Occasional light brownspotting. 4 480 IV 426 pp 1 f. advertisements. � First edition of the seminal "Black Book" also known as "Bible of the Reformers" together with the very rare compendium also known as volume II which is almost never present. <br><br>The aim of the "Black Book" written and published in the midst of the political Reform-struggle was to investigate and expose the Government as well as its main supporters namely the five corporations: the Church the Agriculturists the Boroughs the East-India Company and the Bank. As such it played an enormous r�le in the constitutional struggle that England was undergoing at the time and in the struggle for both monarchy and democracy to survive. <br><br>"At the turn of the eighteenth century both houses of Parliament were largely composed of aristocrats and landowners. The growth of industry vastly accelerated by the needs of the Napoleonic wars had shaken the traditional agrarian communities and with them the old structure of class dependence. When the war was over the financial burden it left coupled with the government's attempts to re-establish the old system by the introduction of restrictive measures designed to protect the agricultural classes by increasing the price of food caused widespread unemployment. Near-starving factory workmen - the Luddites - wandered about the country smashing the machinery which they wrongly regarded as the immediate cause of their misfortunes. <br>The government still remained blind to the real causes of discontent� in 1819 an armed clash came. A vast Reform meeting was held in Manchester; troops were ordered to disperse it and arrest the agitators; six people were killed and many injured. The "Manchester Massacre" gave a great impetus to the Reform movement. The government met it with the "Six Acts" for its further repression. The country seemed poised on the brink of revolution.<br>The root of the matter lay in the unequal electorial representation in Paliament. Densely populated industrial areas remained without representation while the "rotten boroughs" returned one or more members representing a minute electorate. Disinterested members of both parties had been pressing for Reform since the eighteenth century but it was not until 1821 that the Whig party in opposition began the concerted drive which resulted in the passing of the Reform Bill of 1832�<br>The long struggle was conducted through a mass of printed matter which the press just beginning its own industrial revolution strove to provide. The "Bible of the Reformers" was the "Black Book" a massive compendium of all the abuses electoral ecclesiastical legal which they sought to abolish. It was first published in 1820 and passed through edition after edition continually augmented with new arguments new reports of abuses and new statistics."
