Engraved title-page plus 32 “606” = 604; 16 146 50; 55 1 pp.First edition of by far the best edition of the Syriac New Testament published before the 19th-century edited by Aegidius Gutbier which remained the standard Syriac text until Samuel Lee's 1823 edition. For the first book the gospel of Matthew it includes Gutbier's Latin translation of the Syriac at the foot of the page. With the New Testament are two complementary works by Gutbier produced in matching format and intended to accompany it: his Syriac lexicon giving the Syriac words with their Latin equivalents followed by an index of the Latin words; and his extensive notes on the Syriac text of the New Testament with alternative readings from the many sources he examined. The New Testament relates stories that would have first been told and in some cases probably also written down in Aramaic the vernacular language of Palestine in Jesus's time. Syriac another dialect of Aramaic served as the vernacular language of much of the Middle East. The Syriac text therefore provides valuable clues to the Aramaic sources of the New Testament. With a 1691 Amsterdam purchase inscription and two 1859 owner's inscriptions. In good condition with the lower right corner of the engraved title-page under-inked the paper slightly browned and an occasional minor spot or small stain. Binding with some of the vellum tapes broken at the hinge some cracks in the hinges and with the back of the bookblock reinforced but still generally good. Three complementary books forming the most important reference work for 17th- and 18th-century Syriac studies.l Darlow & Moule 8966; VD17 39:142375F 3:316277C 75:689489C. hardcover
250 2 blank pp.Eighth edition of the New Testament in Maori and a slightly corrected edition of the controversial revision of 1887. The first serious edition of the New Testament in Maori translation had appeared in 1837. Subsequent editions followed until a large revision was made in the fifth edition of 1852. By 1884 it was felt that a new revision should be made to correct the numerous misprints and incorrect translations. The resulting edition appeared in 1887 and is considered "the finest Maori book of the 19th century" Lineham but was highly unpopular with its intended audience because for most of the Maori the older Bible text had a spiritual status and memorization of the Bible was highly respected. Despite the objections a new edition appeared in 1894 and together with the 1887-edition this is considered to be one of the "greatest Maori publications of the 19th century" Lineham. The publication of this eighth edition was overseen by the same scholars who had prepared the 1887-edition. The text was supplied by William Leonard Williams future bishop of Waiapu and an eminent scholar of Maori who also corrected the proofs as far as signature H. The remainder of the text was corrected by Robert Maunsell a missionary and authority on the Maori language. With a library stamp and an owner's inscription on the front endpaper. Some pages near the endpapers slightly foxed otherwise in very good condition.l Darlow & Moule 6657; Williams 876; cf. 200 ll.First polyglot edition of any part of the Bible and the first significant polyglot work ever published: a psalter in Hebrew Greek Arabic Chaldean Aramaic and Latin and a pioneering work of both biblical scholarship and book production. It is of the utmost importance in several further respects: the second book printed in Arabic from movable type following Gregorio de Gregorii's Kitab salat as-sawa'i a book of hours for the Lebanese Melchites printed in 1514 and the earliest Arabic printing of any portion of the Bible. It also contains the first edition of the Aramaic text of the Psalter and offers for the first time Kabbalistic texts from the Zohar. Furthermore Giustiniani's commentary provides the first substantial biographical reference to Columbus making it an important Americanum. With a contemporary owner's inscription and marginal and interlinear manuscript notes. With water stains mostly confined to quires A E and F and an occasional leaf slightly browned. Binding rebacked as noted and carefully restored with the edges and corners repaired. A pioneering work of biblical scholarship Arabic printing and the study of Christopher Columbus.l Alden & Landis 516/4; Darlow & Moule 1411 1634 & 2401; Sabin 66468; Smitskamp Philologia Orientalia 236. unknown
3 ll. 852; 234 pp.Very rare re-issue of the scarce States Translation of the Old and New Testament and also the psalmbook published at Utrecht by 'de Compagnie' booksellers in 1741. Unlike the first issue the Bible is here enlarged with a series of 42 unsigned engraved plates from an unidentified source all with 3- or 4-line captions apparently not the series after the illustrations of Jan Luyken also used by the same publisher. With only the undated engraved general title-page and no separate title-page for the Old Testament but with separate title-pages for the New Testament and the psalms. With only a few minor spots. Binding also in very good condition spine slightly worn. In very good condition.l Not in: Darlow & Moule; NCC; STCN; WorldCat; cf. 20 302; 2 134 12 164 2 66 ll.Beautifully illustrated large folio Dutch States Bible Statenbijbel with 6 six maps including a world map and a complete set of the striking illustrations drawn and engraved by Bernard Picart and others. The maps belong to the larger of two series by Daniël Stoopendaal and were explicitly made for the Keur Bibles with for example Bible scenes rather than figures from classical mythology decorating the world map. With the armorial bookplate of Hendrik Gerardsz. van Couwenhoven 1711-1792 and a short handwritten genealogy of Couwenhoven's family from Couwenhoven's marriage in 1738 to the birth of this last child in 1766. The binding appears to date from the middle quarters of the 18th century so it may have been bound and presented for the occasion of the 1738 wedding. In very good condition. The binding is slightly worn at the joints the headcap of volume 1 is damaged and there are a few other minor surface imperfections but it remains generally in very good condition.l Darlow & Moule 3337; for the maps: Poortman & Augusteijn pp. 196-203; for the prints: Poortman Bijbel en prent II pp. 140-145. unknown
380 19 1 blank pp.Plantin's lovely little miniature edition of the New Testament in the ancient Syriac language probably published in this pocket-sized format for the convenience of students and other scholars. Plantin's son-in-law Franciscus Raphelengius who had begun to establish his reputation as an orientalist when he helped prepare the Polyglot added an appendix to this edition giving unpublished variant readings from an important Cologne manuscript. In very good condition.
