Pointed essay of the injustice of the opium trade by Algernon Thelwall son of the English orator and political reformer John Thelwall. A minister of the Church of England Algernon Thelwall beleived in expanding the role of the church in social reform within Britain and abroad. An outspoken critic of British policy in China his book was published at a critical period after Commissioner Lin had ordered the destruction of opium stockpiled in the British factories at Canton and imprisoned the British Commissioner Captain Elliot for violation of Chinese law. This scarce Liverpool Daily Post Printers first edition is in fair to good condition. Bound in green boards with red titles and Red Rose of Lancashire motif it has some foxing to page edges. Dublin: Chamberlaine and Rice P. Wogan and others 1790. A handsome set. Two volumes with both half-titles; contemporary mottled calf flat spines gilt and with double red and green morocco labels. A fine and attractively bound set of voyages collected and edited for the enlightenment of younger readers. Pacific voyagers including Dampier Anson Wallis and Carteret feature heavily in the narratives while no fewer than four chapters are devoted to the discoveries of Captain Cook. Significantly one chapter includes a plea for a public monument to Cook's memory including a rhyming epitaph of ten lines proposed by the editor Reverend John Adams who humbly prefaces his composition with this disclaimer 'the following epitaph is laid before the public in hopes that a perusal of it may incite some gentleman of superior genius to produce something better on the subject and more worthy of that celebrated character.'. Of particular note given the 1790 date of publication Adams' work also includes thirteen short entries on the newly established penal colony at Botany Bay. These short and enticing articles are edited and simplified from the official account of Governor Arthur Phillip published in London the previous year; they include descriptions of the Aborigines of Port Jackson early attempts at agriculture and the soil and climate of the colony. Interestingly the journal narratives of Lieutenant Watts of the convict transport Lady Penrhyn and of Captain Marshall of the Scarborough are included in simplified form. The natural history of New South Wales features in two entries one on a peculiar shark and another on a dingo sent as a gift from Governor Phillip to Mr. Nepean in England and now in the possession of the Marchioness of Salisbury at Hatfield House. The handsome features and ferocity of the dingo are admired though it is noted that 'it is scarcely to be expected that this elegant animal will ever become familiar.' First published in London in 1790 by Kearsley this Dublin imprint is of some rarity: Beddie was able to locate only one copy in the State Library of Victoria; Forbes located just three other copies including one in the Mitchell Library. London: Religious Tract Society 1885. An excellent copy. Octavo frontispiece and engraved plates charming vignettes; in original gilt decorated green cloth. An unusually bright and fine copy. William Wyatt Gill 1828-1896 was an energetic English missionary active in the Pacific and New Guinea author of numerous works containing valuable ethnographic descriptions of the Cook Islands and Rarotonga. Despite the author's obvious evangelical bias Gill was an acute and intelligent observer of the indigenous cultures he encountered and possessed a remarkable linguistic capacity that allowed him to significantly revise the native language of Rarotonga. Jottings from the Pacific draws principally from Gill's period of missionary work in the Cook Islands and Tuvalu and offers a compelling account of the assimilation of the gospel into Polynesian culture and day-to-day life. Published shortly after the demise of transportation to New South Wales and Van Diemen's Land when only a trickle of convicts continued to be sent to Western Australia the Reverend Shipley's account describes new systems for the discipline and moral reformation of prisoners in Britain in the wake of transportation. Shipley primarily describes the working of the new system in Ireland although one chapter concerns the results of the so called 'Intermediate System' in England. Separate chapters detail the former condition of Irish prisons and steps taken to improve them and detailed reports on the 'Intermediate Establishments' newly formed to handle the large numbers of prisoners left in Ireland as a result of the close of transportation after all a disproportionately high number of convicts sent to Australia originated from Ireland during the harsh famine years. Of some interest to the history of criminology an appendix of 15 pages describes the scale of 'marks' or incentives provided to prisoners for good behaviour and moral improvement. This copy is inscribed 'Lady Valsamachi with the author's love Cudderdon Oxon Nov. 10 1857'. Lady Valsamachi was the widow of Bishop Herder who remarried an Ionian Greek nobleman in 1848. Generously illustrated cyclopaedia of curious knowledge gleaned from myriad sources for the general reader. In the preface the good Reverend Polehampton laments the fate of the modern polymath overwhelmed with new discoveries from the disciplines of history and science. His intention is to produce a synthesis whose 'direct scope is to furnish a Literary Conservatory of Rare Curious and Interesting Productions derived from all quarters and from all ages of the world: from every branch of science so far as it can be rendered popular and from every department of research and discovery; from the most approved works of Travels and Antiquities of Topography or general Geography; of Fossils and Mineralogy; of Natural History and Physiology; and of Chemistry and Mathematics.' One particular plate of interest depicts a Pacific scene and is captioned "The Bread Fruit Tree R. N. Rose unknown

Sydney: Stephens and Stokes 1831. A little spotted but a very good copy bindings mildly rubbed. Octavo 27 pages old original marbled wrappers bound in; recent half morocco with crimson spine label bookplate. A rare and early pamphlet by the prolific Lang on the foundation of the Australian College printed in Sydney by Stephens & Stokes the same year that they began publishing the Herald. In his preface Lang discusses how the establishment of 'an Academical Institution for the education of Youth. on the liberal and economical principles of the Schools and Colleges in Scotland' had been a dream of his since he arrived in the colony in 1822. Lang returned to England in 1830 where he argued for the adoption of the scheme and was pleased with the positive response. As a result of his efforts the Australian College was opened in 1831 surviving until 1854: 'at its best in the late 1830s it appears to have been run very efficiently' ADB. One of the most attractive aspects of this pamphlet is the inclusion of a catalogue of "Donations for the Institution" which gives a glimpse of the resources available: these include the works of Jeremy Bentham in thirty volumes octavo donated by Bentham himself; scientific apparatus from Dr. Ure late Professor of Natural Philosophy and Chemistry in Glasgow; and Boswell's Life of Johnson "from a Young Gentleman in London". The work also contains much of interest regarding Lang's long-cherished plan of arranging for emigration to Australia in particular the details of his involvement in chartering the famous Stirling Castle voyage. Ferguson knew at least one other copy in marbled wrappers so it is likely that the old paper wrappers bound in here are indeed original. Stephens and Stokes unknown
