Entirely devoted to the regeneration of English Catholicism, his "Speeches ..." were harnessed with contemporary science in order to reconcile the most eminent spirits of its country with orthodox theology. Pronounced during the Lent of 1835 the «Conferences on the relationship between science and the revealed religion» were published in 1836 in English in London. They touch linguistics, the ethnography but also geology and are the alive illustration of an scientifico-apologetic paradigm in the social sciences of first half of 19th century. L'originale anglaise (Twelve Lectures on the connexion between science and revealed religion, delivered in Rome) était parue à Londres en 1836.L'ouvrage se rattache à l'immense effort apologétique entrepris pour "concilier" les nouvelles découvertes sur les premiers temps de l'humanité tant avec les linéaments essentiels des récits bibliques que des doctrines considérées comme définitives par le magistère. De fait, les conférences reproduites dans l'ouvrage tournent-elles toutes autour des origines (étude comparative des langues ; débuts de l'humanité ; histoire primitive ; études orientales).
