‎Communicating the Most High. A Systematic Study of Person and Trinity in the Theology of Richard of St. Victor (+1173),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1996 Paperback, 540 p., 160 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503505305.‎

‎De Trinitate is Richard's opus magnum. Based on meditation of the daily liturgy in St. Victor, where the Quicumque was sung, it is a profound contribution to Trinitarian theology, combining an Augustinian grasp of the oneness of God with an original analysis of 'God is love, therefore Trinity'. Richard develops his famous new definition of persona designed to fit both tenets and applicable to both God and man. The influential master in spirituality and contemplation proves to be an acute systematic theologian following Anselm's fides quaerens intellectum, keen to find an understanding of God showing that he must be as Christians believe him to be (rationes necessariae). Den Bok puts this daring project in its Victorine context, as one kind of reflection within an integral restoring and dynamic unfolding of all human faculties and desires in the relationship with God. Communicating the Most High is concentrated on Richard's analysis of love and person, showing a wealth of detailed considerations that should be taken into account in any Trinitarian theology. It might even seem that he develops a relational concept of person anticipating postmodern Social Trinitarianism. Den Bok shows that Richard's view has too many indispensable insights against this extrapolation and that, where it seems open for it, it would not be the better systematic position to develop - as was realized by most theologians in the course of the thirteenth century. This volume of the Bibliotheca Victorina may show that Richard's Trinitarian theology is not only worth studying in its own right, but also elucidating for present day theology. Focused on the concept of person and limited to one major question, the first chapter offers an overview of twentieth century Trinitarian theology, the Epilogue offers a systematic assessment instructed by Richard. Is God the Trinity one perfect person (Barth, Rahner) or a perfect community of persons (Moltmann, Swinburne)? Three aspects involved in personhood are singled out for closer inspection: individuality (of each divine person and of God), will (of each divine person and of God) and relation (between the divine persons and between God and creation). Tracing these aspects in Richard's dense explorations the reader will be able to discover that we can, and should, learn from the great medieval theologians. Languages: English.‎

‎esse ad pulchrum esse. Schonheit in der Theologie Hugos von Sankt Viktor,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1998 Paperback, 538 p., 160 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503506722.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1994 Hardback, 235 p., + 1 map, 155 x 245 mm._Latin ISBN 9782503043913.‎

‎This edition brings together the narratives of three important 12th-century travellers to the newly established Crusader States in the Holy Land, one Anglo-Saxon: Saewulf, and two Germans: John of Wurzburg and Theoderic(us). All three narratives clearly convey the tremendous impression that these visits to the scene of Christ's wanderings on earth produced on our pilgrims. Apart from the independend value of their observations (mainly in Jerusalem, much less in Judea and Samaria), Saewulf is interesting for being the first to give a description of the situation in the Holy Land immediately after the capture of Jerusalem. His narrative reflects the often sorry state of affairs which prevailed at the end of the Fatimid period. The two others are, however, no less important witnesses, of a later period, shortly before Saladin's victory changed everything. . Iohannes Wirziburgensis (Iohannes Herbipolensis) ? ‎Corpus Christianorum. Marguerite Porete Speculum simplicium animarum.; Le mirouer des simples ames,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1986 Hardback, XIV+412 pages, 155 x 245 mm.Languages: Latin, Middle French.*new ISBN 9782503036915.‎

‎Raising Arms Liturgy in the Struggle to Liberate Jerusalem in the Late Middle Ages,‎

‎Europe's commitment to the Holy Land and to the crusade was created and shaped through several modes of action, liturgy among them. Rites articulated the collective undertaking of thinking the idea of Jerusalem and experiencing it emotionally, they energized the faithful to raise armies and provide them with the sinews of war, accompanied the crusaders into battle, sung their victories, and lamented their defeats. And rites functioned as effective channels of information and propaganda, for knowledge imparted in church was endorsed with the stamp of ecclesiastical authority and received with due deference by a Christian society. Liturgy runs, therefore, throughout the entire history of the Jerusalem crusade. This monograph opens up a new and hitherto completely unexplored type of primary source material for the study of the Crusades: crusading liturgical texts. For the first time, evidence is offered of liturgical practices that heralded and prepared the way for the First Crusade, as well as those that celebrated its victory and the liturgical practices that were devised after the defeat of Hattin in 1187. The first part of this study presents a critical edition, based on the vast number of extant manuscripts, with textual variants, reflecting the evolution of given liturgical practices in various places and times. For liturgical ritual offered the best framework for educating and forming the minds of the faithful. The second part analyses the ideological content of the crusading liturgy, and the different roles played by the large cultural-political regions (England, France, Germany) and certain religious and political institutions (papacy, monastic orders and states). The opening chapters therefore deal with the Clamor pro Terra Sancta and the Missa pro Terra Sancta (and related liturgies, the Missa contra paganos and Missa contra Turchos), while the latter chapters deal with the 'Festivitas liberationis Hierusalem'. It presents a synthesis of our knowledge of the history of Christianity and the various churches that coexisted there from the beginnings of Christianity to the fall of the Crusader Kingdoms. It also offers analytical studies of major topics and problems. While the first part is organized chronologically, the second follows a thematic plan, dealing with the major themes pertaining to the topic, from various points of view and covering several disciplinary fields: History, Theology, Archaeology, and Art History. ‎Shepherds of the Lord Priests and Episcopal Statutes in the Carolingian Period,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, VIII+246 p., 6 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503523194.‎

‎This book is the first study of the rural priesthood, its significance, and the statutes written for them in the time of the Carolingians. It seeks to trace and explain the rise and emergence in the Carolingian period of both local priests and episcopal statutes that aimed at steering their behaviour. It was in the context of Carolingian ideals of reform, formulated in court-centred circles from the late eighth century onwards, that local priests increasingly came to be seen as those that held the key to turning the local Frankish population into ideal Christians by their word and living example. First of all, however, these educators needed to be educated themselves, hence the emergence of the Episcopal statutes, a new tool to direct the local diocesan clergy into becoming the ideal 'Shepherds of the Lord' that they needed to be. Smooth as this process of empire-wide reform theoretically was, however, obstacles lurked, both from a top-down (episcopal) and a grass-roots (local) perspective on the status, role, and function of priests. Nevertheless, the ninth century saw the emergence of the priesthood and the development of their role as an important group that connected bishops with the lay inhabitants of their dioceses and, from a higher-up perspective, those who opened up the vast Carolingian country-side to the implementation of the ideal society in the minds of contemporary reformers. ‎Readers interested in the history of science and philosophy will enjoy this collection on the Islamic thinker Avicenna, whose work and influence remain understudied, even though the legacy has rightly been characterized as a Golden Age of science and philosophy. The centuries immediately following upon the monumental achievements of Avicenna (d. 1036) have been rightly characterized as a golden age of science and philosophy. Generation after generation scrutinized the Avicennan legacy, explicating and expanding upon the wealth of writings left by the master. Critical thinking in logic and astronomy, medicine and metaphysics spurred many new developments. This volume presents seventeen essays on Avicenna, his followers and his critics, many of whom are just now being introduced to western scholarship. The contributors to Avicenna and his Legacy include both established scholars as well as some of the best of the new generation. Languages : English.‎

‎Writing ?True Stories? Historians and Hagiographers in the Late Antique and Medieval Near East,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, XI+230 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527864.‎

‎A new interdisciplinary look on the relations between historiography and hagiography in the multicultural context of the late antique and medieval Middle East. The papers in this volume examine the interaction between history and hagiography in the late antique and medieval Middle East, exploring the various ways in which the two genres were used and combined to analyse, interpret, and re-create the past. The contributors focus on the circulation of motifs between the two forms of writing and the modifications and adaptations of the initial story that such reuse entailed. Beyond this purely literary question, the retold stories are shown to have been at the centre of a number of cultural, political, and religious strategies, as they were appropriated by different groups, not least by the nascent Muslim community. Writing ?True Stories? also foregrounds the importance of some Christian hagiographical motifs in Muslim historiography, where they were creatively adapted and subverted to define early Islamic ideals of piety and charisma. ‎An award-winning interdisciplinary study of the Anglo-Saxon mission of St Boniface to Hessia in the eighth century. In the year 721 the Anglo-Saxon missionary St Boniface came with his followers to Hessia, a small but turbulent province on the borders of the expanding Frankish kingdom. This book is the first dedicated interdisciplinary study of Boniface's thirty-three-year mission among the Hessians. The author relates the historical sources to the rich archaeological heritage of the region in order to describe the political and cultural context of the mission and its relationship to long-term Frankish interests in the Saxon borderlands. Thanks to the survival of many letters between the missionary community and its supporters, it is also possible to examine a symbolic literary discourse that portrayed the missionaries as heroic exiles who chose to suffer torments in a distant land for the sake of Christ. Finally, fresh evidence drawn from topography and place names is used to argue for the existence of an expansive pre-Christian sacred landscape that was one of the major obstacles faced by Boniface and his followers. The result is an innovative study that brings history and archaeology into communication with the landscape, both real and imagined, in order to reconstruct a crucial moment in the conversion of Europe in all its complexity, ambiguity, and drama. ‎Carolingian Scholarship and Martianus Capella Ninth-Century Commentary Traditions on 'De nuptiis' in Context,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XI+393 p., 18 b/w ill., 2 b/w line art, 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503531786.‎

‎An exploration of the Carolingian fascination with the writing of the African Martianus Capella, whose work reflected the pagan world of ancient gods and myths familiar to its fifth-century author. It is well known that the Carolingian royal family inspired and promoted a cultural revival of great consequence. The courts of Charlemagne and his successors welcomed lively gatherings of scholars who avidly pursued knowledge and learning, while education became a booming business in the great monastic centres, which were under the protection of the royal family. Scholarly emphasis was placed upon Latin language, religion, and liturgy, but the works of classical and late antique authors were collected, studied, and commented upon with similar zeal. A text that was read by ninth-century scholars with an almost unrivalled enthusiasm is Martianus Capella?s De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, a late antique encyclopedia of the seven liberal arts embedded within a mythological framework of the marriage between Philology (learning) and Mercury (eloquence). Several ninth-century commentary traditions testify to the work?s popularity in the ninth century. Martianus?s text treats a wide range of secular subjects, including mythology, the movement of the heavens, numerical speculation, and the ancient tradition on each of the seven liberal arts. De nuptiis and its exceptionally rich commentary traditions provide the focus of this volume, which addresses both the textual material found in the margins of De nuptiis manuscripts, and the broader intellectual context of commentary traditions on ancient secular texts in the early medieval world. ‎What were the social contexts, cultural resources, and political consequences of the new models for identification which emerged during the transition from the Roman empire to the medieval world? This volume looks at changing identities during the transition from the Roman empire to a political world defined by a different kingdoms and peoples in western Europe. It addresses 'ethnicity' in the context of alternative modes of identification, mainly Christianity and Romanness. To widen the horizon of current debates, it shows that the ancient dichotomy between barbarians and Romans is hardly helpful in understanding the complex transitions to a post-imperial age in the West. In a broad sweep of regional examples, from Spain and North Africa to Dalmatia and the British Isles, the book follows the unfolding of Christian and barbarian identities: How were both the Roman and the barbarian past used for the formation and legitimation of new identities? The ?scripts of Romanness? changed in the early Middle Ages, and so did the significance of othering pagans, heretics, or barbarians. The contributions trace the tenacity and the ambiguity of traditional narratives and signs of distinction: manuscripts and material remains, costume and epigraphy, historiography and hagiography were used in creative ways to shape civic, local, or religious communities. Many of the contributions show the fundamental importance of Christian 'strategies of identification' for creating a stronger political role for ethnicity in the post-Roman kingdoms. They thus follow a line of argument that has also been explored in the book?s companion volume in this series, Strategies of Identification: Ethnicity and Religion in Early Medieval Europe (CELAMA 13). ‎How were identities created in the early Middle Ages and when did they matter? This book explores different types of sources to understand the ways in which they contributed to making ethnic and religious communities meaningful: historiography and hagiography, biblical exegesis and works of theology, sermons and letters. Thus, it sets out to widen the horizon of current debates on ethnicity and identity. The Christianization and dissolution of the Roman Empire had provoked a crisis of traditional identities and opened new spaces for identification. What were the textual resources on which new communities could rely, however precariously? Biblical models and Christian discourses could be used for a variety of aims and identifications, and the volume provides some exemplary analyses of these distinct voices. Barbarian polities developed in a rich and varied framework of textual ?strategies of identification?. The contributions reconstruct some of this discursive matrix and its development from the age of Augustine to the Carolingians. In the course of this process, ethnicity and religion were amalgamated in a new way that became fundamental for European history, and acquired an important political role in the post-Roman kingdoms. The extensive introduction not only draws together the individual studies, but also addresses fundamental issues of the definition of ethnicity, and of the relationship between discourses and practices of identity. It offers a methodological basis that is valid for studies of identity in general. Languages : English, German, Itallian.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. X+400 p., 156 x 234 mm. Languages : English, Greek, Syriac. ISBN 9782503541310.‎

‎The shift from Late Antiquity to Early Byzantium seen in the light of the mutual relations between personal and institutional religion. This book addresses change and continuity in late antique Eastern Christianity, as perceived through the lens of the categories of institutional religion and personal religion. The interaction between personal devotion and public identity reveals the creative aspects of a vibrant religious culture that altered the experience of Christians on both a spiritual and an institutional level. A close look at the interrelations between the personal and the institutional expressions of religion in this period attests to an ongoing revision of both the patristic literature and the monastic tradition. By approaching the period in terms of 'revision', the contributors discuss the mechanism of transformation in Eastern Christianity from a new perspective, discerning social and religious changes while navigating between the dynamics of personal and institutional religion. Recognizing the creative aspects inherent to the process of 'revision', this volume re-examines several aspects of personal and institutional religion, revealing dogmatic, ascetic, liturgical, and historiographical transformations. Attention is paid to the expression of the self, the role of history and memory in the construction of identity, and the modification of the theological discourse in late antique culture. The book also explores several avenues of Jewish-Christian interaction in the institutional and public sphere.‎

‎What are myths? Are there 'correct' and 'incorrect' versions? And where do they come from? These and many other related questions are addressed in Writing Down the Myths, a collection of critical studies of the contents of some of the most famous mythographic works from ancient, classical, medieval, and modern times, and of the methods, motivations, and ideological implications underlying these literary records of myth. While there are many works on myth and mythology, and on the study of this genre of traditional narrative, there is little scholarship to date on the venerable activity of actually writing down the myths (mythography), attested throughout history, from the cultures of the ancient Middle East and the Mediterranean to those of the modern world. By assembling studies of the major literary traditions and texts through a variety of critical approaches, this collection poses - and seeks to answer -key questions such as these: how do the composers of mythographic texts choose their material and present them; what are the diverse reasons for preserving stories of mythological import and creating these mythographic vessels; how do the agenda and criteria of pre-modern writers still affect our popular and scholarly understanding of myth; and do mythographic texts (in which myths are, so to speak, captured by being written down) signal the rebirth, or the death, of mythology? ‎An examination of Old Russia's dichotomous attitude towards the Jews and Jewish culture - the appropriation of the Old Testament and the concept of a 'Chosen' people and land juxtaposed with the subjugation of the Jews. Respect for the Old Testament and its heritage was an integral feature of Russian medieval culture and played a major role in determining Old Russia's value system and its attitude toward past and contemporary events. Jerusalem and the Holy Land were ideals, and the Chosen People and Old Testament heroes were role models and standards for both the past and the present. Yet, in its ongoing effort to be recognized as the 'New Chosen People' within the family of nations, Old Russia rejected 'the Other', that is the descendants of the 'Old Chosen People'. The almost total absence of Jews in Russia throughout the ancient period, along with the central role played by Jewish tradition in the development of its culture, are a contradiction. This book presents the story of this dichotomy during the Old Russian millennium, from its inception to the late seventeenth century. The material is organized chronologically, beginning with the creation of the Kievan state in the far reaches of the Khazar polity in the ninth century, and ending with the great transformation, the reforms of Peter the Great. This is preceded by a survey of two sources that shaped the image of the land and people of Israel in the erudite world of ancient Russia: a description of the Holy Land by Abbot Daniel in the early twelfth century, and the ancient Slavic translation of Josephus?s Wars of the Jews. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XII+318 p., 1 b/w ill., 2 b/w tables, 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503516967.‎

‎The contributors to this book examine the diverse roles played by moral virtues in the political writing of the Later Middle Ages. Medieval political thought has a long tradition of scholarship, and its ethical dimension has always received sustained attention. This volume specifically concentrates on the meaning and function of virtues in a political context, a theme which has thus far been neglected. The authors deal with Latin texts (occasionally in combination with vernacular ones) from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries that define, legitimize, or criticize secular rule by using catalogues of virtues, originating from ancient philosophy as well as Christian moral theology. The contributions discuss various aspects related to this theme, such as the relation between the virtues of rulers and general moral precepts; the tension between secular or philosophical perspectives on virtue and Christian moral thought; the use of moral virtues for political ends; the balance between praise of the prince's virtues and criticism of his vices; and so forth. The medieval texts under discussion are of French, German, English, Italian, and Spanish origin, and vary from educational treatises and historiography to moral theology and political philosophy. ‎Law and Theology in Twelfth-Century England. The Works of Master Vacarius (c. 1115/20 - c. 1200),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, X+322 p., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503517827.‎

‎This book explores the legal and theological thought of Master Vacarius (c.1115/20 - c.1200), the renowned twelfth-century jurist. It focuses on this Italian master's four works, composed in the second half of the twelfth century, which deal with the resolution of conflict in law and theology. Vacarius is a paradox for scholars. They have found it difficult to reconcile his role as a legal teacher, notably through his textbook the Liber pauperum ('Book of the Poor'), which established a school of Roman law at Oxford, with his extra-legal' works on marriage, Christology and heretical theology. This study accounts for this paradox by exploring these three extra-legal treatises, composed in the 1160s and 1170s, in light of Vacarius' legal textbook. The author argues that Vacarius applies the legal method of the ius commune (European common law) to theological and sacramental debates. In this way, Vacarius represents a trend in medieval intellectual history, particular to the twelfth-century renaissance, which has been little appreciated to date - the hermeneutic of the 'lawyer-theologian'. ‎This book thrusts the reader into the intellectual turmoil of medieval Europe. In interrelated studies of largely unexplored material dating from the ninth through to the fourteenth centuries, the contributors explore changes in functions and forms of liturgical poetry and music, and of biblical interpretation. Although the twelfth century constitutes the main focus, the phenomena dealt with here had roots in earlier times and remained in circulation in later centuries. The cultural heritage of the Carolingian intellectuals tied to the palace school of Charles the Bald is examined in a liturgical context. Forms and ideas from this period were reused and transformed in the twelfth century, as represented here by sequences, tropes, Abelard?s poetry, the Gloss to Lamentations, and ritual representations or ?liturgical drama?. The two final chapters treat fourteenth-century uses and understandings of Boethius?s De institutione musica and the new genre of sequence commentaries, both dealing with later medieval views on music theory and liturgical poetry from an earlier period, thus connecting the end of the book to its beginning. The sections are interspersed with philosophical reflections on overriding themes of the contributions. The volume concludes with an anthology of poetic texts in Latin with English translations and musical transcriptions. Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, XIII+304 p., 11 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503524313.‎

‎More than any single volume has so far attempted, Mortality and Imagination is devoted to the history and literary 'life' of the dead in medieval writing. There have been many books on the medieval culture of death, but this book is the first devoted to the use and representation of the dead in English medieval writing. Mortality and Imagination is a history of the literary 'life' of the dead - in their narrative, aesthetic, and ideological formulation - a theme which up to now has been explored only fragmentarily, available only in studies of particular genres. Kenneth Rooney's book explores a wider range of texts and genres than has been attempted before, and reads the vernacular representation of the dead against the impact of one of the most intriguing cultural phenomena of the Middle Ages - the macabre - a rhetorical and artistic idiom designed to evoke the dead at their most horrifying. Tracing the models for the representation of the dead available to English writers, he offers fresh readings of texts both familiar and neglected, including sermons, tale collections, romances, drama, lyrics, and other genres in the period c.1100-1550. This book is a stimulating appraisal of the impact, in medieval insular contexts, of an international idea of great longevity and significance, and makes an important contribution to the study of death, belief, and society in pre-modern Europe. ‎The essays collected here represent the current state of research into the works of John Gower, poet, philosopher, and contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer. They assess Gower's literary output within the context of manuscript production and readership/ownership in late medieval England and the triangle of Latin, French, and English as literary and official languages in Ricardian England. Sections of the volume focus on manuscripts and the circulation of Gower's works in languages other than English. In addition, the literary and philosophical contexts that inform Gower's poetics and politics are considered here, resulting in readings of the poet's rhetorical and ethical agenda as well as his texts' intervention in and reaction to social outsiders in his contemporary London. A wide variety of critical discourses inform the readings presented here, including medieval English, French, and Latin literary studies, art history, manuscript production and reception, postmodern ethics, and historical studies. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2008 Hardback, XIV+530 p., 3 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503525969.‎

‎This interdisciplinary volume takes as its subject the multi-faceted genre of didactic literature (the literature of instruction) which constituted the cornerstone of literary enterprise and social control in medieval and early modern Europe. Following an Introduction that raises questions of didactic meaning, intent, audience, and social effect, nineteen chapters deal with the construction of the individual didactic voice and persona in the premodern period, didactic literature for children, women as the creators, objects, and consumers of didactic literature, the influence of advice literature on adult literacy, piety, and heresy, and the revision of classical didactic forms and motifs in the early modern period. Attention is paid throughout to the continuities of didactic literature across the medieval and early modern periods?its intertextuality, reliance on tradition, and self-renewal?and to questions of gender, authority, control, and the socially constructed nature of advice. Contributors particularly explore the intersection of advice literature with real lives, considering the social impact of both individual texts and the didactic genre as a whole. The volume deals with a wide variety of texts from the early Middle Ages to the eighteenth century, written in languages from Latin through the European vernaculars to Byzantine Greek and Russian, offering a comprehensive overview of this pervasive and influential genre. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529233.‎

‎Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most remarkable of medieval writers. Living to almost one hundred years of age, Tolomeo bore witness to some of the most important events of the period. He studied and travelled with Thomas Aquinas and was elected Dominican prior in Lucca and Florence. He attended the saintly Pope Celestine V during Celestine's doomed reign, lived at the papal court in Avignon, served in the households of two cardinals, and associated with the infamous Pope John XXII. At the age of eighty, Tolomeo was appointed bishop of Torcello in the Venetian Lagoon, where his superior, the Patriarch of Grado, subsequently excommunicated and jailed him. Tolomeo is known today for his major contribution to republican political thought, most notably his continuation of Thomas Aquinas's only political treatise. However, he also wrote treatises on imperial and ecclesiastical power, a commentary on the six days of creation, a massive Church history, and a European history from 1063 onward. Drawn from all known surviving sources, The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's life. It discusses each of his works, and addresses numerous problems of authorship and dating. Its companion volume, The Worldview and Thought of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca), provides an in-depth analysis of Tolomeo's beliefs and thought. Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XIV+216 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503527482.‎

‎Doubt in an Age of Faith presents the first systematic scholarly treatment of doubt and its cultural role in Latin Christendom during the long twelfth century (c. 1060-1220). Flanagan rejects the popular image of the credulous Middle Ages, showing the centrality of doubt to intellectual and religious discourses of the period. However this wide-ranging investigation is not confined to matters of faith or religious scepticism. Examining doubt as both a psychological and social phenomenon, Flanagan explores how medieval people experienced uncertainty, and the different ways in which they sought to resolve it. Both positive and negative aspects of doubt are discussed. Her proposal that the rejection of doubt as a tool of intellectual inquiry, coupled with the quest for ever-greater certainty contributed to the closing of minds that marked the thirteenth century, has obvious implications for our own times. ‎Reflecting the work of Dhira B. Mahoney, in whose honour this book is published, these essays discuss the intersections between medieval rhetoric and various sorts of medieval literature, with particular focus on romance. This volume honours the academic career of Professor Dhira B. Mahoney, recently retired from the Department of English at Arizona State University, who is well known for her rhetorical readings of medieval literature. Professor Mahoney?s scholarship employs rhetorical theory in readings of late medieval literature, particularly prologues and epilogues, women?s writings, and Arthuriana. As a response to her work, Romance and Rhetoric offers rhetorical readings of a variety of literary pieces from the late Middle Ages, especially for those authors and genres on which Professor Mahoney has published. Its collected essays provide interdisciplinary studies of art, social and literary history, manuscript transmission, and women?s studies in relation to texts in Middle English, Latin, German, and French. In particular, the essays in this volume focus on the writings of courtly authors such as Chaucer, Lydgate, Malory, Guillaume de Machaut, Christine de Pizan, Chretien de Troyes, and others. In keeping with the ancient tradition of analysing rhetorical principles in the structure of an art work, they also examine the rhetoric of the manuscript art connected to these authors and the genres in which they wrote. This volume thus fills a gap in medieval literary scholarship, as it evaluates with scrutiny how rhetorical teachings or medieval poetic strategies inform the writing of romances. ‎Marcia Colish is one of the most influential scholars of the history of medieval and early modern thought, the author of numerous books and scores of articles in the field, as well as a pioneering President of the Medieval Academy of America. This volume honours her accomplishments with papers by her many colleagues, friends, and former students, who are themselves prominent scholars from across a range of disciplines. The chapters are diverse chronologically and topically, yet they are all stimulated by themes that Prof. Colish has explored during her long and distinguished career. They address the richness of European intellectual history between the twelfth and the sixteenth centuries, treating the multiple heritages of philosophy, theology, political theory, historiography, classical reception, and many other subjects to which her scholarship extends. The volume demonstrates the power of ideas in the development of European history generally, revealing that the careful study of the works of the 'mind' does indeed 'matter'. Languages : English.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2013 Hardback, X+455 pages ., 2 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm.*NEW ISBN 9782503527543.‎

‎Medievalists and Renaissance specialists contribute to this compelling volume examining how and why the classics of Greek and Latin culture were taught in various Western European curricula (including in England, Scotland, France, Germany, and Italy) from the tenth to the sixteenth centuries. By analysing some of the commentaries, glosses, and paraphrases of these classics that were deployed in medieval and Renaissance classrooms, and by offering greater insight into premodern pedagogic practice, the chapters here emphasize the 'pragmatic' aspects of humanist study. The volume proposes that the classics continued to be studied in the medieval and Renaissance periods not simply for their cultural or 'ornamental' value, but also for utilitarian reasons, for 'life lessons'. Because the volume goes beyond analysing the educational manuals surviving from the premodern period and attempts to elucidate the teaching methodology of the premodern period, it provides a nuanced insight into the formation of the premodern individual. The volume will therefore be of great interest to scholars and students interested in medieval and Renaissance history in general, as well as those interested in the history of educational theory and practice, or in the premodern reception of classical literature. ‎J. M. Blythe;‎

‎Worldview and Thought of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca),‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, XVIII+276 p., 1 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503529264.‎

‎Tolomeo Fiadoni (1236-1327) was one of the most important political theorists and historians of the Middle Ages. He was central to developing a theory for the practices of Northern Italian republicanism and was hostile to kingship, portraying it as despotic and inappropriate for virtuous and freedom-loving people. He was the first writer to compare Aristotle's examples of Greek mixed constitutions - Sparta, Crete, and Carthage - with the Roman Republic, the ancient Hebrew polity, the Church, and medieval communes, yet he remained a staunch defender of the absolute secular and spiritual monarchy of the pope. Blythe explores various tensions in Tolomeo's work that are often overlooked in scholarly treatments of him, and which derive from cultural preconceptions and the diverse influences on him: Aristotle, Augustine, apologists for papal power, his life in the Dominican Order, his educational experience with Thomas Aquinas, and his social position as a member of Northern Italy's ruling class. These factors exerted contradictory influences on Tolomeo and led him to a sometimes unsuccessful intellectual struggle for consistency. This book is the first full-length study of Tolomeo's thought and it gives full consideration not only to the political writings for which he is most known, but also to his historical and exegetical works. It is the companion to The Life and Works of Tolomeo Fiadoni (Ptolemy of Lucca). Languages : English, Latin.‎

‎Erasmus and the Renaissance Republic of Letters,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. X+392 p., 5 b/w ill., 156 x 234 mm.Languages : English, French, Italian. ISBN 9782503530307.‎

‎This volume contains a selection from among the papers delivered at a conference held to mark the centenary of a watershed event in early modern studies: the appearance of Volume I of P. S. Allen?s edition of Erasmus?s letters. Erasmus scholarship has been a growing field since the late twentieth century, owing to the enormous volume and vast intellectual range of his oeuvre and to the reprinting of his works from the 1960s onwards, while Allen?s edition has proved the basis for research for scholars of almost every aspect of Renaissance humanism and the Reformation. The conference aimed to investigate as many aspects as possible of Erasmus?s literary, educational, rhetorical, and theological activities and of their influence on the emerging Europe of the early modern era. The essays collected here present a wide-ranging overview of the current state of Erasmus scholarship, including a survey of the discoveries of letters to and from Erasmus unknown to Allen, the printing for the first time since 1529 of the opening section of an important letter to him from Germain de Brie, an account of the crucial role played by Ulrich von Hutten in the publication of the dialogue Iulius exclusus e coelis, and several studies of the influence of Erasmian thought on early modern political and theological controversies. With its broad coverage of the current field, the volume will prove indispensable to Erasmus scholars.‎

‎Studies on Medieval Empathies,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. X+380 p., 11 b/w ill. + 6 colour ill., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503530314.‎

‎Empathy is a deep feeling or intuition for kinship transcending self-preoccupied individuality. This book is about empathy in the Middle Ages, before it had a name. The authors begin by tracing the origins of empathy in pre-Christian Antiquity and early Christianity, especially in mysteries of divine justice, by which the good often suffered and the wicked prospered and, as with surgical healing, compassion was manifested by inflicting pain. The authors also explore many facets of empathy's development in the Latin West, criss-crossing the artificial borders of academic departments to reveal interlocking connections that give emotional power to images, whether verbal, pictorial, or performative. In a powerful multi-disciplinary collaboration, they identify conditions and limits of empathy, and areas in which the dynamic between insiders and outsiders forced subversive explorations of what it meant to be human. The doctrine of Christ as mediator of divine love dominated medieval thought about empathy as a human instinct. Taken together, like magnetic poles, two pictures in this book represent that mediation in action. The cover illustration, a mid-ninth-century ivory plaque from Carolingian Gaul, depicts Christ, the Divine Word, Love incarnate, glorified, enthroned, and adored by angels as creator, judge, and teacher. The second, Plate 1, from the same period and region, represents the act that sealed the mediation of divine love to humanity: Christ the man, tortured and dying from love.Languages : English, Latin.‎
