A truly => unique copy this particular volume is thickly interleaved with variously sized sheets and tabs containing the fastidious manuscript notes of published author => Walter Robert Betteridge D.D. 1863�1916 a notable faculty member in the Old Testament Department of the Rochester Theological Seminary who swathed page after page in minute inked marginalia and added yet more bulk with clippings from related texts � annotated of course.<br> Among the doctor's publications was an article on "The Accuracy of the Authorized Version of the Old Testament" 1911 including the Hebrew psalms.<br> Provenance: Donated by Mrs. Betteridge to the seminary library with institutional bookplate noting this on rear pastedown. Variously given as Chahta Chactas Chato Tchakta Chocktaw or Chactaw Choctaw is a language of the Muskogean family spoken by Native Americans who originally lived in parts of Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana before being relocated to Oklahoma. This translation was done by two Presbyterian missionaries the Revs. Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington; the Book of a Thousand Tongues says that they were "substantially assisted by Joseph Dukes and W.H. McKinney educated Choctaws."<br> The Rev. Wright 1788�1853 spent over 30 years among the Choctaw people in Mississippi and Oklahoma. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br> Campbell's translation of the Gospels were first printed in the U.S. in 1796 and was the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America. This is only the second edition printed in America. <br> <br> ESTC W4382; Evans 35200; Hills English Bible in America 71. On Campbell see: The Dictionary of National Biography. Crown 8vo. xv 254 pp. <br><br>The Brigham Young Library catalogue quotes the Jewish Encyclopedia as calling this "a translation of the rabbinical Book of Yashar compiled from the Babylonian Talmud and other Jewish sources and intermixed with Arabic legends and passages of the Bible. Three fourths of the book is devoted to the pre-Mosaic period one fifth to the Mosaic period and only three pages to later history. The original edition appeared in Naples in 1552. A Latin version by Johann G. Abicht appeared in Leipzig 1732 with title: Dissertatio de libro recti. in 1750 the London printer Thomas Ilive issued an English translation of the work asserting that he had published the real 'Book of Yashar' mentioned in the Bible."<br> First published in the U.S. in 1840 by M. M. Noah; this has => significance for Rosicrucians and Masons. Publisher's black cloth stamped in blind on covers and front cover lettered in gilt. Some bubbling of cloth on back cover. The Psalms were translated and paraphrased under the supervision of the Franconia Mennonite Conference for the use of eastern Pennsylvania Mennonites. Music is present in the first portion though the bulk of the volume is of words. => It's an engaging fact that psalms are given in multiple versions; there are four of the 23d.<br> Arndt and Eck cite Bender who says "This first American Mennonite Hymnbook is => not to be confused with one of similar title printed by Saur at Germantown in 1753 called erroneously by Seidensticker and Flory a Mennonite hymnbook." Each portion of this item has a separate title-page with the second section's title-page reading Sammlung altre und neuer Geistreichen Ges�nge. The woodcut frontispiece depicts David playing his harp. <br> <br> Arndt & Eck 2419; Shoemaker 2239. Contemporary calf rebacked some time ago spine with gilt-stamped leather title and publication labels; rubbed with leather open across joints but volume still quite firm; original clasps now lacking. Front fly-leaves with early inked and pencilled inscriptions. Final leaf pp. 21/22 of the 22-page appendix of brief hymn texts not of the main portion of the work lacking. Edge nicks chips and tears some extending into text; three leaves torn in half from outer margin without loss of text; two leaves one index with lower outer corner torn away with loss of a few words; last two leaves with outer edges ragged. Anderson James Cooper Messrs. Dalziel W.T. Green William Linton and many others all of whom labored mightily in this attempt to reproduce the feel of a 16th-century production.<br> Binding: Signed reddish-brown morocco binding by Root & Son with covers and spine gilt extra; extremely wide and handsome turn-ins elaborately gilt tooled.<br> Provenance: Front fly-leaf with attractively inked gift inscription to the Rev. Frontis. 768 pp.; 10 plts. <br><br>One of the Phinneys' series of stereotyped quarto Bibles of which 138 editions were published between August 1822 and winter 1848. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop � for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York.<br> The New Testament here has a separate title-page and the volume is llustrated with 10 wood engraved plates including two frontispieces. <br> <br> Hills English Bible in America 972. Contemporary sheep gilt-lettered on the spine. Binding rubbed with abrasions along edges and joints spine pulled at head. Ex-library with white-lettered shelf number on spine. Light foxing. The illustrations are after Italian old masters such as Andrea del Sarto Fra Angelico Titian Raphael Leonardo Perugino and the like and the engravers were such notables as R.C. West J. Cooper W. For while being additionally the uncommon first printing in America of the Gospels in English in any translation other than the King James or the Douai-Rheims version this is also the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America.<br> George Campbell 1719�96 was a minister of the Church of Scotland theologian and principal of Marischal College. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br> Provenance: Title-page and contents leaf with early inked inscriptions reading "Jas. The Phinney brothers Henry and Elihu carried on the business their father Elihu Phinney had started in 1795; the elder Phinney had established a press bookshop and newspaper after resettling in Cooperstown from Connecticut. James Fenimore Cooper a delegate to the 1816 convention that formed the American Bible Society learned to set type in his shop � for fun Hills 69. The younger Phinneys however were not to be restricted to one shop: They sold their stock which consisted of their own publications together with books brought in from Philadelphia and New York from large travelling wagons and established a "bookboat" on the Erie Canal that enabled them to reach a larger portion of western New York.<br> This edition has the Apocrypha added and 11 woodcut plates in total; the New Testament has a separate title-page. The family record leaves here are mostly unused but bear a few names with dates from 1845 through 1899.<br> Provenance: Front pastedown with small bookplate of 20th-century collector Michael Zinman. <br> <br> Hills English Bible in America 1100.
