A New Hieroglyphic Bible; With Above Four Hundred Cuts
Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover

From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. The English Version of the Polyglot Bible; Containing the Old and New Testaments; with a copious and original selection of references to parallel and illustrative passages exhibited in a manner hitherto unattempted. & The New Testament of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. London: Printed for Samuel Bagster ca. 1845. Neat ink inscription at head of title-page "Presented to the Honble Mrs. Baptist Noel 1845." Two volumes bound in one. Small octavo 6 3/8 x 4 inches; 162 x 102 mm. Printed on India Paper. x 586; ii 188 pp. Thirteen folding maps or plans some with colored outlines five folding. Contemporary purple velvet binding ca. 1844 with gilt board edges and clasps stamped "Bagster" upper cover with gilt onlay engraved "Polyglot Bible / English Version". Purple velvet paste-downs with rectangular center panel of ivory watered silk matching end-leaves all edges gilt and gauffered. Housed in the original 'Bagster' ivory watered silk lined full vellum case with single gilt clasp stamped "Bagster". Covers decoratively stamped in gilt with onlays of red green and blue morocco. Spine with similar morocco onlays and red morocco label lettered in gilt. Small 1 38 inch split to top of front hinge vellum a little dusty otherwise near fine. This charming little binding was presented to the wife of The Reverend The Honourable Baptist Wriothesley Noel 1798-1873. On 17 October 1826 Noel married Jane Baillie of Dochfour whose distinguished family was descended from John de Balliol founder of Balliol College Oxford. We have seen several 'Bagster Bibles' in similar purple velvet bindings over the years - if they had a case it was a rather plain purple morocco - BUT - we have never seen a decorated vellum case as shown here. Samuel Bagster 1772-1852 was educated at Northampton under the Rev. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. There is another state according to Herbert that is priced 4s. and is wanting the Apocrypha. It is possible that they sold the leaves with and without the Apocrypha thus the difference in price. Because the sheets were sold unbound it is possible that they were issued as parts. 31 leaves from the Apocrypha E4 through I2 are misbound into Volume IV. In their correct spot are bound 2 blank leaves. Old Testament and New Testament have separate title-pages. With a chart page after the Old Testament and after the New Testament. Bible is complete. Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards. Ink title to spine of each volume. Previous owner's bookplate and signature dated 1770 on front pastedown of each volume. Title-page of each volume with some old ink manuscript notes to top margin. Boards a bit rubbed and bumped. Some minor staining and wrinkling to bottom margin of signature Iii. Overall very good or better copy. Just two years after Joseph Bentham published this present copy his Bible of 1762 was marked the "standard edition" according to Darlow & Moule. Herbert 1131. With the "Calendar" which is printed in red and black. Decorative woodcut head- and tail-pieces and initials. Contemporary reversed paneled calf. Boards ruled in blind. Boards with a small amount of rubbing and chipping mainly along the edges. First title-page laid-down. Some loss to margins but not affecting the engraving. Leaves A2-A4 To The Reader bound on stubs and with lower marginal repairs. From the Calendar Leaf C2 with marginal repair and Leaves C3-C4 remargined. Leaf D1 with paper repair only affecting ruled border. Leaves X1-X2 with some tape repairs and a few holes with some loss of a few words. Leaves PP5-PP6 with some dampstaining. Leaves UUU3-UUU4 with bottom margin repaired not affecting text. Leaf ZZZ4 with a closed tear repaired but with some loss of text. Aside from these few mostly preliminary leaves overall this copy is internally very fresh and clean. A very good copy. ìThe true 1613 folio edition of King Jamesí Bible; easily distinguishable from the other large folio editions by its smaller type. The preliminary leaves are set up as in the other large folio editions but the text is printed in smaller type with 72 lines instead of 59 lines to the full column." Herbert 322. The Genealogies which accompany this book have a similar typographical history to that of the King James Bible itself. John Speed was granted a patent in 1610 for ten years to issue and insert his Genealogies and double-page general map engraved by Elstrack in every edition of this Bible. ìThe King James Bible or the Authorized Version as it is now commonly but not strictly accurately known was the outcome of the conference summoned at Hampton Court by the King in January 1604 in an attempt to settle the quarrels in the Church of England arising from the Puritan zeal of some of its members. It was the leader of the Puritan party John Reynolds the President of Corpus Christi College Oxford who first suggested the idea of a new translation.It has been described as ëthe only literary masterpiece ever to have been produced by a committeeí and was the work of nearly fifty translators organized in six groups.Being based on a wider range of classical and oriental scholarship than its predecessors the Authorized Version was a more learned text.No new English translation was produced until the Revised Version of 1881 and the influence of the Authorized Version may best be described in the words of G.M. Trevelyan. ëFor every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Glove there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. Mother-of-Pearl carving a traditional handicraft in Bethlehem is said to have been brought to the city by Franciscan friars from Italy in the fifteenth century. Others believe it was introduced by Italian Crusaders sometime between the eleventh and thirteenth centuries. However it began Bethlehem became famous as a center of the craft. Models of churches and mosques inlaid in Bethlehem with mother-of-pearl are on display in museums throughout the world. The first exhibition in the West of mother-of-pearl artifacts from Palestine was at the New York World's Fair in 1852. A half-title page inserted before the Psalmes. Woodcut New Testament title page dated 1599. Revelations notes by Junius. Bound-in is the Booke of Psalmes with undated title page. The last page / s of the Psalmes following the Lamentations is / are missing. According to Herbert: "There are many editions bearing this date which while agreeing closely are yet distinct.The nominal date 1599 is probably untrue in almost every case; they were apparently published at different times in Amsterdam and Dort and adopted by Barker. This copy most closely resembles Lea Wilson's No.6 of this series being Herbert 248 with Esther I1: .seuen an twen- ty prouinces. The Geneva version of the Old Testament translated by William Whittingham Anthony Gilby Thomas Sampson and perhaps others with Laurence Tomson's revision of the Geneva version of the New Testament and his translation of Franciscus Junius' translation of Revelation. Fine replica black morocco attractively gilt in 17th century style cover with design of quatrefoils formed of floral sprig and drawer-handle tools the background studded with small floral and star tools all enclosed by a frame of gilt rules and decorative rolls raised bands spines gilt in compartments with flower centerpiece and scrolling cornerpieces gilt titling. In sturdy black cloth slipcases. Woodcut title page borders headpieces tailpieces and initials. Title page of volume II with ink ownership inscription of Thos. Gibbon or Gibson Esqr. Darlow & Moule 231; Herbert 300; STC 2207. Title pages and first few leaves of each volume somewhat soiled first and last quires in volume II with repairs to edges no loss to text first volume with intermittent staining touching text but obscuring just one word one on page a touch of browning to page edges but a very good copy generally clean and fresh with nothing approaching a fatal defect in an unworn binding. This is the first English version of the Catholic Old Testament appearing more than two decades after the 1582 New Testament was published. The translation of the Old Testament had apparently been finished by the same persons who had produced the Rheims New Testament--Gregory Martin William afterwards Cardinal Allen and Richard Bristow--but according to the preface of the 1582 New Testament it sat unpublished "for lacke of good financial meanes to publish the whole in such sort as a worke of so great charge and importance requireth." This lack is explained in the preface to the 1609-10 Old Testament as due to "one general cause the Catholics' poore estate in banishment." Darlow & Moule points out that the Rheims version of the Old Testament translation did undergo some revisions between the 1580s and the publication date of 1609-10 in order to conform to the authorised recension of the Vulgate published in 1592 under the authority of Clement VIII a translation with which Cardinal Allen 1532-94 had assisted. The annotations in the 1609-10 version of the Old Testament are decidedly less controversial than in the 1582 New Testament. According to the DNB biography of translator Gregory Martin ca. 1542-82 "The appearance of a Catholic Bible in English undermined traditional protestant criticism that the Roman church kept scripture out of the hands of the laity. Instead protestant theologians such as Thomas Cartwright William Whitaker and William Fulke attacked the credentials of the translators and denounced their work as filled with error. This is the true 1st edition published from 1611 to 1613. This is the second state with the misprint in Ruth 3:15 corrected from "he" to "she". Folio edition measuring 15.25 x 10.5 inches. The New Testament is dated 1611 and the general titlepage is dated 1613. Scholars believe most of the book was printed in 1611 but not bound and released until 1613. There are two versions: the "Great He" Bible and the "Great She" Bible depending on whether the misprint in Ruth is present. Collates per Herbert Historical Catalogue of Printed Editions of the English Bible 1525-1961 number 319. Darlow & Moule #246. Printing and the Mind of Man #114. General title page heavily chipped repaired with loss to the bottom right quarter of the page. Although this copy offered here has the Genealogies it does not contain the map. The map is seldom present and some scholars question whether it should truly be considered part of the book or seen as a later add-on. Minor wear and spotting thoughout with some heavy staining at the beginning. Some leaves particularly stained include LI3-6 Mmm2 and R4 & 5 in the NT. Some marginal repair from Hebrews to the end of the NT with the final leaf of Revelation present in facsimile. Recently restored with a full leather binding and custom protective clamshell box. The King James Bible is the first official English translation of the scriptures. When King James took the English throne multiple English translations were used by the Church of England. Recognizing the disunity which this caused he appointed a group of the day's top scholars to produce an Authorized Version of the Bible. The King James Version KJV as it came to be known is not only one of the most widely used versions of the Bible but also contains some of the most famous and beautiful prose in the English language. Illustrated with 65 plates and maps complete. Two of the maps are double-page. Finely bound near contemporary full dark blue hard grain morocco decorative gilt border enclosing inner gilt rules and gilt corner crowns all enclosing a decorative gilt floral frame spine gilt in compartments and gilt lettered direct inner turn-ins with double gilt rules all edges gilt. A superb binding in truly remarkable condition. Some foxing internally to a few quires overall internally very clean. With a long inscription on the front fly of volume 1 by the 1st Marquess Wellesley 1760-1842 Governor General of Bengal Lord Lieutenant of Ireland and brother of the Duke of Wellington: "To Mr. Thomas Rich. The Gift of His affectionate attached and Grateful Friend. Remember the first words you read in This Bible !!! Meditate upon these things Give thyself wholly to them that thy profiting may appear To All'". Signed Wellesley and dated Kingston House Knightsbridge London 27th February 1842. The three volumes weigh just over 28lbs.Interestingly Wellesley is through his eldest daughter Lady Charles Bentinck a great great great grandfather of Queen Elizabeth II; his portrait hangs in the throne room of Buckingham Palace.
