The Syrian Orthodox community in the mosaic of Istanbul.= Istanbul mozaiginde Süryaniler.
New English Original binding. Full imitation leather with embossing in the shape of gate of Süryani Kadim Meryem Ana Church. 4to. (31 x 23 cm). In Turkish, English and Syriac. 311 p. B/w and color ills. The Syrian Orthodox community in the mosaic of Istanbul.= Istanbul mozaiginde Süryaniler. This work was written with the intention of being a history of the past 162 years of the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox community describing its spiritual and social leaders both clergical and laymen i.e. patriarchs, metropolitans, patriarchal delegates, chorepiscopuses, and the monks and priests, deacons, teachers and the board of directors, all who gave their worthy service and their ministry activities to be presented to you, worthy readers; and we do so with great pleasure. Around the year 1844, under the leadership of Mor Korillos (Patriarch Yakup II.), a few Syrian Orthodox families settled in Istanbul. Today there are nearly three thousand Syrian Orthodox families who have created their own niche in the mosaic which is Istanbul. Through the warm relationship that they developed amongst the local people, and in full co-operation with other citizens, they have given service worthy of the honor and glory that is Great Istanbul with their rich cultural, business and industrial activities. Today the Istanbul Syrian Orthodox Diocese holds great importance among other Syrian communities throughout the world. Istanbul had an important place in the history of the Byzantines and the Ottomans and today continues to be an important city for Turkey and the world alike. It has also attracted the interest of Syrian Fathers since the time of the second Ecumenical Council held in Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) in the year 381 AD. During the Ottoman era, however, the Syrian patriarchs came to Istanbul to receive the firman (imperial edict) from the Ottoman Sultans in dealing with the affairs of the community. The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture. Papers from the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium.
New English Paperback. 4to. (25 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xvi], 242, [2] p., color ills. The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture. Papers from the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium. The designation of Istanbul by the European Union's Council of Ministers as the European Capital of Culture for 2010 was instrumental in the decision to focus on Constantinople in the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium, which was held on 21-23 June 2010 at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The particular theme of the symposium, "The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture," was selected, on the other hand, in view of Constantinople's essential role as Byzantine imperial capital soon after its foundation by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great on 11 May 330. The aim of the symposium was to evaluate, from administrative, political, social, economic, and religious perspectives, the impact of the political power that spread out from the Great Palace and, as of the twelfth century, from the Blachernai Palace to the rest of the empire, and to investigate the reflections of this power in the cultural sphere. Presented in this volume are thirty out of the forty papers delivered at the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium. The papers have been grouped under the following four section headings: "Byzantine Palace Architecture," "The Byzantine Court as the Center of Imperial Power," "Ceremonies at the Court and in the City," and "Court Culture and Visual Arts.".

Byzantine manuscripts in Bucharest's collections.= Manuscrise bizantine în colectii bucurestene. Project coordinator: Ileana Stanculescu. From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them. Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".

"Churches in Istanbul is a book about an interesting aspect of a city of a city of many colours and many worlds: Once 'the Rome of the East', Istanbul has housed many religions, and still remains an attraction for who wish to explore the memory of a distant past. The religious sites of the Chiristian peoples who worshipped in the city gives one the opportunity to do just that. Some of these churches are still active, some are in ruins, and some have been turned into mosques - but they all carry the scent of histor within their stones, their domes and arches, their altars, their chapels. Edith Oyhon and Bente Etingu have wandered in the streets of Istanbul searching for traces of time past. This book isa journey into those worlds that they have discoverd: Stories of how some of the churches dating back to Byzantine times were built, the Protestants and others. Churches in Istanbul is a guide that will encourage the reader- wanderer to seek further in a city that hides much more!".

ABÛ MANSÛR AL-MÂTURÎDÎ, (853-944).
[Kitab al-tawheed] Kitâbü't-tevhîd. Açiklamali tercüme. Translated into Turkish by Bekir Topaloglu.
New Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). Edition in Turkish. 771 p. [Kitab al-tawheed] Kitâbü't-tevhîd. Açiklamali tercüme. Translated into Turkish by Bekir Topaloglu. Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi (d. 333/944) was a Muslim theologian who was born in Ma?urid district of the city of Samarkand which was within the borders of contemporary Uzbekistan and died in the same district. He was probably a scholar of Turkish origin. The region where al-Maturidi lived had been under the Abbasid rule at first, but later in the period of Mutawakkil Alallah came under the rule of Samanids. In that period, a fertile ground for raising competent scholars was introduced by the hands of the state. Imam al-Maturidi got his education and produced works in such a prolific environment. Al-Maturidi was a great Muslim scholar who, together with Abu al-?asan al-'Ash'ari, systemized the theological principles of Sunnite School, advocated the understanding of the Prophet and his Companions regarding fundamental Islamic issues and tried to establish them among Muslims, and fought against extreme views of Mutazilites, Shiites, and other similar sects. Due to their moderate attitudes in the relationship between reason and revelation, these two scholars, i.e. al-Maturidi and al-'Ash'ari, were attracted attention and accepted by wide range of masses. Maturidiyya School which was established after the name of Imam al-Maturidi and in line with Abu ?anifa's understanding is a theological school that has managed to gather half of the Muslim population around it. Al-Maturidi's Kitab al-Taw?id is one of the fundamental books of this school. Despite this fact, it is not possible to say that Kitab al-Taw?id is adequately known in scholarly circles especially among the adherents of Maturidiyya School.

Kitab al-tawheed. Critical ed. by Bekir Topaloglu, Muhammed Aruçi.
New Arabic Original bdg. HC. Roy. 8vo. (23 x 16 cm). In Arabic. [xLii], 582 p. [Kitab al-tawheed] Kitabu't-tevhid. Critical ed. by Bekir Topaloglu, Muhammed Aruçi. Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi who lived about a century after Abu ?anifa, and Abu Musa al-'Ash'ari who adopted Sunnite creedal principles in the last third of his life also employed a similar method. The Sunnite Theological School that has been developed around these scholars and their disciples has managed to gather more than ninety percent of the Muslim world. Even though the idea that the Sunnite Theological School was founded by al-'Ash'ari has gained wide currency, examining the works that have come to us from the earliest period of Islamic theology show us that it was Abu Man?ur al-Maturidi who carried out that task. It is an undeniable fact that al-Maturidi's Kitab al-Tawhid has been the source of the books penned after it in terms of methodology, contents and ways of inference.
