historia Literaria 1688. Printed at the Chiswick Press. George Ratcliffe Woodward 27 December 1848 3 March 1934 was an Anglican priest who wrote mostly religious verse both original and translated from ancient authors. The best-known of these were written to fit traditional melodies mainly of the Renaissance. He sometimes harmonised these melodies himself but usually left this to his frequent collaborator composer Charles Wood. Cupid and Psyche is a legend that first appeared as a digressionary story told by an old woman in Lucius Apuleius' novel The Golden Ass written in the 2nd century AD. Apuleius likely used an earlier tale as the basis for his story modifying it to suit the thematic needs of his novel. With originalprotective paper wraps. By Joseph Berington 16 January 1743 1 December 1827 was one of the prominent British Catholic writers of his day. well known as an author with an attractive style of writing and advanced views. His State and Behaviour of English Catholics 1780 contained more than one passage of doubtful orthodoxy; his History of Abelard1784 brought into prominence the same philosophical tendencies which had before manifested at Douai; and his Reflections addressed to Rev. J. Hawkins an apostate priest 1785 and 1788 were much criticised. The most extensive of all his works was The Literary History of the Middle Ages 1811. He published many other books at different times but some of his writings remained in manuscript since their publication would likely cause offence. Including the writers 'defence of the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ against Dr. Clarke and Mr Whiston'. Written by the Reverend Edward Hawarden Edward Hawarden Harden April 1662 - April 1735 an English Roman Catholic theologian and controversialist. Hawarden was raised a recusant family maintaining domestic Chapel's in their residences in Appleton and Widnes and later became a classical tutor and a professor of philosophy. In 1707 Hawarden left Douai to take charge of the mission of Gilligate Durham and later Aldcliffe Hall near Lancaster. Brief entries in the Tyldesley Diary give an idea of his daily life until the seizure of Aldcliffe Hall in 1717 after which he moved to London probably on his appointment as controversy-writer. Dr. Hawarden received the thanks of the University of Oxford for his defence of the Blessed Trinity in the famous conference with Dr. Samuel Clarke 1719. A reprint of the1714 publication. Complete in three volumes. Condition: In a quater cloth binding with paper boards. Externally generally smart lightly rubbed in places with marks to the boards. Institutional stamps have been left to the front board of each volume. Internally firmly bound very bright and generally clean with just some light scattered scattered spotting. Ink stamps to the free-endpapers from the Monastic Library of St Augustine Abbey in Ramsgate. Pietro Sforza Pallavicino or Pallavicini 1607 Rome - June 5 1667 Rome was an Italian cardinal and historian. Having taken holy orders in 1630 and joined the Society of Jesus in 1638 he successively taught philosophy and theology in the Collegium Romanum. These texts follow the history of the Council of Trent a highly significant 16th-century Ecumenical Council of the Roman Catholic Church. It is considered to be one of the Church's most important councils. It convened in Trent then capital of the Prince-Bishopric of Trent of the Holy Roman Empire in Italy between December 13 1545 and December 4 1563 in twenty-five sessions for three periods. The council issued condemnations on what it defined as Protestant heresies and defined Church teachings in the areas of Scripture and Tradition Original Sin Justification Sacraments the Eucharist in Holy Mass and the veneration of saints. It issued numerous reform decrees. By specifying Catholic doctrine on salvation the sacraments and the Biblical canon the Council was answering Protestant disputes. The Council of Trent delayed and interrupted several times because of political or religious disagreements was a major reform council and the most impressive embodiment of the ideals of the Counter-Reformation. It would be over 300 years until the next Ecumenical Council. When announcing Vatican II Pope John XXIII stated that the precepts of the Council of Trent continue to the modern day a position that was reaffirmed by Pope Paul VI. Includes a bookplate from the monastic library of St Augustine's Abbey in Ramsgate. In Italian. Condition: In half vellum bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound with slight rubbing and marks and rubbing to the boards. A dent has been left to the board of Volume IV. The spines are generally smart with just a few marks and some institutional labels to the lowerhalf of the margin. The spine labels to Volume III and IV are slightly worn. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled boards. Externally rubbed with wear to the corners. Internally firmly bound althoughthe front blank is missing. Generally bright and clean with just occasional small spots and handling marks. The front free-endpaper has the ink signature of E. A. M. Stephens. Porto - Manoel Jos Ferreira 1865 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Asummary of the principles of Catholicism from the origins of the religion to the time of the series' publications. With reference to the social political dogmatic historical moral liturgical and philosophical influences of the Catholic religion translated from the French of Abb Gaume. Jean-Joseph Gaume 1802-1879 was a French Roman Catholic theologian and author. Gaume wrote numerous books treating of theology history and education. As a cure to what he saw as a rise in paganism after the Renaissance it was necessary to devise a new method of moulding childhood and youth; this was to consist in catechetical instruction and the exclusion of pagan authors from classical studies. In support of this method he wrote Catchisme de Persvrance ou Expos de la Religion depuis l'origine du monde jusqu' nos jours 1854 La Religion et l'Eternit 1859 andTrait de l'Esprit Saint 1864. To this series of works belong his Manuel du Confesseur 154 and l'Horloge de la Passion 1857 which he translated from St. Alphonsus Liguori. In Portugese. With vignette illustrations. Volumes I-IV and VI-X of a ten volume set only volume V absent. Condition: In tree calf bindings. Externally smart though some light rubbing in places particularly the spine label of volumes VII and IX. Front board of volume I warped. Internally firmly bound. Institutional stamps to title pages. London - Seeley and Co. 1887 Book. VERY GOOD INDEED. Hardcover. Signed by Authors. A beautifully illustrated collection of Persian stories. With sixteen illustrations many of them in full colour including a frontispiece depicting Thalaba and Oneiza. All illustrations are taken from Persian and Indian manuscripts in the British Museum. The book contains stories of Thalaba and Kehama after the epic poems of Robert Southey and stories of Rustem condensed from Firdausi's Shah-Nameh or Book of the Kings. Alfred John Church 29 January 1829 27 April 1912 was an English classical scholar. While at University College in partnership with William Jackson Brodribb he translated Tacitus and edited Pliny's Letters Epistulae. Church also wrote a number of stories in English re-telling classical tales and legends for young people of which Stories of the Magicians is an example. He also wrote much Latin and English verse and in 1908 published his Memories of Men and Books. Church died in Richmond Surrey. A presentation copy with copperplate inscription to front blank Godfrey Edmund Luton Hawkbury Prize Dec. 1916. Condition: In a morocco binding with gilt edges. George Crabbe 24 December 1754 3 February 1832 was an English poet and naturalist. The two works for which Crabbe became best known were The Village 1783 and The Borough 1810 both lengthy poems dealing with the way of life he had experienced. In 1783 he also married Sarah. In 1814 he became Rector of Trowbridge in Wiltshire where he remained. By the time of his death he was well regarded and a friend of William Wordsworth Sir Walter Scott and other major literary figures of the time. Complete in two volumes. Condition: In quarter diced bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound though rubbed. Some slight loss to paper on front board of volume II. Front joint of volume I starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of Nathaniel Preston to front pastedowns of both volumes. Ink signatures to title pages. The continuation of the History however remained unwritten. In 1908 one of the manuscripts was edited by J. H. Pollen and E. Burton and published as Biographies of English Catholics in the Eighteenth Century. It remains an essential if not always accurate source for historians of eighteenth-century English Catholicism - ODNB. Condition: The binding is generally tight and firm. There is onlyvery mild wear to the extremities with just very mild bumping and rubbing. Internally the pages are generally clean with very mild browning.
