Peter Pauper Press's exquisite oversize about 7.75 wide by 12 inches tall Four Gospels book containing the text of the King James Version of the four gospels illustrated with numerous woodcuts by Alexander Mueller. This edition was limited to 985 copies of which this is number 664 and it is signed by the illustrator. The book is magnificently produced as might be indicated by the list given at the end of the book of six patrons and nearly 400 subscribers including both individuals and organizations such as Dartmouth College Library The New York Public Library University of North Carolina Library University of Oregon Library and Massachusetts Bible Society. The book presents the gospels in a "reader's" format with large chapter headings but with paragraph symbols instead of numbered verses.<br /><br />As the photos show the slipcase is in good condition but is beginning to tear at the corners where the book is inserted and removed. It also has faint residue from a small price sticker to the upper right of the label. This isn't ordinarily noticeable visibly it is faint enough that it doesn't show up in the photos but can be felt slightly when running one's finger over the small spot there.<br /><br />The spine of the book shows considerable rubbing as is common for this book by this point in time but is still legible as can be seen from the photos. Inside the book appears unread. There are no markings or bookplates and the pages and binding feel almost new which is remarkable considering the age of this book. There is no copyright date given but the illustrator passed away in 1963.<br /><br />Aside from the slipcase and the rubbing on the spine this book appears as new.<br /><br /><i>About Silver Oak Books: I am a professor with a great love of reading and I have a large collection of academic and rare/fine print books.
