‎Arndt, Johann.‎

‎Im Nahmen JESU! DER KERN ODER KURTZER BEGRIFF DERER HERRL. UND GEISTREICHEN BUCHER VOM WAHREN CHRISTENTHUM / Des furtrefflichen Theologi, Herrn Johann Arndts. also kurtzlich verfasset von einem Jesum liebenden Freund.‎

‎pp. 479 + Remarkable engraved frontis, with a portrait of the author held aloft by three angels. Title page printed in red and black. Text in German fraktur type. Small 8vo. 180 mm. Attractive early full leather binding, elaborately tooled in blind. Spine worn; joints cracked. no clasps. Early manuscript ownerships and sentiments, penned by Steffan Bu(e)ng in 1756. Very scarce. OCLC shows only one holding of this edition in libraries world wide. Johann Arndt [1555-1621] was a German Lutheran theologian. His books were widly influential in the 17th and 18th century. Arndt was always held in very high repute by the German Pietists (in Europe and America). The founder of Pietism, Philipp Jakob Spener, repeatedly called attention to him and his writings, and even went so far as to compare him with Plato. Attractive example of a rare proto-Pietist work. ‎Tuberinus, Johannes (Johannes Beuschel).‎

‎AD GEORGIUM INCLYTUM SAXONIAE DUCEM. JOANNIS TUBERINI. MUSITHIAS DE CAELITIBUS & sacris Historiis in Musas novem digesta: adiecto Argumentorum appendice in aliquot Christi oracula, et Evangelia quae sacris aedibus tempestate diversa lectitantur.‎

‎ff. 360 (of 361) leaves. Lacks folio Fii (but with xerox facsimiles inserted). First signature detached, and somewhat browned. The title is printed in red and black, and has a central woodcut depicting Mount Parnassus, with the Muses, Bacchus and the temples of Delphi and Apollo. On the verso of the title page are the large woodcut arms of George, Duke of Saxony, showing a powerful knight in frontal view. This woodcut is dated 1514 in the banderole at the knight's head. The blank bottom 2.5" of the title have an old repair. Printed with wide margins in the text, and throughout there are marginal and interlinear Latin notes and comments in black ink by at least two sixteenth-century hands. (The manuscript notes here might reward better scholars than we are with interesting revelations). Folio. 330 mm. Highly decorated and tooled half alum tawed vellumized pig skin over oak boards binding. The spine covering is gone, revealing four double cord raised bands, and remains of an early manuscript used as binder's super. Clasps perished but the brass receivers on the front board are present. Johannes Beuschel was a German neo-latin poet and teacher at the Leipzig university. Probably born at Rothenburg ob der Tauber in the 1470's. From 1504 (and many years thereafter) he was a reader/professor of neo-Latin poetry. He probably died in Leipzig in 1522. Other names associated with him are: Erythropolitanus - Rotenburgensis; Johannes Tuberinus; Johannes Beusselius; Johannes Peussel or Pewschel; etc. He should not be confused with the anti-Jewish writer Johannes Matthias Tiberinus [ca. 1420-1500]. This is apparently an issue of one of the so-called lecture printings (Vortrag-Drucke). Used especially in Leipzig and Erfurt, they were issued in very small quantities for use in the university. Their wide margins were provided for just the sort of annotation seen in this example. They were apparently meant mainly for local sale. As a genre they are rather rare. Of this work we can locate no examples in the U.S. and only a few in Europe. Dedicated to George (the Bearded), Duke of Saxony (1471-1539), who became Duke of Saxony in 1500. He developed decided ability as a ruler. Among other actions, he took measures to suppress the robber-knights, and regulated the judicial system by defining and adjusting the jurisdiction of the various law courts. His court was better regulated than that of any other German prince, and he bestowed a paternal care on the University of Leipzig, where a number of reforms were introduced, and Humanism, as opposed to Scholasticism, was encouraged. The most significant era of his life unfolded after the time of this book, during Luther's Reformation. Most of his political measures, stood the test of experience, but in ecclesiastico-political matters he witnessed with sorrow the gradual decline of Catholicism and the spread of Lutheranism within his dominions, in spite of his earnest efforts and forcible prohibition of the new Protestant doctrine. ‎Ellis, John (1599?-1665); Church of England; Articles of Religion.‎

‎A DEFENCE OF THE THIRTY NINE ARTICLES OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. Written in Latin by J. Ellis, S.T.D. Now done into English. To which are added the Lambeth Articles: Together with the Judgment of Bishop Andrews, Dr. Overall, and other Eminent and Learned Men upon Them.‎

‎pp. [6], 177, [1] (Publisher's advertisements). Small 12mo. 160 mm. Early ink manuscript ownership on title page: Bell. Pencil manuscript commentary on the text on the endpapers. Original full leather binding; joints cracked. The Thirty-Nine Articles of Religion were established in 1563 and are the historic defining statements of Anglican doctrine in relation to the controversies of the English Reformation; especially in the relation of Calvinist doctrine and Roman Catholic practices to the nascent Anglican doctrine of the evolving English Church. The Lambeth Articles were a series of nine doctrinal statements drawn up by Archbishop of Canterbury, John Whitgift, in 1595, in order to define Calvinist doctrine with regard to predestination and justification. This text was first published in 1694. W151‎

‎pp. [4], 150. 24 mo. 135 mm. Worn and age stained. Last leaves with very slight loss. Disbound. Elias Veiel (1635-1706) was a Lutheran theologian in Ulm, Germany. Educated at the University of Strasbourg, where he earned a master's degree, he then studied Protestant theology at the universities of Heidelberg, Leipzig; Wittenberg and Jena. In 1662, he became chaplain at the Ulm Mnster and a Professor of theology at the local high school, and later was promoted to be director of the school and the town librarian. Veiel published a number of Exegetical, historical theological and dogmatic writings mostly in Latin, but also sermon volumes and a representation of the Protestant faith, skimmed from Martin Luther's writings. Although he was a friend for over three decades with Philipp Jakob Spener - he was critical of Pietism and Anabaptism. This rare little book was apparently issued after a dispution with Veielio and Johann Philipp Cellar (Keller) (1709-1766). SCARCE. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! NW1 / SMALL Box 4‎

‎pp. (16), 165, [10] + Frontispiece portrait of Cosin, engraved by William Dolle; + Plus some early manuscript notes about this work and its author. Small 8vo. 180 mm. All edges gilt. Contemporary and entirely original full red leather gilt binding. Elaborately tooled variant cottage roof English Restoration binding. Front board detached. Spine with a piece out but preserved. John Cosin, Bishop of Durham (1594-1672) was Chaplain to Charles I and a liturgical purist. He was responsible for much of the revision of the Anglican liturgy during the Restoration. During the Interregnum, he was falsely accused of being a Romanist and exiled to France. "Cosin was a most uncompromising enemy to popery. In France he wrote his 'Historia Transubstantialis Papalis' at the request of Gilbert Talbot, who had undertaken to argue the matter out with a German prince (the Duke of Newbourg), in the presence of Charles II at Cologne, and apparently did not feel quite equal to the task. Cosin readily consented, and showed in his treatise that the Church of England held the doctrine of a real presence without in any way countenancing the doctrine of transubstantiation. It was not published until nineteen years after it was written and three years after the death of the author. It was given to the world, with an interesting preface by John Durel (1625-1683), in the original Latin." [this mostly from the DNB]. ESTC R2240; WING C6358. Original full linen cloth bindings, faded. Original paper spine labels, worn. Loss at head of spines. Slight insect damage to front joint of volume II. Hardbound. Good. Title continues: 'As Exhibited In His Parliamentary And Legal Speeches, And Miscellaneous Writings.' Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868), 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, was a British statesman who became Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Brougham helped to found the Edinburgh Review in 1802 and contributed many articles to it. He was called to the bar in 1808. In 1810 he entered the House of Commons as a Whig. Brougham took up the fight against the slave trade and opposed restrictions on trade with continental Europe. In 1820, he won popular renown as chief attorney to Queen Caroline, and in the next decade he became a liberal leader in the House. He not only proposed educational reforms in Parliament but also was one of the founders of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1825 and of University College London in 1826. As Lord Chancellor from 1830 to 1834 he effected many legal reforms to speed procedure and established the Central Criminal Court. In later years he spent much of his time in Cannes, which he established as a popular resort. S&S/AI 54668. First American Edition. PAIMP 10‎

In June 1796, twenty of Philadelphia's intellectual leaders formed the First Unitarian Society of Philadelphia, becoming the first continuously functioning church in the country to name itself 'Unitarian'. The founders were directed and encouraged by the Unitarian minister Joseph Priestley, and its first settled minister was the Rev. Dr. William Henry Furness. In the 1830s, Furness became one of the few abolitionist ministers in the city, known for his anti-slave sermons and Underground Railroad activities. His speeches were so impassioned that both he and the congregation feared reprisals from Southern sympathizers, so several members of the church quietly armed themselves and watched over the pulpit on Sundays. ‎THE EVERLASTING GOSPEL, Commanded to be Preached by Jesus Christ, Judge of the Living and Dead, Unto All Creatures, Mark XVI. 15 Concerning the eternal redemption found out by Him, whereby Devil, sin, hell and death, shall at last be abolished, and the whole creation restored to its primitive purity ; being a testimomy [sic] against the present anti-christian world.‎

A second work: 'The Fatal Consequences of the Unscriptural Doctrine of Predestination and Reprobation; with a Caution Against it.' Written in High-Dutch by M.K. and translated by Desire, was considered objectionable by many and often was not included in many copies, and it is not present here though there are no signs of it having been removed from this original binding. The 'Everlasting Gospel' written by the German pastor Georg Klein-Nicolai/Nikolai (1671-1734) of Friessdorf, was first published in 1705 under the pseudonym "Paul Siegvolck". This is the first English translation was published by Christopher Sower in Germantown in 1753. The author was associated with the radical mystical pietist Johann Wilhelm Petersen. He may have also been close to the Schwarzenau Brethren, a radical pietistic group of German Baptists also known as the Neue Taufer or the Tunkers / Dunkers. He certainly influenced their leader Alexander Mack (1679-1735). Brought by immigrants across the Atlantic the teachings of the 'Everlasting Gospel' gained influence in America - especially through the Universalist ministry of Baptist preacher Elhanan Winchester (1751-1797). The Evangelical Church or Evangelical Association, also known as the Albright Brethren, is a "body of American Christians chiefly of German descent", Arminian in doctrine and theology; in its form of church government, Methodist Episcopal. It was founded in 1800, by the Rev. Jacob Albright (1759-1808), a Pennsylvania German influenced by John Wesley and the Methodist movement. The first meetings were held in 1803, and a Book of Discipline was introduced six years later. In 1816, the church took on the name "The eganEvangelical Association". Long based in New Berlin, PA, Church headquarters remained there until 1853, when they moved west to Cleveland, Ohio in the footsteps of German-speaking immigrants to the Northwest Territory.
