‎This book presents ten chapters by an international group of scholars who examine different facets of the Three Chapters Controversy and its profound impact on these regions. The sixth-century theological controversy over the 'Three Chapters', which centred on the nature of Christ, provoked one of the most serious and long-lived religious schisms of the early Middle Ages. The fault lines ran not only between the Byzantine imperial court and the papacy, but between Rome and the churches in the former western empire?s successor states. In Italy, the schism endured into the seventh century, and the repercussions were felt long thereafter. ‎This volume collects the papers read by more than twenty Italian and German scholars at the eighteenth congress of the Societa Italiana per lo Studio del Pensiero Medievale (SISPM) and focused on the thought and influence of Anselm of Aosta (1033-1109), one of the key figures of the philosophy and theology of the Middle Ages. The collected essays are devoted to present the main aspects of Anselm?s speculation, focusing on: his theological perspectives, his methodology for the construction of a systematic and rationally knowledge, and the value of his pedagogic approach, his politics reflections, his idea of monasticism and his logical competences. Many papers are also consecrated to the widespread and diversified influence of his legacy: traces of his philosophy and his questioning method are easily recognizable in the greatest thinkers of the twelfth century (starting from Abelard and Hugues of Saint-Victor) up to Duns Scotus and even to Nicolaus de Cusa. For the variety of research approaches and the deepness and attention of the philosophical/theological analyses of the single papers, the volume aims for becoming a milestone of the studies on Anselm, his times and his interpretation of the world. ‎Summary The thirteenth century saw a blossoming of religious literature aimed at the laity composed in the vernacular as well as in Latin for the preachers who ministered to them. It has been traditional in literary history to attribute this vernacular creativity to the Fourth Lateran Council. Although the Council was part of a longer tradition of Church reform, it nonetheless crystallized theological and ecclesiastical thought in a form that was a spur to composition by writers and preachers for more than a century. The aim of this volume is not to attempt a comprehensive account of the Council or its reach in religious writing of the period but to further our understanding of how lay people, largely neglected by earlier councils, received Lateran IV's doctrinal definitions and disciplinary rules. The essays gathered here concentrate on England, where bishops enacted the Council's reforms with particular enthusiasm, and France, where the earliest instructional literature appeared. While the volume takes into account individual works that may have responded more directly to the decrees of the local bishops who enacted the canons proclaimed in 1215, it focuses on others in which the imperatives of the Fourth Lateran Council reverberate as literary echoes, revealing remarkable and often surprising connections with the larger historical and religious context. The texts discussed span the many languages of England and France of the period: Latin, Anglo-Norman, Middle English, Old French, and Occitan. The interpretation of literature that undergirds the entire collection is suitably broad, ranging from chanson de geste and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to didactic works, and encompassing along the way both biblical translations and sermons whose use of literary techniques to engage their audiences makes them 'literary', even if not always fictional. ‎Summary On 20 October 1870 pope Pius IX adjourned the First Vatican Council, because of the Italian Rissorgimento troops approaching the city of Rome. ‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. This translation makes this work accessible in English for the first time. ‎Summary The present volume develops a new conceptual perspective on late-medieval meditation, particularly in Hugh of Saint-Victor, Guigo II, and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio. For the most part, modern commentaries on the subject have relegated rhetoric to the margins of attention, if not to complete silence. In contrast, this book contends that these writers arrived at their distinctive conceptions of meditation by drawing from the Ciceronian rhetorical tradition. They did so by deepening earlier rhetorical treatments of inventio while adapting them to the Christian life. The examination of this topic is divided into three principal and related aspects. First, meditation is studied as a rhetorical notion for a specific kind of mnemonic, rational, and affective exercise. Second, that notion is used to shed light on meditation as a compositional textual practice whose outcomes bear striking analogy to what Umberto Eco called the 'open works' of the Western avant-garde. Finally, meditation emerges as a form of literary reception required for approaching and construing certain works. In exploring each of these aspects, the study shows that rhetoric radically informs, not only Hugh's, Guigo's, and Bonaventure's engagement with meditation, but also their views on salvation history, monastic life, divine revelation, scientific learning, and biblical hermeneutics. Thus, despite the omission or relative insignificance of the ars bene dicendi in most modern investigations, it is argued that rhetoric lies at the core of these authors' entire religious outlook. In this way, the present volume aims to contribute to a better understanding of these medieval figures by filling an important gap in the scholarly literature. ‎Summary Principia were an obligatory step on the medieval university path to becoming a master of theology. As inaugural lectures on the four books of the Sentences of Peter Lombard, they provided the first opportunity for a scholastic to defend a philosophical-theological worldview. These lectures were also a way for the theologian, now a sententiarius, to present himself and to make a name for himself, initially by delivering in a speech an introduction to the course and by debating with his fellows. The present book takes a collective approach to offer a survey of the evolution of the genre, mapping the dissemination of this exercise during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries across Europe. As an academic exercise, principia bridge ideas, texts, authors, and institutions across time. Exploring the corpus of surviving principia illuminates the philosophical creativity cultivated in the faculties of theology. The papers in these volumes thus not only discuss the structural aspects of principia, but also treat the philosophical and theological ideas defended and attacked during the principial debates and the topics and imagery used in the speeches. The various chapters delve into the surviving material in a common attempt, firstly, to assemble pieces of evidence from Paris and Oxford into an image portraying how, when, and by whom the principia were performed in the first European universities. ‎Summary Thomas Gallus (d. 1246) was the Abbot of Vercelli in the north of Italy. Initially a canon regular in the abbey of St Victor in Paris, he helped found a new monastery and church in the home town of his patron, Cardinal Guala Bicchieri. As well as commenting on the Canticle of Canticles three times, Thomas was renowned for his expositions of the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, commentaries which earned him the title magister in hierarchia (master of the hierarchies). This volume contains the first translation in any language of his Glosses on the Angelic (or Celestial) Hierarchy (completed in 1224), as well as his more detailed Explanation of the Angelic Hierarchy (finished in 1243). The commentaries are fascinating for their insights into Thomas's teaching that love has a higher access to an experience of God than the intellect, the role of the angelic hierarchies in the mystical return of the soul, the psychological interpretation of the angels as representing faculties of the soul, and the use of symbols representing analogical features of the divine. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Thomas Gallus, Super angelica ierarchia (CCCM, 223) and Glose super angelica ierarchia (CC CM, 223A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Summary Just as apparently universal ideas of inwardness are different over time, so the idea of the self in relation to others is subject to historical change and dependent on different contexts. Against a shared background of late antique and early medieval Christianity the thinkers who are the subject of this book develop their thoughts of a relational self within their wider concerns. Augustine is the thinker of interiority, but also of the social life. For Augustine, the opacity of others, even of oneself, and how to overcome it, is a main concern. Cassian writes about the ideal of solitude, yet neither the abbas who are the subject of his Conversations, nor his readers can avoid the company of others. For Cassian, human fellowship is instrumental in reaching the desired virtues of detachment, which then enables love for others. Gregory the Great searches for the right balance of the contemplative and the active life, but even the contemplative is not a separate individual. Gregory's instruction of the leaders of the Church emphasises the need to widen in compassion, against the constant danger for the preachers of hypocrisy and the swollenness of pride and arrogance. These three authors were among the most influential sources in later ages. Their echoes resonated in the twelfth century, when a renewed interest in interiority raises the question how the twelfth-century 'inner man' relates to others. ‎Summary Regino of Pr m (ca. 840-915), after being deposed as abbot of Pr m, became a notable musical theorist, historical chronicler, and student of the canons. His Two Books on Synodal Causes and Ecclesiastical Disciplines have generally been seen as practical handbooks to be used in the decision of synodal cases. Although they may have been used in the course of episcopal visitations, they are not to be read as limited to such use. They are to be regarded primarily as a pedagogical tool, intended to remedy an ignorance of the canonical tradition by the clerics in his part of the world. They are intended to be of use to all who have some position of responsibility within the Church and, ultimately, to every member of the Church. They are meant to help form every Christian, but particularly those clerics who have the responsibility to issue judgments and hear confessions in the Church, and to develop in them a disciplined discernment and a habit of addressing issues as they arise in personal and community life in the light of Scripture and of the long experience of the Church. They are brilliantly arranged around the device of questionnaires which fosters a case-based and tentative approach to the resolution of problems while avoiding abstraction and striving to mitigate legalism. The work was influential in its own region, but obtained much greater resonance through its eventual absorption into the Decretum of Burchard of Worms, thus affecting the whole Western canonical tradition.‎

‎Summary The Liber floridus is an encyclopedic compilation written in the first quarter of the twelfth century by a canon of Saint-Omer named Lambert. The work was conceived as an illustrated edition combining texts with images, with Lambert collecting earlier sources as well as contemporary literature in his attempt at synthesis and innovation. Time plays an important role, manifested in the liturgical calendar, the idea of the end of time, the movements of planets, the divisions of time in ages and years, local and universal history. Approached from a range of perspectives and from different disciplines, this volume investigates the reception of scientific ideas and the many concepts of time in the Liber floridus, conveyed in its images, texts, and diagrams, while also taking into account the various exegetical and philosophical contexts. The manuscript tradition of the Liber floridus is likewise considered, with particular attention given to the autograph manuscript, now held at the Ghent University Library, and to the oldest and most accurate copy of Lambert's autograph, now at the Herzog August Bibliothek, Wolfenb ttel. ‎Summary Di Tommaso d'Aquino, il pi noto e studiato teologo medievale, ci sono giunti cinque testi autografi, che vengono presentati qui per la prima volta all'interno di uno studio complessivo. La scrittura che li caratterizza talmente ostica da essersi guadagnata, gi nel Medioevo, l'appellativo di littera inintelligibilis, e spesso viene considerata una scrittura assolutamente personale. Quando si studiano le opere di un uomo considerato eccezionale, in effetti, facile incorrere nell'errore di giudicare anomalo, o straordinario, tutto ci che egli produsse, anche sul piano materiale. Obiettivo principale di questo lavoro quello di descrivere la scrittura di Tommaso e di inserirla nel suo contesto, esaminandola come un'espressione della scrittura dei dotti del tempo. Il volume suddiviso in tre parti. Dopo una descrizione codicologica dei manoscritti conservati, ci si concentra sulla scrittura attraverso una minuziosa descrizione dei fatti grafici. Infine, a partire dagli elementi materiali ricavati dall'esame degli autografi, viene esaminato il metodo di lavoro seguito da Tommaso e dai suoi collaboratori. Il punto di vista privilegiato quello della storia della cultura scritta: gli autografi di Tommaso sono analizzati nella loro materialit come testimonianze importanti che aprono spiragli di conoscenza sul lavoro intellettuale nel medioevo.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter was a master at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in the late 12th century. Among his many works is The Abel Distinctions, an alphabetized collection that treats key words by 'distinguishing' their various symbolic meanings in accordance with the traditions of biblical exegesis. The work was innovative in form and deeply conservative in content. Of special use to preachers who would shape a sermon around such sets of distinctions, it also appealed in general to clerics and laity interested in biblical meaning and allegory. The Abel Distinctions may have been the first collection of its kind; it spawned dozens of imitators through the next two centuries and more. Its immense popularity and influence is indicated by its nearly ninety extant manuscripts. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Petrus Cantor, Distinctiones Abel (CC CM, 288-288A). ‎Summary The Victorines were scholars and teachers of philosophy, liberal arts, sacred scripture, music, and contemplation at the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris. This collection focuses on the three greatest Victorines: Hugh (d. 1141), who established the direction of the school; Richard (d. 1173), who developed Victorine contemplation; and Thomas Gallus (d. 1246), who culminated Victorine contemplative thought and transmitted it to other schools, especially the Franciscans.
