London: Royal Geographical Society 1933. 20 pages including a full-page sketch map. Plus photographic plates. Original condition with blue wrappers titles to front and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue seldom found in such good and original condition. Reverend Walton was a missionary also known as the 'Father of Mountaineering' in Japan. This is his riveting first-hand account of uncharted Japanese mountains and the savage head-hunting tribes of Formosa. Walton's entertaining narrative offers descriptions of attempts at some of the island's peaks - Mount Tsugitaka his first objective - interspersed with depictions of the local population: marriage customs and burial practices of the Taiyals including their virtually ceased head hunting customs. Walton worked closely with the Japanese officials on the island and a large part of his time was spent in regions which hitherto hadn't been visited by foreigners. The Japanese had opened schools and shops persuaded many of the 'savages' to settle practice agriculture and give up their nomadic way of life attempting an 'ethical' conversion of Formosa's people. Features Daihasenzan Nankotai the Takkiri Gorge and suspension bridge the arduous ascent of Mount Hapanorau; Pyanansha near the east coast of Formosa; the famous East Coast Cliffs and more. This account pre-dates the author's book "Scrambles in Japan and Formosa" first published in 1934. . First Edition. Royal Geographical Society unknown
