The second part examines exchanges between Christian culture and ephemeral products of epigraphic literacy, as expressed through Scandinavian rune sticks, East Slavonic birchbark documents and church graffiti. ‎Limiting itself to the vital centuries when the late Roman West reshaped itself into a first "Europe," the conference explored the dominant conception of human nature in that era: that human existence was both body (in the visible world of material things) and soul (in the invisible world of spirit). Assimilating it to indigenous cultures in the Roman West, many alien to the ancient Mediterranean world, precipitated sea-changes in the understanding of human psychology. It also created dangerously subversive disequilibriums in the collective mentality within elites and between them and majority cultures. The papers in this volume investigate numerous configurations of a new culture taking shape in that volatile environment. ‎The medieval Hebrew exegesis in its entirety is indisputably a major achievement in the work of the Jewish sages. ‎Richard Rolle (d.1439) played a major part in the growth of affective spirituality in England during the fourteenth century. A prolific mystical writer who lived as a hermit and drew his literary inspiration from the great monastic authors of the twelfth century, he nonetheless anticipated many of the teachings of his slightly later contemporaries and his work looks forward to the later fourteenth-century world of increasing lay involvement in spiritual life. While his original audience may have consisted mainly of nuns and anchoresses (for writings in English) and monks and secular priests (for writings in Latin), many of his works can be read as popularizations of the traditions he inherited, and were ultimately designed to reach a much broader audience. The book contains editions of one work by Rolle, the Emendatio vitae , and one medieval compilation of extracts from his writings, the Orationes ad honorem nominis Ihesu. The Emendatio vitae is one of Rolle's late works and aims to adapt an originally specialized programme for spiritual transformation to the needs of general Christian readers; most of the last third of the work consists of an arrangement of passages from his earlier writings. This process of adaptation was taken up by others, who compiled works of "Rolleana" out of other such excerpted passages. The second work edited here, the Orationes ad honorem nominis Ihesu, is a member of this little-studied secondary canon, being made up of purple passages from several of Rolle's works, which it presents as a catena of devotions to the "holy name" of Jesus. Besides providing an anthology of Rolle's rich prose styles, the Orationes exemplifies the way in which passages of his writing could be detached from their original contexts and pressed into the service of an important late medieval devotion.‎

‎The work edited here (in linked excerpts), an anonymous composition in 1611 rhymed hexameters, is an example of the exegetical type of biblical versification that became popular from the eleventh century onwards. The poem, likely composed in the middle to late eleventh century, forms a lengthy commentary on the genealogy of Jesus as it is recorded in the first seventeen verses of the gospel of Matthew, but the poet ranges widely over the entire Bible for his material, frequently drawing on the Old Testament (especially the books of Genesis and Kings) for details about the characters dealt with. Some of the characters in the poem are not even mentioned in Matthew, e.g. the first three sons of the patriarch Jacob; and the poet tackles two of the problems presented by Matthew's genealogy: that without counting Jeconiah twice, the division of the forty-two generations of Jesus' ancestry into three sets of fourteen is incomplete, and that the father of Joseph (the husband of Mary) is called Jacob in Matthew but Heli in Luke. This poem's solution to the latter problem is particularly convoluted, and not based on any of the poet's known or presumed sources. In the manuscript edited here, Heidelberg, Universitatsbibliothek, MS. Salem IX 15, dating to the late eleventh or early twelfth century, the poem is accompanied by extensive interlinear and marginal glosses, which provide lexical, grammatical, and syntactical aids as well as summaries, interpretations, and comments on the text, thus giving much essential assistance to readers of verses that are frequently very difficult to construe. The Liber generationis was edited in full by Martin Rodel in 1999; the present edition is of extracts only (totalling 860 verses), preserving as well as possible the internal logic of the text, but reducing its length in order to make the work more useful for teaching purposes and more accessible to a student audience. The 860 verses are accompanied by all their glosses, printed on facing pages; extensive footnotes to both the poem and the glosses supply references to biblical and other sources, clarifications of the biblical narrative presented by the poet (especially when the medieval glosses do not provide sufficient help), and translation aids. The introduction to the edition discusses the content and organization of the poem, its rhyme and meter, the complexity and difficulty of its language and the unusual features of its style, the nature of the codex, and the glosses; the section on glosses includes examples of how the poem and glosses must be read together to form a complete understanding of the text. A select bibliography, textual notes, and three appendices - a list of all the biblical names mentioned in the text, a genealogical table, and a list of the interpretations given to the biblical names in the text - complete the volume. This book will be of interest to students and teachers of Medieval Latin, literary and linguistic scholars, all those interested in medieval glossed texts and the use of such texts as teaching tools, and scholars of biblical versification and exegesis in the Middle Ages.‎

This volume offers a first edition of three homiletic works by the twelfth-century canon regular William of Newburgh: a homily on Luke 11.27 that explores in two successive sections the literal and typological exegesis of the passage, respectively; a sermon on the Trinity, structured as an extended exegesis of the Gloria Patri and the Benedicamus, and owing much to Augustinian notions of the Trinitarian structure of the human soul as an image of God; and a sermon on the martyrdom of St Alban which extrapolates from relatively brief references to the details of the narrative in order to explore the nature of martyrdom and the union of the martyr?s soul with Christ. Together they constitute a significant witness to the development of meditative theology as a vehicle of spirituality in England in the generations after Anselm. In keeping with the principles of the Toronto Medieval Latin Texts series, the texts are edited from a single MS witness, Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Rawlinson C. 31 in the case of the first two works and that of London, Lambeth Palace Library MS 73 in the case of the third, with judicious appeal to the other two MSS for variant readings only where the reading of the base MS is clearly defective. ‎This study is focused on BL MS Harley 494, a small manuscript book which can be dated between 1532 and 1535 and which has many of the features of a preces privatae volume, or private prayer book. It contains prayers in English and Latin but also a number of brief devotional treatises in English. MS Harley 494 possesses two more features of interest: it belonged to a Hampshire widow, Anne Bulkeley (and possibly later to her daughter Anne, a nun at Amesbury Priory); and it emerged from a Birgittine textual community. Barratt edits and annotates the complete manuscript to provide an accessible and informative edition of this little known manuscript. However, Anne Bulkeley and her Book is not a conventional edition of a late Middle English text. Rather, Barratt carefully contextualizes the manuscript within its historical background just before the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and meticulously investigates the varied, and often unusual, sources of many of the individual items in the book. In addition, the discussion encompasses several related manuscripts (principally Lambeth Palace MS 3600 and the so-called Burnet Psalter (Aberdeen University Library MS 25)). This broad focus enables the volume to examine not only the evolution of the manuscript as a whole, but also to answer wider questions of its owner?s identity, her family connections, and her (and her book?s) place in literary, cultural, and religious history.‎

‎This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.‎

‎This first supplement to my An Annotated Bibliography on Ibn Sina (1979-1989), published in 1991, informs the reader about all new studies on Ibn Sina (Avicenna) published in the period 1990-1994, and also offers corrigenda and addenda to the former bibliography. Also in the supplement, attention is paid to Western, and to non-Western publications. Moreover, it has been tried to be even more exhaustive by including publications, which have not Ibn Sina (Avincenna) in the title, but which nevertheless are offering important and innovative information about his life or thought. First, an overview is given of the new editions and/or translations of Ibn Sina's works, which are once more identified according to the classic bibliographies of G.C. Anawati and M.Mehdavi. Hereafter, separate chapters are dedicated to studies of a biographical and a bibliographical nature. No less than ten chapters are devoted to materials dealing with Ibn Sina's philosophical thought (e.g., logic, psychology, metaphysics, religious thought, sources, influences both in the East and the West). Finally, materials dealing with in two separate chapters. It has to be noted that almost all publications are annotated with a summary of their most original points and a short critical evaluation. ‎Si nous sommes bien informes concernant la vie scientifique et l'importance de la medecine a la Cour des Papes pendant le XIIIe siecle, il n'en est pas de meme pour le XIVe siecle a la Cour des Papes d'Avignon. Aucune etude d'ensemble n'a paru jusqu'a present et la vie culturelle, scientifique et intellectuelle qui s'y deroula reste encore peu connue a bien des egards. Afin de pallier cette lacune, plusieurs chercheurs ont accepte de presenter le resultat de recherches ponctuelles afin de donner un premier apercu de la richesse de ce milieu. Les exposes illustrent la dimension interdisciplinaire du projet et portent surtout sur la bibliotheque des Papes, la production de manuscrits et les debats theologiques qui eurent lieu a Avignon. En outre, on trouvera un nouvel inventaire des manuscrits de la bibliotheque de Clement VI, realise a l'aide de decouvertes recentes ainsi que l'edition critique inedite de quelques textes susceptibles de mieux mettre en lumiere les debats theologiques qui se eurent lieu a la Cour des Papes. Les differents Pontifes eurent chacun leur politique et leurs interets. Mais de maniere generale, on peut dire que sous leur pontificat la vie culturelle, scientifique, intellectuelle et artistique se developpa de maniere brillante. Il reste a esperer que ce volume incitera les chercheurs a montrer dans des recherches futures qu'il reste encore bien des aspects a mettre en lumiere et bien des decouvertes a faire dans les manuscrits et les archives. ‎El interes por las formas literarias de la literatura medica ha ido creciendo progresivamente ya que atiende cada vez mas a las formas de la literatura medica caracteristicas de las distintas epocas, compartidas en su mayoria con otras ramas de la ciencia como la filosofia, la teologia o el derecho. Pero faltaba una vision de conjunto de estos textos medicos desde el punto de vista literario. La tipologia de esos tratados es un indicio revelador de su origen, finalidad, cultura del autor y demanda social. Este estudio pretende mostrar un panorama general de las formas literarias de los estudios medicos y sus medios de expresion. El estudio del comportamiento de los escritores medicos ante el hecho de escribir proporciona una dimension, como complemento, de gran relieve para los estudios estrictamente doctrinales. El escritor es un hombre de su tiempo y, como tal, refleja sus usos y modos. Enraizados en la tradicion de la Antiguedad y siguiendo una distribucion armonica de la medicina /diaetetica, pharmaceutica/ y /chirurgia/, los generos literarios de la literatura medica medieval, por influjo de la filosofia y teologia escolasticas, conocieron una riqueza asombrosa de formas literarias, como /summae, specula, compendia, practica, concordantiae, synonyma, disputationes, problemata, accessus/, /tacuina/, /secreta, consilia/, etc., que afectaron tambien a la tipologia de su lengua. El Renacimiento fue otra epoca de renovacion en la que continuan algunos generos de corte tradicional, otros decaen o se transforman, mientras que toman cuerpo otras actividades mas filologicas a veces que doctrinales, como las ediciones o los /comentarios/ criticos. Cada epoca revela los problemas con los que se enfrentaron los escritores medicos al intentar forjar unas formas literarias y una terminologia basadas en unos conocimientos medicos ?en muchos casos expresados originariamente en otra lengua? y darles la forma literaria que consideraban mas apropiada para publicar sus logros. Un estudio como este puede ser util para todos aquellos que desde el campo de la Filologia, la Historia en general o de la Historia de la Ciencia y de la Medicina o de la cultura en particular, deseen adentrarse en la literatura medica.‎

‎El Grupo de investigacion de la Universidad de Valladolid Speculum medicinae, compuesto por una docena de filologos clasicos, en el que colaboran tambien un historiador de la medicina y una arabista, lleva trabajando muchos anos en la elaboracion del que se ha llamado Diccionario latino de andrologia y ginecologia (DILAG). En este momento se encuentra ya en fase de revision. El DILAG es un diccionario tecnico especializado que recoge, en las fuentes medicas mas significativas de la Antiguedad, la Edad Media y el Renacimiento, terminos medicos latinos encuadrados en las especialidades de la andrologia, la ginecologia y la embriologia. En la redaccion del DILAG sus colaboradores han encontrado diferentes aspectos de la medicina medieval dignos de estudio, que abarcan los campos de la anatomia, la fisiologia, la patologia y la terapeutica o problemas relacionados con ellos, como la sexualidad o la deformacion de terminos tecnicos mal interpretados. Con sus trabajos pretenden mostrar las multiples aplicaciones, tanto medicas como filologicas o historicas, que los estudiosos pueden llevar a cabo con el material de dicho diccionario y apreciar las posibilidades investigadoras que brinda. Algunas de estas aportaciones de caracter parcial se presentaron en el IVe Congres europeen d?etudes medievales, organizado por la FIDEM en Palermo el ano 2009, y otras han sido elaboradas expresamente para este libro. Ahora, gracias a la amable invitacion de la direccion de la FIDEM, se reunen en esta monografia, a modo de capitulos autonomos, los trabajos mencionados, con el fin de contribuir al conocimiento e investigacion de un tipo de lexico que cada vez atrae mas la atencion de los estudiosos.‎

‎La publication des actes d?un colloque organise a Erice en 1994 sur le theme Les manuscrits des lexiques et glossaires de l?Antiquite tardive a la fin du moyen age, a donne une impulsion nouvelle aux etudes consacrees a ces recueils inedits. Une documentation tres interessante avait ete rassemblee et a deja donne lieu a des editions critiques de textes qui n?etaient pas encore publies a cette epoque. Mais tous les secteurs n?avaient pas ete abordes pendant cette rencontre, etant donne l?ampleur du sujet. A la demande de plusieurs chercheurs, il a donc semble interessant de faire le point, quinze ans apres, pour evaluer l?etat d?avancement des recherches, mais aussi pour couvrir des domaines qui n?avaient pas encore ete envisages. Beaucoup de progres ont ete faits depuis, surtout dans le domaine des lexiques bilingues et trilingues ainsi que pour certains recueils systematiques consacres a diverses branches du savoir, comme la medecine, les sciences, la grammaire ou la philosophie, par exemple. Plusieurs equipes nationales et internationales travaillent d?ailleurs desormais dans ces secteurs. Le but de ce volume, qui rassemble les actes du colloque organise en 2010, est donc de faire un nouvel etat de la question et de dresser une liste de priorites pour les glossaires et lexiques encore inedits. Le volume presente des etudes sur des recueils qui datent du IXe au XVe siecle. Certains d?entre eux illustrent d?ailleurs la progression des langues vernaculaires dans ce domaine. Le volume constitue donc non seulement un complement a l?ouvrage publie en 1996, mais donne aussi un apercu des recueils qui meriteraient d?etre edites rapidement.‎
