‎New English Original bdg. HC. Oblong 4to. In English. 137 p., ills. To the saints in Asia Minor: An exploration of Christian history in Turkey. Vol. 1: The Aegean region. As we guide you in the footsteps of the early saints through the olive groves, wetlands, and seasides of Western Turkey, we hope to enrich your experience of scripture and church history set in the Aegean Region. We'll begin our journey in the Christian epicenter of Ephesus where the Apostle Paul's School of Tyrannus unleashed the gospel of Jesus Christ throughout Asia. You will come face-tofave with the Aegean churches that were instructed, corrected, and encouraged by the risen Christ in the book of Revelation, authored by John. He may have known these churches quite well after serving as the bishop of ephesus. In addition to Paul and John, we meet other church fathers, many of them martyred, who led, encouraged, and critiqued the churches and Christians in the region. From world powers and church fathers to religious temples and city marketplaces, join us in encountering the saints and their surroundings in the Aegean Region of Turkey.‎

‎The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture. Papers from the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (25 x 20 cm). In English and Turkish. [xvi], 242, [2] p., color ills. The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture. Papers from the Second International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium. The designation of Istanbul by the European Union's Council of Ministers as the European Capital of Culture for 2010 was instrumental in the decision to focus on Constantinople in the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium, which was held on 21-23 June 2010 at the Istanbul Archaeological Museum. The particular theme of the symposium, "The Byzantine Court: Source of Power and Culture," was selected, on the other hand, in view of Constantinople's essential role as Byzantine imperial capital soon after its foundation by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great on 11 May 330. The aim of the symposium was to evaluate, from administrative, political, social, economic, and religious perspectives, the impact of the political power that spread out from the Great Palace and, as of the twelfth century, from the Blachernai Palace to the rest of the empire, and to investigate the reflections of this power in the cultural sphere. Presented in this volume are thirty out of the forty papers delivered at the Second International Sevgi Gonul Byzantine Studies Symposium. The papers have been grouped under the following four section headings: "Byzantine Palace Architecture," "The Byzantine Court as the Center of Imperial Power," "Ceremonies at the Court and in the City," and "Court Culture and Visual Arts.".‎

‎P. H. NYSTEN and CEMIYET-I TIBBIYE-I SAHANE-YI OSMANIYE].‎

‎Dictionnaire des sciences medicales. Français - Turc.= Lugât-i tibbiye.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original 1/3 leather bdg. lettered gilt on the spine. Decorated with period ornaments on the spine. The title is on the second compartment. Contemporary handwritten scripts on frontispiece with a period postal stamp. Ex-library stamp on the first blank and the last page. Otherwise a good copy. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. 3, [2], 640 p. Medical terms in French; preliminaries and definitions in Turkish (Arabic script). The orientation to the West in the Ottoman period started with the translation of the works of European physicians and the writing of compilation medical books from the second half of the 17th century. During this period, an important issue with regard to Turkish translation and copyrights was the lack of common terminology. In order to eliminate this deficiency, it has been deemed necessary to make a study that will ensure the use of the same terms for the same concepts in medical translations and copyrights. It was deemed appropriate to prepare a medical dictionary for this purpose and to follow the procedure of finding Ottoman equivalents to the article titles in Nysten's French medical dictionary for this dictionary. As a result of this study, during the preparation phase of the "Lügat-i Tibbiye", which was completed and published in 1290 (1874), the members of the Society of Tibbiye-i Osmaniye, in order to give the equivalents of the French medical terms, first of all, they applied to the works known as Avicenna's "The Medicine" ["Kanun fi't-tib"], Ebu'l-Kaim Zehravi's "Tasrif", Ebu Bekr er-Razi's "Havi" and other important sourcebooks of Islamic medicine. In addition, in recent times, books translated into eastern languages from western languages were also reviewed, especially the works of Sanizade [i.e. Anatomy of Sanizade] were used as well as Vankulu, Ahteri, Bûrhan-i Kâti, Lehçe, Kâmûs Tercümesi by Asim Efendi, Bianchi, Hançeri, Kazimirski, Meninsky's dictionaries. While creating new terms, Arabic and Persian were preferred to Latin and Greek, as they were more suitable for the Ottoman accent. ‎M[USTAFA] SABRI SÖZERI.‎

‎Senferâ ve Lâmiyyetu'l-'Arab (Yazma bir nüshanin fotokopisi ile). [i.e. Al-Shanfarâ and Lamiyyat al-Arab with facsimile plates of a manuscript].‎

‎Very Good Turkish Paperback. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Turkish with facsimile plates of an Arabic manuscript. 10 p. text, [26] pages in [13] plates of original Arabic manuscript from the Ayasofya Kütüphanesi [i.e. St. Sophia Library of Istanbul] preserved in 2926 / 18-31, dated 829 AH. [1412-1413 AD]. Al-Shanfarâ (?-525 CE) was a semi-legendary pre-Islamic poet tentatively associated with ?âif, and the supposed author of the celebrated poem Lâmiyyât al-Arab. He enjoys a status as a figure of an archetypal outlaw antihero (su'luk), critiquing the hypocrisies of his society from his position as an outsider. Al-Shanfarâ is most famous for, supposedly, composing the Lamiyyat al-'Arab, or "L-poem" of the Arabs. Although its attribution has been disputed ever since medieval times, the memorable first-person figure of the misanthropic brigand celebrating his position on the edge of society that the poem draws has strongly influenced views of al-Shanfarâ. We can if nothing else say that if the Lâmiyyât is a later composition, it positions al-Shanfarâ as the archetypal outlaw of a pre-Islamic heroic age, viewed nostalgically from a later era. ‎Sahifa Hammam-i bin Munabbih (15-101 H.): One of the earliest collections of the traditions of the prophet. Arabic text with Urdu translation and explanatory introduction. [SIGNED COPY].‎

‎Good Arabic Modern cloth with original covers saved inside. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). In Arabic with Urdu translations; English title on cover. 144 p. Marginal notes on pages, underlining sentences. A good copy. Signed and inscribed by Hamidullah in Ottoman Turkish, to Kemaleddin Kuscu, in Istanbul. A comprehensive biography of Sahifah Hammam ibn Munabbih, (15-101 AH). Munabbih is sometimes quoted as one of the earliest surviving hadith collections compiled by Islamic Scholar Hammam ibn Munabbih. Generally considered to be the oldest surviving book of hadith, it is found in various Oriental manuscript libraries and a printed version is widely available. It was composed by 8th century scholar Hammam ibn Munabbih. It has been translated, in the 20th century, by Muhammad Hamidullah. Two copies of Sahifa Hammam bin Munabbih manuscript were discovered; one in a Damascus library and the other in a library in Berlin. Dr. Hamidullah published it after carefully comparing the two manuscripts. Hammam bin Munabbih (b. 19h) was a disciple of Abu Hurairah. It was generally known that the Sahifah had been completely included in the Musnad Ahmad. (Wikipedia).‎

‎RAHMETALLAH KAIRANÂWÎ HINDÎ, (1818-1891).‎

‎[HINDÎ VS PFAENDER] Tercüme-i izhârü'l-hak + Ibrâzü'l-hak. 3 volumes set.‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original brown half morocco, raised bands to spine, gilt lettering. three volumes set: (2 volumes in one: [2], 641 p.; third volume: [8], 379 p.). Foxing and stains on pages, overall a very good copy set. Extremely rare first Turkish edition translated by Nüzhet Muhammad (translator of Ministry of Education) of this first Muslim source to use Western scholarly works in order to ascertain the errors and contradictions of the Bible, in response to the allegations made by certain Christian missionaries against Islam and especially to counter Mizân al-Haqq [i.e. The balance of truth], a book written by Basel Mission missionary in Central Asia and Trans-Caucasus Karl Gottlieb Pfander (1803-1865) against Islam. Izhar al-Haqq aims to respond to Christian criticism of Islam. The doctrine of the Trinity is purportedly contested using biblical, Christian, and other sources. The book was originally written in Arabic in 1864, this six-volume book was later translated (or summarized) into English, Turkish, Urdu, and Bengali. This set is printed in the Vilâyât Printing House of Bosnia-Herzegovina. "'The Demonstration of the Truth' served as a summary of all possible charges against Christianity and was therefore used after al-Kairânawî's death as a sort of encyclopedia since al-Kairânawî extended the material of former polemicists like 'Ali Tabarî, Ibn Hazm or Ibn Taymiyya to a great extent". (Schirrmacher). Rahmatullah Kairanawi Al-Hindi, (1818-1891), was a Sunni Muslim scholar who is a descendant of the third Caliph, Uthman ibn Affan, his full lineage is mentioned in family sources. Sheikh Hakeem Abdul Kareem who was the 8th great-grandfather of Rahmatullah was Emperor Akbar's physician. Kairanwi began receiving traditional Islamic education at the age of 6, memorizing the Qur'an at 12. He also learned Arabic and Persian. Later he moved to Delhi where he studied different disciplines including mathematics and medicine. In 1837 the Church Mission Society appointed Karl Gottlieb Pfander who was known for converting Muslims to Christianity, described by Eugene Stock as "perhaps the greatest of all missionaries to Mohammedans", to Agra in Northern India, where in 1854 he engaged in a famous public debate with leading Islamic scholars. The main Muslim debater was Kairanawi, being assisted by English-speaking Muhammad Wazîr Khân and influential Islamic writer Imad ud-din Lahiz. Kairanawi used arguments from recent European theologically critical works that Pfander was unfamiliar with, having left Europe before these were published, though his main source of reference was the apocryphal sixteenth-century Gospel of Barnabas, which he held to be authentic. Following armed uprisings against the British in which he personally took part, Kairanawani (his property was confiscated by the Imperial British Raj) had to leave all his property (auctioned later), and board a ship in Bombay. Arriving at the port of Mocha, Yemen, he walked to Mecca. The journey took two years. Özege 8894.; TBTK 674/6745.‎
