Melanchthon was a great supporter of Dolscius 152689 whose translation work was so proficient that at one point his authorial byline on the Greek translation of the Augsburg Confession was assumed to be merely a pseudonym for the great reformer himself.<br>Â Â Â Â The text here is simply printed with the Latin preface in roman and the main text in Greek using single columns; a 5-line decorative initial and a 7-line inhabited one showing two kings in profile complete the work. This is now an uncommon edition with searches of Worldcat COPAC USTC and NUC Pre-1956 revealing only three U.S. institutions reporting ownership.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: An inked ownership stamp of notable 19th-century English bibliomaniac Richard Heber 17741833 reading "Bibliotheca Heberiana" appears on the front free endpaper; Thomas Frognall Dibdin added this stamp to select rare books in Heber's collection following the collector's death. Gutbier 161767 a distinguished professor at Hamburg was universally recognized as one of the leading Orientalists of his era. His work on this New Testament was based on all of the previously published Syriac editions and on two unpublished manuscripts one of which had belonged to the emperor Constantine. Darlow and Moule note that Gutbier also includes the previously missing "five books the 'pericope de adulter' and the 'comma Johanneum.'"<br>Â Â Â Â This copy has the additional engraved title-page dated 1663 but is not one of the variant issues that include the supplementary pieces mentioned on that title. II Epistles Revelation. <br><br>An interleaved and heavily annotated copy of the Gospels and Acts of "Beza's third major edition of the Greek New Testament. The text follows that of the second major edition 1582 with only five exceptions" Darlow and Moule. => One should note that the title-page proclaims this "quarta editio" and that this is Estienne's third folio printing of Beza's N.T.<br>Â Â Â Â Beza's New Testament Greek text is here accompanied by his Latin and the Vulgate i.e. Catholic Latin translations the trio appearing in parallel columns on each page with => extensive notes that often fill as much as one-third to one-half of a page and with parallel references additionally set in the margins. The volume's title-page is printed in red and black and bears Henri Estienne's printer's device; a different finely wrought woodcut headpiece opens each book with each column on those pages bearing a woodcut initial at its head and a few of the books of the N.T. end with woodcut tailpieces.<br>Â Â Â Â Evidence of readership: An interleaved copy with => the vast majority of the leaves bearing an early 19th-century reader's notes and annotations. The notes cite references published as late as 1809 and it is clear that the natively German-speaking scholar was comfortable in Greek Hebrew Latin and English.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership signature on title-page of Leon St. Vincent. Later in The Howell Bible Collection Pacific School of Religion properly released; no markings.<br>Â Â Â Â The paper stock used for the interleaving has the classic ProPatria watermark and that and its countermark match Churchill's 151 which has a starting date of 1799. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Darlow & Moule 4650; Adams B1711. The New Testament first appeared at Rheims in 1582; at that time the Old Testament was said to be ready for printing but its actual publication was delayed until 1609 due to lack of funds. Frontis. engr. t.-p. 58 912 18 25 1 206 2 17 1 blank pp. <br><br>When the Jesuit scholars at Rheims succeeded in printing their Catholic translation of the New Testament into English first edition 1582 the event affected various English Protestant scholars in different ways: Some were offended or outraged others intrigued and yet others spurred to action. William Fulke of Pembroke College Cambridge was among those offended outraged and spurred: In 1589 he produced the first edition of his work attempting to refute the Rheims New Testament. His approach however which was to print the Rheims NT in parallel columns with the Bishops' NT the then accepted version of the Church of England supplying accompanying notes and explanations had unforeseen consequences.<br>Â Â Â Â As Darlow and Moule comment "by printing the Rheims Testament in full side by side with the Bishops' version Fulke secured for the former a publicity which it would not otherwise have obtained and was indirectly responsible for the marked influence which Rheims exerted on the Bible of 1611." Alan Thomas elaborates by observing that "many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors p. 108.<br>Â Â Â Â This is the fourth edition "wherein are many grosse absurdities corrected." A portrait of William Fulke precedes the engraved title-page both done by William Marshall. It published this the first stereotype Bible printed in the U.S. from plates imported from London; the B.F.B.S. contributed £500 towards the purchase of the plates and they were admitted to the U.S. free of import duties. The initial run produced 1050 copies of the complete Bible and 750 copies of the New Testament in double columns in very small type.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Signature of Edward H. Tall 8vo. 25.5 cm; 9.5". 2 ff. pp. 609843. <br><br>The title-page tells us this was translated "by the Calcutta Baptist missionaries with native assistants" and that it was translated from the Hebrew. The lead translator was William Yates 17921845 a Baptist missionary who was first stationed at Serampore where he studied under William Carey and afterwards resided and worked at Calcutta. The text is present in Bengali character in double-column format.<br>Â Â Â Â This is clearly an off-printing with a special title-page of the prophetical books from the 1844 Calcutta printing of the O.T. in Bengali. Only Oxford University reports owning a copy. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Not in Darlow & Moule; not list in North & Nida Book of a Thousand Tongues 1972. Publisher's dark blue cloth paper spine label. The text is printed in double columns with a central column of references and => illustrated with a frontispiece an additional engraved title-page wood-engraved headpieces and four steel-engraved plates the latter done by Illman and Pilbrow after various artists.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Tipped-in leaf with inked inscription: "Hannah M. Williams / Presented by directive from her grandmother Williams when on her death bed with this injunction to be read with careful attention"; in pencil below is "A precious legacy." Williams or a contemporary apparently took the directive seriously; there are several instances of pencilled bracketing marks of emphasis and marginalia in the "precious legacy" hand.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Contemporary diced-grain red sheep covers framed in gilt roll surrounding gilt-stamped acanthus and acorn design spine with gilt-stamped title "Polyglott Testament" and decorative motifs board edges with gilt roll. A scholar from the Westphalia region of Germany Küster 16701716 specialized in paleography and Greek; this printing includes his preface and Prolegomena and extensive commentary in Latin below the main text. Using twelve new manuscripts in his research Küster significantly added to Mill's 16451707 collation.<br>Â Â Â Â The title-page printed in red and black features an => engraved vignette of the Virgin Mary enthroned above the Earth flanked by an eagle a lion a bull and an angel representing the Four Evangelists and there are => five additional large illustrative engraved vignettes functioning as headpieces in the text. The translation is the work of a number of English Catholic priests but principally of Gregory Martin who fled to France in 1568 because of persecution in their native land and under the direction of Dr. later Cardinal William Allen founded the English College at Douai. The college moved for a short time to Rheims but subsequently returned as the title-page here attests.<br>Â Â Â Â The first edition of this translation was issued at Rheims in 1582 in over-sanguine hopes that its sale would be successful enough to underwrite the cost of a prompt production of the Old Testament. The two-volume O.T. did not appear however until 1609/1610.<br>Â Â Â Â The second edition of the Rheims N.T. is a revision of the first not merely a reprinting of it and contains a "Table of Heretical Corruptions" not found in the 1582 printing and a new preface. In an era of noticeable decline in the art of printing this Testament enjoys far better than average typography. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Darlow & Moule 198; Herbert 258; STC 2989; ESTC S102510. Some foxing and age-soiling in early leaves; this similarly at rear starting around p. 640 and most notable in Tables with also some dust-soiling and with light waterstaining across a good number of upper outer corners. Variously given as Chahta Chactas Chato Tchakta Chocktaw or Chactaw Choctaw is a language of the Muskogean family spoken by Native Americans who originally lived in parts of Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana before being relocated to Oklahoma. This translation was done by two Presbyterian missionaries the Revs. Alfred Wright and Cyrus Byington; the Book of a Thousand Tongues says that they were "substantially assisted by Joseph Dukes and W.H. McKinney educated Choctaws."<br>Â Â Â Â The Rev. Wright 17881853 spent over 30 years among the Choctaw people in Mississippi and Oklahoma. Darlow & Moule tells that the 1599 was "a revision of the Louvain Bible based on the Clementine Vulgate of 1592 and carried out by the Theological Faculty at Louvain. For while being additionally the uncommon first printing in America of the Gospels in English in any translation other than the King James or the Douai-Rheims version this is also the first privately accomplished translation of the Gospels printed in America.<br>Â Â Â Â George Campbell 171996 was a minister of the Church of Scotland theologian and principal of Marischal College. He wrote a number of theological works including a defense of miracles in response to David Hume and was noted for originality of argument as well as charity towards his opponents. This translation of the Gospels was first published in England in 1789; the work consists of a preface and preliminary dissertations the actual translation and the notes with the whole being very scholarly resorting frequently to the Greek in the dissertations and notes.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Title-page and contents leaf with early inked inscriptions reading "Jas.
