‎Bible in English.‎

‎The Holy Bible containing the Old Testament and the New.‎

‎Cambridge: John Baskerville 1763. Very Good/Printing a grand bible had been Baskerville's cherished ambition but the royal privilege belonged exclusively to Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Consequently Baskerville applied and was elected printer to the University of Cambridge. An innovator a micromanager a workaholic and an exacting perfectionist he threw everything into the bible project. He invented a stiffer blacker ink for it designed the types and the page layout and demanded smoother paper than was generally available. Ultimately he emptied his own bank accounts and borrowed money when the support of subscribers failed. Indeed he was not able to sell the entire edition of 1250 copies and ended up remaindering more than a third of the press run for pence on the guinea to his enormous personal disappointment and financial pain. The book remains a landmark in the history of English printing "one of the most beautiful books printed in the world" according to the bibliographer Frognall Dibdin a sentiment frequently echoed in Great Britain. This copy with the third longest list of subscribers ending with York. . Imperial folio 50 cm; 573 leaves. Text in double columns. In straight-grain blue morocco with gold-tooled border. Rebacked with original gold-tooled spine laid down. All edges gilt. Later reinforcements to joints and hinges. Light foxing on first and last leaves. Old bookplate on pastedown. Extra shipping charges will apply. References: Gaskell "John Baskerville a Bibliography" 26; Rothschild 2640; Darlow & Moule 857. John Baskerville unknown books‎

‎Bible Facsimile in Hebrew. Joseph Ibn Hayyim; Bezalel Narkiss; Aliza Cohen Mushlin.‎

‎The Kennicott Bible.‎

‎London: Facsimile Editions 1985. Edition limited to 500 copies. Very Good/Fine facsimile of "Ms Kennicotti" held in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University a finely decorated manuscript of the Hebrew Bible that resembles in some ways the Book of Kells in the use of animal figures and and intricate marginal decorations although the style comes from the Ibero-Islamic tradition rather than the Celtic one. The manuscript was copied out twenty years prior to the expulsion of Jews from Spain in 1492 by Moshe Ibn Zabara and Yosef Ibn Chaim containing the entire Tanak together with the Radak commentary and Sefer HaMichlol. It is known as the "Kennicott Bible" after Benjamin Kennicot 1718-1783 the English clergyman and Hebraist who acquired the manuscript for Oxford University. An exceptionally beautiful facsimile five and a half years in the making it is printed on deluxe paper stock intended to reproduce the appearance of the original vellum. The gold highlights in the facsimile illustrations were applied by hand. The commentary by Bezalel Narkiss and Aliza Cohen-Mushlin provides a scholarly yet approachable historical context and artistic appreciation. Recto has romans 13:11 - 14:14 "brotherly love & gentiles called" verso of the leaf has romans 14:15 - 15:19 "the weake brethren & god the judge" Leaf measures 10 3/8" x 7" 262mm x 177mm printed on old cotton linen paper also called rag paper. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English preceding the King James Version by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th-century English Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare and Oliver Cromwell. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Bible is significant because for the very first time a mechanically printed mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public which came with a variety of scriptural study guides and aids collectively called an apparatus which included verse citations that allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible introductions to each book of the Bible that acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover maps tables woodcut illustrations and indices. The annotations which are an important part of the Geneva Bible were Calvinist and Puritan in character and as such they were disliked by the ruling pro-government Anglicans of the Church of England as well as King James I who commissioned the "Authorized Version" or King James Bible in order to replace it. Surprisingly the Geneva notes were included in a few editions of the King James version even as late as 1715. unknown books‎

‎King James Bible Leaf First Edition‎

‎1611 King James Bible Leaf‎

‎Leaf from a First Edition 1611 King James Bible 4th issue 1634 59 line pulpit folio leave The Leaf is an authentic original rag cotton Leaf from the first edition of King James Bible. It is large folio size and measures 11" wide x 16-1/2" tall. There were five separate issues of the 1611 printing in total; 1611 1613 1617 1634 and 1640/39. When King James authorized this large pulpit folio to be printed Richard Barker did so by facilitating 5 separate printing presses working tirelessly for two years. By 1611 the pages of several thousand copies were printed and ready to be bound and issued to the churches of England. It is estimated that in 1611 roughly 300 Authorized Bibles were issued to the churches. The remainder of the printed pages were stored away until the next issue was decreed by the king of England. Over the next two years this Bible was read in the churches and small errors began to be discovered. The most famous of these misprints is Ruth 3:15. In 1611 this verse was printed as "he" went into the city when the correct translation should read "she" went into the city. Thus naming the first edition-first issue of the King James Bible in 1611 as the Great "He" Bible. As these misprints were discovered these specific leaves and only these leaves were re-printed and then bound with the other leaves originally printed in 1611. These were then issued at the next decree of the king. The next issue was in 1613. At this point several of the known misprints were corrected along with Ruth 3:15 being changed to "she" thus the second issue was named the Great "She" Bible in 1613. Over the course of the next 29 years there were five pulpit folios issued to the churches with the majority of the leaves being printed originally in 1611 and with each issue small errors were fixed and these pages were reprinted. In the 4th and 5th issues 1634 and 1640 the text layout stayed exactly the same but with a larger number of small changes made to the marginal notes which suggests a larger reprinting done in the latter years. Finally in 1640 the 5th and last issue was released concluding the legacy of the 1611 printed folios. These misprints corrections and small changes will clearly define the different issue dates of the 1611 King James Bible. unknown books‎

‎BIBLE NEW TESTAMENT‎

Bound in full late 19th century crushed dark blue morocco gilt extra a.e.g.; ex library with a stamp on the title and a few in the text generally a large clean copy.

The first Roman Catholic New Testament in English.

Very scarce first edition of the important Rheims New Testament the first Roman Catholic version in English translated from the Vulgate. Like the Geneva Bible the Rheims New Testament was "produced by religious refugees who carried their faith and work abroad. Since the English Protestants used their vernacular translations not only as the foundation of their own faith but as siege artillery in the assault on Rome a Catholic translation became more and more necessary in order that the faithful could answer text for text against the 'intolerable ignorance and importunity of the heretics of this time.' The chief translator was Gregory Martinc. 1542-1582 . Technical words were transliterated rather than translated. Thus many new words came to birth. Not only was Martin steeped in the Vulgate he was every day involved in the immortal liturgical Latin of his church. The resulting Latinisms added a majesty to his English prose and many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of the King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors 108. While Martin was responsible for the translation the controversial textual annotations in defense of Catholic doctrine are attributed to Richard Bristow one of the supervisors of the project; most copies of this edition were purportedly suppressed and destroyed because of these notes some of which were removed from later editions. The New Testament was issued separately and first in the hope that its successful sale would finance prompt production of the Old Testament; the two-volume Old Testament did not however appear until 1609-10 due to insufficient funds.

ESTC S102491; STC 2884; Darlow & Moule 134; The Bible 100 Landmarks 66; The Bible in the Lilly Library 39 40; Dore 291-98; Herbert 177 300; Pierpont Morgan Library The Bible 112115. While a contemporary lambasted Baskett for this and other typographical errors in the text calling it a "Baskett-ful of errors" Oxford historian of printing Harry Carter states that "only Baskerville's Bible is its equal among English Bibles for beauty of type impression and paper" The History of the Oxford University Press 1975 I p. 171 In 1709 John Baskett purchased the exclusive royal patent to print Bibles in England control of which his family retained until 1799. This magnificent edition of the Bible is among Baskett's most important works highly regarded for its large elegant type; its 60 striking copper-engraved vignette head- and tailpieces; and its many delicately engraved historiated initials. John Ryland and after serving an apprenticeship with William Otridge commenced business as a general bookseller on 19 April 1794 in the Strand where he remained until 1816. A few years before he left the rarity and consequent costliness of all 'Polyglot Bibles' gave him the idea of supplying a convenient and inexpensive edition. In 1816 Bagster brought out "The English version of the Polyglot Bible" with a preface by T. Chevalier in foolscap octavo size containing a selection of over 60000 parallel references mainly selected and all verified by himself. The book was extremely successful. The New Testament of Jesus Christ Translated Faithfully into English out of the authentical Latin according to the best corrected copies of the same diligently conferred with the Greeke and other editions in divers languages: With Arguments of bookes and chapters Annotations. and other necessarie helpes for the better understanding of the text and specially for the discoverie of the Corruptions of divers late translations and for cleering the Controversies in religion of these daies: In the English College of Rhemes. Rheims: Printed.by John Fogny 1582. First edition of the Roman Catholic version of the New Testament in English. Small quarto 8 5/16 x 6 inches; 210 x 154 mm. 28 745 27 pp. Title within border of type ornaments decorative and historiated woodcut initials. Bound in 19th-century brown calf. Boards and spine ruled and stamped in blind. Spine with red morocco spine label lettered in gilt. Board edges and dentelles stamped in blind. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Boards slightly rubbed. Four previous owner's bookplates on front pastedown. Front free endpaper with old ink notations quotation from Saint Augustine and small purple library stamp from the "Society of Jesus" in Milltown Park Ireland. The "Society of Jesus" is the Catholic group of which its members are the Jesuits. Title-page with cropped early annotation at top margin and same small "Society of Jesus" library stamp to lower corner. Some dampstaining and toning particularly to beginning. Some slight worming to fore-edge margin occasionally barely affecting text. Overall an excellent copy of the Rheims Bible. ìThe long title of The New Testament indicates at least in part the purpose which motivated William Allen and his small band of associates in the seminary of English Catholic refugees at Rheims. It was a losing battle for English Catholics merely to condemn the errors they claimed existed in other translations while declining to exhibit a translation which reflected their own critical principles. If the slow erosion of the Catholic faith in England was to be checked loyal Catholics would better withstand the taunts of Protestant Bible readers with the comfort and consolation drawn from a version of their own. As the title announces the translation was faithful to the Latin Vulgate but it also acknowledges careful comparison with the Greek. What the title does not specifically advertise is that Gregory Martin the chief translator borrowed freely from existing English versions. Close textual analysis has revealed many striking resemblances between the Rheims New Testament and Coverdaleís diglot of 1538. One new principle.was followed consistentlyótechnical words were transliterated in the text rather than translated the notes providing a clarification. Many of these words subsequently passed into the English language largely through the continuation of this practice by the revisers of the Authorized Version of 1611 who not only used these technical terms but also borrowed from Rheims many of its most felicitous and distinctive phrasesî In Remembrance of Creation 206. ìGregory Martin had originally translated the whole Bible into English but lack of funds permitted publication only of the New Testament in 1582. The long delay of twenty-seven years in completing the publication is underscored in the Preface of the Old Testament by reference to ëour poor estate in banishmentí In Remembrance of Creation 208. The annotations in the Old Testament are ascribed to Thomas Worthington who became President of the College at Douay in 1599. The ìApprobatioî is signed by three Professors at Douai. Minimal wear to extremities. Hinges neatly reinforced. A bright fresh copy throughout. Near fine. Martinís Biblical paintings are among the finest ever produced: ìThe spirit in which Martin worked is suggested by a passage in his catalogue for the large oil painting ëThe Fall of Ninevehí which he exhibited in lonely magnificence in 1827: ëThe mighty cities of Nineveh and Babylon have long since passed away. The accounts of their greatness and splendor may have been exaggerated. But where strict truth is not essential the mind is content to find delight in the contemplation of the grand and the marvelous. Into the solemn visions of antiquity we look without demanding the clear daylight of truth. Seen through the mist of ages the great becomes gigantic the wonderful swells into the sublimeíî Ray The Illustrator and the Book in England from 1790 to 1914 p. 44. ‎Bible. English. 1775. Authorized ie. King James Version. i. e.‎

‎The Holy Bible containing the Old and New Testaments; translated out of the original tongues and with the former translations diligently compared and revised.‎

‎Cambridge: Pr. by John Archdeacon 1775–76. 4to in 8s 28.8 cm 11.33". Frontis. 639 ff.

with accompanying volume The book of common prayer and administration of the sacraments and other rites and ceremonies of the Church according to the use of the Church of England: Together with the psalter or psalms of David. Cambridge: Pr. by John Archdeacon 1781. 8vo 20.7 cm 8.15". 376 ff. bound with Vickers William. A companion to the altar: Shewing the nature and necessity of a sacramental preparation in order to our worthy receiving the holy communion. London: Pr. for Thomas Beecroft 1783. Frontis. 2 v–55 1 adv. pp. lacking half-title or initial blank and with Bible. Psalms. English. Sternhold and Hopkins. The whole book of psalms collected into English metre. Cambridge: Pr. by John Archdeacon 1785. 8vo. 64 ff.
This striking 18th-century set — owned by a wealthy Englishwoman who spent much of her life in Switzerland for more on which see below — pairs a handsome Cambridge Bible and BCP in => masterfully designed and executed deluxe matched bindings. The Bible opens with a frontispiece engraved by Charles Grignion after Francis Hayman; the Apocrypha are present in this copy and the New Testament has a separate title-page dated 1776. The BCP is bound with Companion to the Altar "Note This Book is bound up with the Common-Prayers of several sorts printed by the University of Cambridge" as per the title-page; Sternhold & Hopkins bring up the rear.
Bindings: Contemporary mottled green morocco covers framed in Greek key roll and dentelles composed of urn and flower motifs surrounding central JHS medallions with red morocco inlays and gilt-tooled flames; spines with gilt-tooled compartment decorations Bible spine with gilt-stamped red leather title-label. While the covers of the two volumes are strongly similar overall and "read" as => identical on first glance the details of the design vary slightly between the Bible and the BCP as the size disparity — and possibly the time gap between the publication dates — necessitated the use of different tools. The spine designs differ more notably but still most companionably with the Bible's spine decorations being built up with foliate and floral motifs and the BCP's with suns and stars. => To engage in minute comparison of these bindings' detail is an entrancing exercise.
Provenance: Front free endpaper of Bible used for family record: Francis James Barwell de Sandol Roy born in 1793 and died in 1813 "Quel angoisse!"; Henri Guillaume de Sandol Roy born in 1797; and a list of grandchildren: François Sophie Anna and Alfred. The title-page inscription confirms that this set was owned by Sophie Bridget Barwell de Sandol Roy 1769–1850 daughter of William Barwell a director of the East India Company; her brother Richard became a famously wealthy and scandalous nabob. Dubbed "la belle Anglaise" following her arrival in Neuchâtel Sophie made a great splash in Swiss society and received a proposal from Colonel François Isaac de Sandol Roy sometimes given as Sandol-Roy — a proposal which she at first rejected until he subsequently saved her from the guillotine in revolutionary Paris! For more on their story please see Musée Neuchatelois 1923 ed. pp. 2–4 which includes a reproduction of a portrait of Sophie de Sandol-Roy done by Sir Joshua Reynolds.

Bible: Darlow & Moule 1247; ESTC T88808. BCP: Griffiths Bibliography of the Book of Common Prayer 1781:1; ESTC T212010. Companion: ESTC T76554. Psalms: ESTC T221010. Bindings as above moderate rubbing to extremities and sides with limited scuffing only; all edges gilt marbled endpapers and original matching dark blue bookmarks present still attached. Bible with small area of waterstaining to lower inner margins of first few leaves including frontispiece; varying faint to moderate foxing; one leaf with small repair to upper outer margin. BCP with a few instances of light foxing pages mostly clean; laid in is a stitched pamphlet which seems to be a record of additional family information involving Albert Victor and Mary although written in a challenging hand. => A gorgeous lavish production altogether with a remarkable arresting provenance.
