Novum Testamentum. Juxta Exemplar Millianum. Typis Joannis Baskerville.
Oxonii Oxford: E Typographeo Clarendoniano 1763. 8vo pp. iv 676. Near-contemporary tree calf spine elaborately gilt in compartments red morocco label marbled endpapers edges yellow. Some light toning and spotting. Expertly rebacked by Bernard Middleton with old backstrip laid down hinges relined. An attractive copy. In 1758 Baskerville proposed the casting of a new set of Greek types to the Oxford University Press and they ordered 2000 copies of this octavo New Testament plus 500 in quarto to be printed with the resulting type - which ended up being its only use. Negative critical reception may have contributed to its abandonment but Baskerville’s Greek face has recently been reassessed by Gerry Leonidas as an important predecessor of more modern types if perhaps not quite as elegant as that used by the Foulis press that had fallen afoul of an arbitrary typographic orthodoxy. (Bible. New Testament. English.)
The Text of the New Testament of Iesus Christ Translated out of the vulgar Latine by the Parpists of the traiterous Seminarie at Rhemes. Whereunto is added the Translation out of the Original Greeke commonly used in the Church of England. the whole worke preused and enlarged in divers places. by W. Fulke.
Londini London: Impensis G.Bishop. 1601. Folio pp. xlii 378 381-914 10. 20th-century half sheep pebbled cloth boards spine divided by raised bands black morocco label. Title-page trimmed and mounted final leaf also mounted a few smaller repairs to early leaves small wormhole in blank margin some foxing and occasional light marginal dampstaining. Spine rather rubbed and darkened and sometime furbished worn at ends and joints just starting to crack at head. The second edition of Fulke’s tendentious and influential comparison of the Douay-Rheims and Bishops’ translations of the New Testament with his notes and commentary intended to refute the arguments on which the former version was based. Fulke’s work with the two texts in parallel columns the Catholic in roman type and the Church of England version in italic sold better in England than the Douai Bible ever had bringing its language to a wider readership and becoming indirectly responsible for its influence on the coming King James version. [BIBLE - NEW TESTAMENT - MAORI].
Ko te Kawenata Hou a to tatou Ariki a te Kai Whakaora a Ihu Karaiti. He mea whakamaori mai no te Reo Kariki.London printed for the British and Foreign Bible Society 1894. 8vo. Publisher's brown cloth.
250 2 blank pp.Eighth edition of the New Testament in Maori and a slightly corrected edition of the controversial revision of 1887. The first serious edition of the New Testament in Maori translation had appeared in 1837. Subsequent editions followed until a large revision was made in the fifth edition of 1852. By 1884 it was felt that a new revision should be made to correct the numerous misprints and incorrect translations. The resulting edition appeared in 1887 and is considered "the finest Maori book of the 19th century" Lineham. However it was highly unpopular with its intended audience because for most of the Maori the older Bible text had a spiritual status and memorization of the Bible was highly respected. Despite the objections a new edition appeared in 1894 which is the present edition. Together with the 1887 edition it is considered to be one of the "greatest Maori publications of the 19th century" Lineham. The publication of this eighth edition was overseen by the same scholars who had prepared the previous one. The text was supplied by William Leonard Williams 1829-1916 future bishop of Waiapu and an eminent scholar of Maori who also corrected the proofs as far as signature H. The remainder of the text was corrected by Robert Maunsell 1810-1894 a missionary and authority on the Maori language. With a library stamp of the "Waikato Bible House Hamilton" and a 1957 owner's inscription on the front endpaper. Some pages near the endpapers slightly foxed. Otherwise in very good condition.l Darlow & Moule 6657; Williams Bibliography of printed Maori 876; cf. 32 “606” = 604; 16 146 50; 55 1 pp.First edition of by far the best edition of the Syriac New Testament published before the 19th-century edited by Aegidius Gutbier which remained the standard Syriac text until Samuel Lee's 1823 edition. For the first book the gospel of Matthew it includes Gutbier's Latin translation of the Syriac at the foot of the page. With the New Testament are two complementary works by Gutbier produced in matching format and intended to accompany it: his Syriac lexicon giving the Syriac words with their Latin equivalents followed by an index of the Latin words; and his extensive notes on the Syriac text of the New Testament with alternative readings from the many sources he examined. Accesservnt & huic editioni Libri græce scripti qui vocantur Apocryphi ; cum interlineari interpretatione Latina ex Bibliis complutensibus deprompta
Antverpiae: Ex officina Christophori Plantini 1584. Folio 6 parts in 1; pp. 8 186 2; 128; collating: ¶ⴠA-Yâ´ Zâ¶; Aa-Qqâ´; woodcut device on title page; bound with: Biblica Hebraica Antverpiae 1584 Hebrew-Latin Old Testament Greek-Latin Apocrypha etc. in various pagings from back of book viz.: pp. 20 183 1; 283 1; 84; 203 1; collating from the back: †ⴠ‡ⶠA-OⶠPâ¸; a-xⶠy-z⸠aa-ggⶠAA-RRâ¶; in all 551 leaves; text in double column in Hebrew Greek and Latin; early 18th century calf blindstamped panels on covers red morocco label on spine; covers with dampstains corners bumped and showing small cracks starting at the extremities of the joints occasional light minor dampstaining but in all a very good and reasonably sound copy. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. Mag." bookplate dated April 4 1683 - possibly the date of his matriculation at Magdalene College Cambridge. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. See Darlow & Moule 4645 and 5106: "This forms the latter half of the complete Bible in the original languages with an interlinear Latin translation; the whole reprinted from the Antwerp polyglot"; Voet A2 p. 320. Ex officina Christophori Plantini unknown

[Bible in Greek. New Testament]. [In Greek letter:]
Tes Kaines Diathekes hapanta. Novi Testamenti libri omnes recens nunc editi: cum notis…Roberti Stephani Iosephi Scaligeri & Isaaci Casauboni.

London: John Bill 1622 This Jacobean Greek New Testament is apparently the third Greek New Testament printed in England following a version printed in 1587 by Thomas Vautrollier and reprinted in 1592. Following the Greek New Testament text are 147 pages of comments and vaiant readings by esteemed scholars Robert Estienne 1503-1559 Joseph Scaliger 1540-1609 and Isaac Casaubon 1559-1614. . Contemporary calf blindstamped triple rule on covers edges stained red. Old label on spine with title in manuscript. . Octavo. . Text in double columns. Printer's mark on title copied from Robert Estienne's device. Royal arms on verso of title-page. Pages 87 and 317 misnumbered 58 and 297 respectively. Corners front joint lightly worn some worming to back cover. Lacks front free endpaper fore-edge of title browned expected signs of use for a portable Bible. Early annotations on title-page. A good clean copy of a rare book. It is said that permission to use the Estienne printer's device was first granted to the London printer John Norton by Paul Estienne while on a visit to England as a mark of admiration for his printing. It was then used by John Bill. See McKerrow Printers' & Publishers' Devices in England and Scotland 1485-1640 p. 125.
John Bill,

[BIBLE IN LATIN. New Testament].
The Lorsch Gospels.

New York: Braziller 1967 Bound in quarter vellum over red cloth boards title in gilt on spine and a twenty-four page introductory text in gray wrappers. . Two volumes folio including a complete facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels from the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia Rumania and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome. Both in fine condition in publisher's cloth slipcase. One of 1000 copies. Includes six color engravings from photographs by Robert Braunmüller and many color-printed plates though most of the production consists of high-quality monochrome plates. After centuries of separation the four parts which comprise the Lorsch Gospels were united in the Coronation Hall of the Holy Roman Empire in Aachen Germany on the occasion of the 1965 exhibition of the Council of Europe "Charlemagne: His Achievements and Influence." The respective owners cooperated to photograph the entire manuscript and the ivory covers during the exhibition. Thus a foundation was laid for the reconstruction of the manuscript in this fine facsimile edition which must serve in the place of a unified whole.
Braziller, hardcover
