‎TEXT FROM 1 TIMOTHY AND 2 TIMOTHY‎

‎Italy later 12th century. 530 x 320 mm. 20 7/8 x 12 1/2". Double column 49 lines in a beautiful proto-gothic book hand. Rubrics running title chapter numbers and initials in red WITH A LARGE STRIKING "P" painted in red green blue and yellow with white vine-stem work. One margin of recto somewhat smudged a hint of wrinkling but in general EXTREMELY WELL PRESERVED THE GORGEOUS INITIAL IN PERFECT CONDITION. This is a spectacular example of an Atlantic Bible leaf written in an elegant and clearly quite talented hand. The text is an excerpt of the First and Second Epistles to Timothy part of the 13 books of the New Testament known as the Pauline Epistles which are believed to have been written by St. Paul to his disciples. The striking initial that opens 2 Timothy is an excellent example of the typical Italian decorative mode of the 12th century featuring pleasing knot work and white vine-stem designs. One can also see hints of yellow paint in the initial a color favored over gold leaf at this place and time. Even as a single leaf this item provides a memorable sense of majesty; one can easily imagine how the magnificent volume as a whole would have communicated the importance of God's word. From time to time in the marketplace one sees Atlantic Bible leaves salvaged from bindings but it is uncommon to encounter single leaves that have not been recycled especially leaves in agreeable condition and more especially leaves with splendid capitals as here. unknown‎

‎Pacianus, fourth-century bishop of Barcelona, wrote the De paenitentibus and the De baptismo and exchanged ideas, in two letters, with Sympronianus, member of the heretical group of Novatians. In these letters he gently exposed his reflections against the discourses of the Novatians and in his Contra Novatianorum tractatus, in his own words by no means sluggishly discussed them. The writings of Pacianus which have survived are preserved in three manuscripts: Vaticanus Reginensis Lat. 331, Gratianopolitanus 262 and Parisinus 2182. The codex Mazarinus should hardly be mentioned. Excerpts are found in Lugdunensis 5804 and a manuscript of Vitry burnt in 1944. In the mid-ninth century Florus the Deacon, director of the scriptorium of Lyon, well skilled in Christian doctrine and writings, had taken care that the writings of Pacianus were preserved in the codex Reginensis. ‎Vol. IV of the series Autographa Medii Aevi is a study of the original manuscript of the Liber Floridus (Ghent, University Library, MS 92). This encyclopedical compilation of the early twelfth century (finished 1121) was composed, written and illustrated by an obscur canon of the Chapter of our Lady in Saint-Omer (France, dept. du Pas de Calais). It may be considered one of the earliest illustrated medieval encyclopedias and its maps, diagrams and pictures (some of them masterpieces of Romanesque art) are world-famous. Due to its apparent lack of logical structure, however, Lambert's work has often been dismissed as an unorganized compilation. Against this still prevailing opinion the present book shows that the encyclopedia is the expression of a highly personal global view of the world. It was to be a brilliant synthesis, pervaded by an emphatic sense of symbolism, allegory and eschatology. The close codicological and textual analysis of the complete work shows also why Lambert failed to achieve his object in its full splendour; how especially external circumstances have caused a gradual weakening of the original train of thought as well as of the original beauty of the manuscript. The book focuses on the fundamental links between Lambert's thoughts and the material structures he had to create to give them their place in his book. Prof. Derolez has specialized for more than thirty years into the study of the Liber Floridus. In 1968 he edited the original manuscript in a celebrated facsimile and text edition. In 1978 his doctoral thesis on Lambert's work was published. The present work is the synthesis of a life's research.
