‎First American edition, 8vo (225 x 140 mm), xvi, 439, [1]pp., text somewhat browned in places, orig. boards, upper board detached, spine perished, stitching loose, uncut. Drew, a metaphysician and one of the early Cornish Methodists, was an intimate friend of Dr. Thomas Coke and Adam Clarke. His metaphysical disquisitions obtained for him an honorary M.A. from Scotland, and the offer of a chair in the University of London, which he declined. This work was published as a successor to his very successful "Essay on the Immateriality and Immortality of the Soul". This book was not quite so popular, though Drew's limited philosophical skills probably appear to better advantage here than in the earlier work.‎

Jodocus Clichtoveus, Flemish Reformhumanist important and controversial Catholic theologian of the Reformation period; one of the most influential teachers at the Sorbonne in Paris, initially stood on the side of the humanists and suggested a result of religious disputes on the side of strict scholasticism. ‎TOWGOOD (Micaiah)‎

‎Dipping not the only Scriptural and Primitive Manner of Baptizing. And supposing it were, yet a strict adherence to it not obligatory on us.‎

‎Third edition, 24pp., disbound. This pamphlet defends the rite of infant baptism, but rejects the idea that infants can have no salvation without it. Towgood was a Dissenting minister in Exeter, and an avowed Arian. He corresponded with John Wesley, and in 1755, John and Charles Wesley read together Towgood's "A Gentleman's Reasons for his Dissent from the Church of England", in preparation for their Conference at Leeds. Wesley described it as "an elaborate and lively tract."‎
