Containing the Peabody Institute bookplate on the inside front cover which also states Presented by George Peabody. George Peabody 1795-1869 is considered one of the first modern philanthropists establishing trusts to help the poor as well as founding the Peabody Institute. He gained much of his fortune from banking eventually partnering with Junius Spencer Morgan father of J.P. Morgan. Edited and published by Ralph Griffiths the Monthly Review published works of criticism on many authors and books providing bibliographic and historical information on many topics. This volume is part two of the index to that review starting with volume 71 and ending with volume 81. Entries include size and price of all the publications reviewed as well as references to the reviews and an index to remarkable passages. In GOOD condition. Covered in blue paper which has library shelving info on the spine. The paper bears some soiling fading and scuffing. Covers reinforced along the interior hinges with cloth tape. Oblong format. 360 pp. A songster song book/hymnal containing both religious and secular songs including many short ones on various cities towns and states around the United States. Many by composers such as Billings Holden Edson Holyoke Kimball Morgan Wood Swan and others. Selected and edited by Daniel H. Mansfield a reverend from Maine this work 'combined elements of the elite and popular music cultures of his day' drawing from the 'legacy of Puritan New England' as well as work from Boston's European movement Religions of the United States in Practice Vol. 1 p 96. Also of note many of the pieces in the second and third section of the work were related to millennial themes reflecting the influence and importance of the Millerite movement ibid p. 96. FAIR condition. Heavy darkening to the paper with moderate soiling and staining. Covers creased very scuffed and worn looking with the paper peeled off in several 1 to 2 inch sections especially along the extremities. Extremities bumped and worn. Interior solid with moderate to heavy scattered foxing some staining and soiling throughout including a faint dampstain at the lower corner of the first several pages. Andrew's stance on the prohibition of alcohol seeking to refute his claims of alcohol as a food and citing moral perils of drink. John A. Andrew was the governor of Massachusetts from 1861 to 1866 and argued against Massachusetts' prohibition of alcohol due to its legislation of morals and private acts of individuals. GOOD condition. Disbound pamphlet. 24pp. A speech in favor of prohibition of the sale of alcohol using religious and biblical allegories but also citing anti-alcohol laws and their effects in states such as Maine New Hampshire and New York. The last 2 1/2 pages of the pamphlet cites various figures demonstrating a reduction in crime and those jailed coinciding with the enactment of anti-alcohol legislation in Maine Vermont Rhode Island Indiana and New York among others. In GOOD condition with moderate foxing to the first and last page. Two faint vertical fold creases present to the pamphlet. Small area of residue/soiling to the lower front cover at the fore edge resulting in a small area of staining present in that locale to the first half of the book.
