Tall 8vo. 25.5 cm; 9.5". 2 ff. pp. 609–843. <br><br>The title-page tells us this was translated "by the Calcutta Baptist missionaries with native assistants" and that it was translated from the Hebrew. The lead translator was William Yates 1792–1845 a Baptist missionary who was first stationed at Serampore where he studied under William Carey and afterwards resided and worked at Calcutta. The text is present in Bengali character in double-column format.<br>    This is clearly an off-printing with a special title-page of the prophetical books from the 1844 Calcutta printing of the O.T. in Bengali. Only Oxford University reports owning a copy. <br>    <br>    Not in Darlow & Moule; not list in North & Nida Book of a Thousand Tongues 1972. Publisher's dark blue cloth paper spine label. Lower edges of boards abraded to the underlying boards. Paper shelving label at base of spine. Evidence of removal of bookplates. No stamps. Scattered foxing. A very good copy. The Psalms were translated and paraphrased under the supervision of the Franconia Mennonite Conference for the use of eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites. Music is present in the first portion though the bulk of the volume is of words. => It's an engaging fact that psalms are given in multiple versions; there are four of the 23d.<br>    Arndt and Eck cite Bender who says "This first American Mennonite Hymnbook is => not to be confused with one of similar title printed by Saur at Germantown in 1753 called erroneously by Seidensticker and Flory a Mennonite hymnbook." Each portion of this item has a separate title-page with the second section's title-page reading Sammlung altre und neuer Geistreichen Gesänge. The woodcut frontispiece depicts David playing his harp. <br>    <br>    Arndt & Eck 2419; Shoemaker 2239. Contemporary calf rebacked some time ago spine with gilt-stamped leather title and publication labels; rubbed with leather open across joints but volume still quite firm; original clasps now lacking. Front fly-leaves with early inked and pencilled inscriptions. Final leaf pp. 21/22 of the 22-page appendix of brief hymn texts not of the main portion of the work lacking. Edge nicks chips and tears some extending into text; three leaves torn in half from outer margin without loss of text; two leaves one index with lower outer corner torn away with loss of a few words; last two leaves with outer edges ragged. ‎Paris: British & Foreign Bible Society at the Imprimérie Royale 1827. First Edition of the complete Bible in Ottoman Turkish the chief language of European and Asiatic Turkey and the official language of the Turkish Empire. The translation was undertaken in the 17th century by Wojciech Bobowski a Polish convert to Islam known as Ali Bey chief translator to Sultan Muhammad IV at the instigation of Levin Warner then Dutch Ambassador at Constantinople. It is apparently based upon a French protestant version. The New Testament from his manuscript held by Leyden University was edited by Heinrich Friedrich Diez former Russian Ambassador at Constantinople and further revised and edited by French Oriental scholar Jean Daniel Kieffer 1767-1832 before being printed in Paris in 1819. In 1820 Kieffer became the first Agent of the British and Foreign Bible Society in France and in the same year began a thorough revision of Ali Bey's translation of the Old and New Testaments. The complete Bible without the Apocrypha was published in 1827 in an edition of 5000 copies together with a further 2000 copies of the New Testament on its own. ‎Valencia: Fundacion Biblia Espanola 1876 . A fine facsimile of the Complutensian Polyglot named after the place of its publication Alcalá de Henares "Complutum" in Latin. It was the first polyglot Bible and one of the finest monuments of printing. The original was printed from 1514-17 though overall publication of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible was delayed while work on the Old Testament continued to allow both the Old and New Testaments to be published together as a complete work in 1520 though apparently the volumes were not circulated until 1522. See Darlow and Moule 1411 for the whole story. The print-run consisted of 600 copies on paper and six on vellum of which only 150 are known to survive. In America OCLC locates copies at Princeton Indiana and Marquette; in addition several libraries own a volume or two. Full light brown leather with covers decoratively stamped in blind and spines in gilt. . Six volumes folio being a complete facsimile of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible first published in Alcala in 1514-17. .
