Later tree calf in a contemporary style spine with raised bands and "Biblia Sacra" in gilt; very narrow strip cut away from top of title page affecting manuscript ownership signature. Lacking the final two parts as well as the separate title pages for the second through fourth individual parts. Contemporary annotations. First edition of the first complete Latin Bible printed in England one of five imprints of the 1580 edition. The Latin translation from the Hebrew and Syriac was the work of Immanuel Tremellius 1510-1580 an Italian Jewish convert first to Catholicism then to Protenstantism. In 1547 he was invited to England by Thomas Cranmer 1489-1556 the Archbishop of Canterbury. In 1549 he succeeded Paul Fagius as Regius professor of Hebrew at Cambridge. He was assisted by Franciscus Junius the Elder 1545-1602 his son-in-law. Tremellius' translation first appeared in 1569 in Geneva and portions relating to the Old Testament were published at Franfurt between 1575 and 1579. He here improved on the work of Thomas Berthelet's 1535 partial printing of the Vulgate to such an extent that he ultimately exerted considerable influence in England and on the Continent "Although his version was far from faultless it evinced very thorough scholarship and for long both in England and on the continent was adopted by the reformers as the most accurate Latin rendering. Front and back covers have darkened while spine has quite a bit of lighter brown leather showing with the rest brown. Gold lettering showing 'Holy Bible' still nice. Top of spine has a one inch by one inch piece missing showing the gauze type material underneath. Front cover completely separated from text. Rear cover still attached from top to bottom. Since the covers are a bit larger than the text the rear cover has some small bits worn off the edge. Part of the leather on the lower spine needs to be reglued. Text is still clean/tight. Black endpapers front and rear. Pre-title page has printed name of H. Fellows crossed out and an inked signature of a new owner is unreadable. This is the onlypage that is separatine. Bible is printed in Bourgeois Ref. Octavio lettering. Covers and text have rounded corners from bindery. Outside text has gilt edges. Marginal numbers and info on each page. Text is double-columned. Old Testament has 876 pages New Testament has 271 pages. There is one page that has A Table Of Time A Table Of Weights A Table Of Measures. Then there are unused Family Record pages for births and deaths then 8 glossy pages with a colored map on only the frontside of each. The New Testament of Jesus Christ translated faithfully into English
Rhemes: John Fogny 1582. FIRST EDITION. Complete with errata and tables. Decorative and historiated woodcut initials head- and tailpieces throughout. Contemporary calf rebacked red morocco spine label; corners worn insignificant worming some minor intermittent discoloration but generally in excellent condition. Contemporary annotations in English and Latin. First edition complete of the first Roman Catholic New Testament in English. A lengthy prologue addresses moral and practical concerns a reader might have in regards to a translation of holy scripture. The authors claim to have produced the most authentic interpretation of the Vulgate Latin with close attention paid to the Greek text. The impetus behind translating the Bible into a vernacular tongue was not to simply claim a scholarly triumph but to make the word of God accessible to lay-people and combat heretical and "impious translation put forth by sundry sectes" ie. Lutherans and Protestants. This translation is the work of several English priests including Thomas Worthington 1549-1627 Richard Bristowe 1538-1581�John�Reynolds or Rainolds 1549-1607 and William Allen 1532-1594 and lead principally by Gregory Martin c. 1542-1582. A brilliant young scholar Martin studied at Oxford and taught in Dublin before taking the post as tutor to the sons of Thomas Howard fourth duke of Norfolk. After Norfolk's imprisonment Martin left for France where he could practice his Catholicism freely. Before his confirmation to the priesthood in 1573 Martin studied with Dr. later Cardinal William Allen founder of the English Roman Catholic College at the University of Douai. It was Allen who prompted a New Testament translation to combat the threat of Protestantism. Plans were made to produce an Old Testament but due to a shortage of funds that text was not published until 1609-10. John Fogny unknown

Title continued: "An Alphabetical Table of All the Names in the Old and New Testaments With Their Significations; Tables of Scripture Weights Measures and Coins &c." Stereotype Edition. 4 6 5-570 111 p.: frontispiece; 29 cm. Contemporary full calf. The frontispiece is a wood engraving by Alexander Anderson of Moses found in the bulrushes. No date of publication. The publisher's address is given as 188 N. 3rd St. Griffith & Simon published from 1841 to 1849 and are known to have used this address in 1842. By 1846 they were using 144 N. 3rd St. suggesting that this was published between 1841 and 1845. A very scarce albeit incomplete Bible from the first half of the 19th century by a lesser known Philadelphia publisher. In Poor Condition: both boards are detached and leather over spine is lacking; everything after the Apocrypha that is the entire New Testament is lacking remaining text block is solid; foxing throughout. <br/><br/> Griffith & Simon hardcover
