First published in this edition in 1926 this is the third printing. This is a volume from the Calvert Series under the general editorship of Hilaire Belloc who incidentally has written a five page "Editor's Note" for this volume. The text block is trimmed on the head edge and left rough cut on the fore and tail edges as issued. Minor shelf wear to the externals corners and spine tips the gilt spine lettering is a tad dulled and the end papers are browned on the edges or margins. Otherwise 'tis clean with a tight binding. A history of the Tractarian Movement also known as the Oxford Movement led by a group of Anglican clerics at Oxford whereby they left the Anglican Communion and joined the Roman Catholic Church many of them becoming members of the Oratory of St. Philip Neri due in large part to the leadership role of John Henry Newman. Browne himself was a former Anglican curate of Bawdsey in Suffolk. The large appendix contains lists of clerical converts with dates and preferments lists of lay converts of note and many extracts from correspondence articles of the day and government pronouncements. A list of subscribers to the first edition are published at the back. Moderate wear to the corners and spine crown/heel with bumps and wear and the cloth on the spine is showing some surface tearing at the joint. The text block edges are darkened with some foxing while the there is some scattered and mild foxing present on the pages though not obtrusive. Previous owner's gift inscription in quite a florid hand on the front free end paper. . James Duffy. hardcover

New York.: Charles Wildermann. Very Good. 1899. Hardcover. 8vo - 20 x 12.5 cm.; xxiv - 688 pp. Textured dark brown leather over thin and flexible boards with gilt lettering on the spine. Blue linen on the end papers. All text block edges are gilt as issued. The title continued: "To Which Are Added the Lives of Many Saints a Complete Prayer-Book and a Description of the Holy Land With Over 100 Illustrations." This is the second edition of this translation. Originally published in German in 1690 this book has been translated into many languages over the years. This particular volume has some family information written over the three "fill-in" pages. Names mentioned are John Aloysius Zinger Louis Agnes Motz their parents and their children and a full-page description of J. A. Zinger's death in 1903 "he suffered patiently and full of confidence in God". Tipped in note from a former owner a school sister of Notre Dame on the recto of the second blank preliminary. The fore edge margins of the pages up to page xxiv have small chips and closed tears as these pages are a tad brittle on that margin. The remainder of the text pages have minor age toning to the external margins and are still quite supple. The externals show mild wear and light rubbing to the corners and spine tips with all the gilt still being quite bright. The front end paper hinge has the beginning of a tear in the gutter on the vero of the free end paper and the back end papers have been professionally repaired in the same place with a linen strip. A clear and removable archival cover has been fitted. A handsome copy of one of the scarcer editions of Goffine's work. . Charles Wildermann. hardcover

The author interviewed six members of this class Michael Ahlstrom Larry Duris Bob Heidenreich Tom Libera Ed Upton and Bill Zavaski personally. In the ordination class there were originally 35 men; after several deaths and occupational shifts there remain nineteen who are still officially listed as active.
