Riker printed several variations on this edition from 1831 onwards; in this case the added engraved title-page still gives the publication date as 1831 but the main title shows 1841. The text is printed in double columns with a central column of references and => illustrated with a frontispiece an additional engraved title-page wood-engraved headpieces and four steel-engraved plates the latter done by Illman and Pilbrow after various artists.<br> Provenance: Tipped-in leaf with inked inscription: "Hannah M. Williams / Presented by directive from her grandmother Williams when on her death bed with this injunction to be read with careful attention"; in pencil below is "A precious legacy." Williams or a contemporary apparently took the directive seriously; there are several instances of pencilled bracketing marks of emphasis and marginalia in the "precious legacy" hand.<br> Binding: Contemporary diced-grain red sheep covers framed in gilt roll surrounding gilt-stamped acanthus and acorn design spine with gilt-stamped title "Polyglott Testament" and decorative motifs board edges with gilt roll. All edges gilt. <br> <br> See Hills English Bible in America 768 for 1831 ed.; 1841 not listed. Bound as above rubbed at joints and extremities with front hinge inside cracked yet sound. To avoid controversy and to appeal to Catholics a translation approved for use in the Catholic Church was employed. This resulted in some criticism from the ABS's Protestant base but proved a successful strategy to get the Scriptures into the hands of Spanish speakers in the newly independent nations south of the U.S. <br> <br> Darlow & Moule 8495; Shoemaker 11841; not in O'Callaghan; not in O'Callaghan Supplement. Contemporary sheep spine with gilt rules and tiny remnant of black leather title label; some rubbing and abrasions spine leather with fine cracks. Waterstaining sometimes nearly invisible other times noticeable; scattered foxing and browning throughout. => A solid sound copy of a text that was a bit of a landmark for the ABS. There are different issues: This a copy of the one with the third word of the Greek title readiing "Diathche" and not "Diathke" and with the printer's device showing the man holding the sun in his left hand. Thus this is Darlow and Moule issue "B." => Thomas Jefferson owned a copy of one of the issues of this edition.<br> Provenance: Manuscript ownership inscription of John Ray dated 1716 on retained fly-leaf; ownership signature of Robert L. Wilson New York 1818 on title-page; gilt supra-libros of Barzillai Slosson dated 1829. Later in the Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released.<br> Binding: American binding of dark blue goat richly gilt with wide floral border on covers and spine distinctively gilt using rules and floral roll. Unsigned.<br> Barzillai Slosson may have been related to the lawyer of the same name who was active in Kent CT at the end of the 18th century and into the fourth decade of the 19th whose account books are in the Yale Law Library; perhaps the Barzillai who graduated from Columbia College in 1818 and later moved to Geneva NY where he was active and successful in business and civic affairs. <br> <br> Wing rev. ed. A scholar from the Westphalia region of Germany K�ster 1670�1716 specialized in paleography and Greek; this printing includes his preface and Prolegomena and extensive commentary in Latin below the main text. Using twelve new manuscripts in his research K�ster significantly added to Mill's 1645�1707 collation.<br> The title-page printed in red and black features an => engraved vignette of the Virgin Mary enthroned above the Earth flanked by an eagle a lion a bull and an angel representing the Four Evangelists and there are => five additional large illustrative engraved vignettes functioning as headpieces in the text. Printed double-column and divided in the middle of each page by a paragraph of citations the text is dotted by a variety of woodcut floriated and historiated initials and factotum Greek capitals.<br> Provenance: Front pastedown with pencilled inscription "C.B.P.B. 1709" and with bookplate of Newton Theological Institution properly deaccessioned noting gift from library of Edward Cushing Mitchell D.D. class of 1853. <br> <br> Darlow & Moule 4735. Contemporary mottled sheep rebacked some time ago; scuffed and worn front joint starting from head and foot extremities rubbed and chipped. Offsetting to margins of first and last few leaves; waterstaining to inner portions of first 80 and a few final pages touching but not obscuring text on some pages and a small area of the first headpiece. One proud corner folded over several other corners bumped; scattered spots of light staining and ink smears not obscuring sense; occasional small edge nick. Antwerp: By Daniel Vervliet 1600. Small 4to 21 cm; 8.25". 18 ff. 745 1 pp. 13 ff. <br><br>The second edition of the Roman Catholic new Testament in English. The translation is the work of a number of English Catholic priests but principally of Gregory Martin who fled to France in 1568 because of persecution in their native land and under the direction of Dr. later Cardinal William Allen founded the English College at Douai. The college moved for a short time to Rheims but subsequently returned as the title-page here attests.<br> The first edition of this translation was issued at Rheims in 1582 in over-sanguine hopes that its sale would be successful enough to underwrite the cost of a prompt production of the Old Testament. The two-volume O.T. did not appear however until 1609/1610.<br> The second edition of the Rheims N.T. is a revision of the first not merely a reprinting of it and contains a "Table of Heretical Corruptions" not found in the 1582 printing and a new preface. Late 17th- early 18th-century English calf with concentric blind panels on covers in contrasting tones of brown and tan all edges deep red; covers with scrapes and bumps rebacked with hinges inside strengthened new endpapers with 1906 owner's inscription on front free one. Title-page dust-soiled and torn in upper margin with some loss of decorative border page skillfully remargined with blank paper. Some foxing and age-soiling in early leaves; this similarly at rear starting around p. 640 and most notable in Tables with also some dust-soiling and with light waterstaining across a good number of upper outer corners. Folio extra 37 cm; 14.5". 4 ff. 1098 pp. lacks final leaf with colophon. <br><br>Thought to have been edited by Franciscus Junius or Friedrich Sylburg this complete Greek Bible is based on the Basel edition of 1545 with corrections from the Complutensian and other texts including for the New Testament that of Robert Estienne. The woodcut printer's device appears on the title-page. The main text is printed in double-column format with some handsome woodcut initials and headpieces. The chapters and verses are numbered. <br> <br> Adams B979; Darlow & Moule 4653; VD16 B2578. 18th-century English calf binding in the Cambridge style worn. Both boards with loss of leather and roughly replaced. Front board detached in past and resecured with a linen hinge inside and a leather spine repair; hinge at rear with same strenthening. Early leaves crumpled some later ones as well. A few leaves have irregular fore-margins. Title-page stained and with old library stamp and shelving label; reverse of same with rubber stamp. Noted for its excellent illustrations by several contemporary American engravers including Alexander Anderson Cornelius Tiebout Francis Shallus and William Rollinson this large and handsomely produced lectern-sized folio Bible is printed in two columns with sidenotes including scriptural cross-references and a chronology. The plates include scenes of Adam and Eve in paradise frontispiece the Egyptian midwives drowning the Hebrews' infant sons Judas Maccabaeus slaying Apolloninus and Judas betraying Christ with a kiss; the maps show the presumed historical setting of the Garden of Eden and the Holy Land. One plate in this copy "The Parting of Lot and Abraham" is bound in upside-down.<br> Provenance: Title-page with inked inscription in upper margin: "Benjamin Morris to Samuel White Sept. 17th 1826" and with tipped-in typed slip noting presentation to a seminary by the Rev. John Cyrus Madden class of 1893 who had received the book from Charles Reifschneider a descendant of White. Spine head chipped with one label partly cut yes cut away and foot with inked shelving number; other library markings including bookplate pressure- and rubber-stamps and a few typical annotations. Pages age-toned to browned with offsetting and foxing ranging from mild to moderate occasional spotting and smudging some dog-eared corners;some leaves with margins chipped or short edge tears a few with tears extending into text some with loss of a few letters. Two leaves in Jeremiah torn with upper portions lacking one leaf crudely repaired some time ago last leaf tattered; two final leaves last portion of tables section and the subscribers list lacking with scraps of the "Table of Kindred & Affinity" laid in. => Marked by time and use still an agreeable and interesting example of a noteworthy edition.
