Presentation manuscript booklet presented to Joseph Forrester on the occasion of his marriage by members of the Toc H Movement for care of injured servicemen
London 1931. Manuscript album measuring 188 x 138 mm. bound in full polished calf spine gilt with raised bands boards embossed and decorated in gilt dentelles edges gilt; silk endpapers. In 1915 a soldier's rest centre was opened at Poperinghe Belgium. It was named Talbot House in memory of Gilbert Talbot who had been killed at Hooge. The founders Gildert's elder brother and the Rev. Philip Clayton Tubby ensured soldiers regardless of rank were welcome. This is a presentation manuscript booklet presented to a cherished member of the fellowship at the time of his marriage. Accordingly the ornamental title-page is dedicated as follows: 'Joseph Forrester. To "The Skipper" on the occasion of his marriage May 1931.From many scattered friends in Toc H.' The Toc H movement took its name from an abbreviation for Talbot House and Toc signifying the letter T in the British Army signals alphabet. The association developed as an interdenominational Christian social service based on friendship service fairmindedness and the Kingdom of God. These became the "Four Points of the Toc H compass. Throughout the 1920s the movement grew not only in Great Britain but also Australia. The frontispiece shows the coat of arms of Lancaster and crests Blackpool Preston Fleetwood and Morecambe The illuminated address is to Joseph Forrester "The Skipper" on his marriage in May 1931. However from the pencil correction to the date it appears he was actually married in April. The address continues 'he has built bravely in the past: we cannot imagine but that he will build bravely in the future. From many scattered friends in Toc H." Thirteen pages of autograph signatures follow with the first two pages carrying amongst others those of Philip Clayton alias Tubby and Hugh F. Sawbridge alias Sawbones who had also been a chaplain in World War 1. Each page is bordered with the Toc H symbol of the Lamp of Maintenance as each corner. Loosely inserted are two letters to Forrester dated 13 February 1925. One on TOC H letterhead in typescript is from the Assistant General Secretary complimenting him on the formation of the Lancaster group. The other is from Barclay Barron apologising at having to cancel his visit at short notice. The life of Joseph Forrester remains opaque nonetheless the high quality of the binding and quality of the illumination reflect the high esteem of those who shared his commitment to Toc H. unknown

London: R. Royston 1676. Preliminaries thumbed old ownership manuscript to title "Cam. Tankerville 1726" a bit foxed and a few scattered stains good overall in contemporary calf scuffed and worn at extremities with some loss of the headband rear board stained. Folio with a frontispiece and double page 'Tree of Faith' plate several other cuts in the text; contemporary gilt-ruled polished crimson calf spine with gilt decorated panels between raised bands. A beautifully printed history of the early church illustrated with remarkable cuts depicting the apostles persecuted in all manner of ways including crucifixion immolation and the dreaded 'cauldron of boyling oyl'. Each apostle is awarded a separate chapter and is depicted both beatified and under duress. The author William Cave 1637-1713 was a minister and scholar of Church history who took his Doctor of Divinity at Cambridge before serving as vicar of Islington and later in London. Cave was chaplain to Charles II and Canon of Winsor. Cave's primary area of expertise was the early history of the Church and following the structure of Eusebius of Caesarea he weaves the lives of the apostles into a close narrative that illuminates arcane early theology for his readers. Cave openly credits his debt to the tradition of Eusebius and by so doing was successful making the early history of the Church accessible to a wider audience: 'what is significant about Cave's writings is that they follow the tradition of Christian bio-bibliography that in late antiquity and into the medieval period had such a long and rich history and which was revived in the Reformation. Cave's works provide valuable evidence for the interest in patristic scholarship at the end of the seventeenth century.' ODB. A rare and early pamphlet by the prolific Lang on the foundation of the Australian College printed in Sydney by Stephens & Stokes the same year that they began publishing the Herald. In his preface Lang discusses how the establishment of 'an Academical Institution for the education of Youth. on the liberal and economical principles of the Schools and Colleges in Scotland' had been a dream of his since he arrived in the colony in 1822. Lang returned to England in 1830 where he argued for the adoption of the scheme and was pleased with the positive response. As a result of his efforts the Australian College was opened in 1831 surviving until 1854: 'at its best in the late 1830s it appears to have been run very efficiently' ADB. One of the most attractive aspects of this pamphlet is the inclusion of a catalogue of "Donations for the Institution" which gives a glimpse of the resources available: these include the works of Jeremy Bentham in thirty volumes octavo donated by Bentham himself; scientific apparatus from Dr. Ure late Professor of Natural Philosophy and Chemistry in Glasgow; and Boswell's Life of Johnson "from a Young Gentleman in London". The work also contains much of interest regarding Lang's long-cherished plan of arranging for emigration to Australia in particular the details of his involvement in chartering the famous Stirling Castle voyage. Twelve duodecimo volumes with 117 engraved plates of 118 lacking single plate; preliminaries thumbed title of one volume perforated and another significantly browned one leaf of text ink-stained general foxing and offsetting; worn contemporary sheep scuffed with split hinges; fair condition overall as is often the case with juvenile literature of this period. A comprehensive natural history encyclopaedia for young people based on Pennant's system of classification. Animals are arranged according to quadrupeds fish birds and insects and each of these classifications is separately indexed. Besides the more usual natural history descriptions of animals vegetables and minerals this work is the first to describe for children Australia's most famous marsupial - the kangaroo. The entry under the Jerboa vol. III p. 172 reads 'Mr. Banks brought home the skin of an animal which he calls the kanguroo sic which from its general outline and the most striking peculiarity of its figure greatly remembers the jerboa yet it entirely differs in size and in many of those minute distinctions which point out the general ranks of nature. The kanguroo is often known to weigh above fifty pounds'. The kangaroo was first seen by both Banks and Cook on 24 June 1770 and the first description of it appeared in Hawkesworth's Account of the Voyages published in 1773: 'I should have taken it for a wild dog if instead of running it had not leapt like a hare or a deer. Mr. Banks also had an imperfect view of this animal and was of opinion that its species was hitherto unknown.'. During the remainder of the exploration of the east coast of Australia Cook records that both he and Banks shot and ate kangaroo on several occasions. He records two in particular that weighed eighty pounds and fifty-four pounds the skins of which Joseph Banks took back to England with him. Illustrations of over four hundred animals finely engraved in copper complete this charming eighteenth-century work intended solely to be used by children. F. Newberry unknown
