Includes all books of the New Testament and The Book of Proverbs. Inner lid also mentions "cover for single volume" but we're not certain what that should include. The box has a hinged lid and Christmas holiday theme print on the outside with poinsettias and snowmen in an Art Deco design. The box is rubbed but is structurally sound with old clear tape repairs at two corners of the top lid. The booklets are in very good condition no names or other markings. Soft Cover. Title-pages in black and red with Pickering anchor and dolphin device. Includes the editor's preface Apparatus Hellenisticus a list of books consulted the text with running commentary followed by a list of Citata et parallela. Following the Greek New Testament text are 147 pages of comments and vaiant readings by esteemed scholars Robert Estienne 1503-1559 Joseph Saliger 1540-1609 and Isaac Casaubon 1559-1614. . Contemporary calf blindstamped triple rule on covers edges stained red. Old label on spine with title in manuscript. . Octavo. . Text in double columns. Printer's mark on title copied from Robert Estienne's device. Royal arms on verso of title-page. Pages 87 and 317 misnumbered 58 and 297 respectively. Corners front joint lightly worn some worming to back cover. Lacks front free endpaper fore-edge of title browned expected signs of use for a portable Bible. Early annotations on title-page. A good clean copy of a rare book. It is said that permission to use the Estienne printer's device was first granted to the London printer John Norton by Paul Estienne while on a visit to England as a mark of admiration for his printing. Two volumes folio including a complete facsimile of the Lorsch Gospels from the Biblioteca Documentara Batthyaneum in Alba Julia Rumania and the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana in Rome. Both in fine condition in publisher's cloth slipcase. One of 1000 copies. Includes six color engravings from photographs by Robert Braunmüller and many color-printed plates though most of the production consists of high-quality monochrome plates. After centuries of separation the four parts which comprise the Lorsch Gospels were united in the Coronation Hall of the Holy Roman Empire in Aachen Germany on the occasion of the 1965 exhibition of the Council of Europe "Charlemagne: His Achievements and Influence." The respective owners cooperated to photograph the entire manuscript and the ivory covers during the exhibition. New Testament ONLY. 1 f. pp. 7891012; 19 plts. <br><br>Present here is the extracted New Testament from => the first folio Bible printed in America from the press of the printer whom Ben Franklin called the "Baskerville of America." Being also only the fourth complete Protestant Bible in English printed in the former British colonies its text is the standard King James version printed in double-column format in roman type; and Thomas's production is famous for its typography its achievement in size the pages are 15.5" tall and especially its illustrations. The plates 19 of them were engraved by four of America's greatest artisans: J. Norman Alexander Doolittle Joseph H. Seymour and Samuel Hill.<br>Â Â Â Â "An alphabetical table of proper names" was planned but not printed as indicated by the catchword on the final page; the table does appear in the quarto edition Thomas printed the same year. This volume does contain at its end the whole Bible's "Index to the Holy Bible" and its several "tables" of Weights Measures and Coins; Time; Offices and Conditions of Men; and Kindred and Affinity. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Hills 29; O'Callaghan 38; Herbert 1353; Rumball-Petre Rare Bibles 171; Evans 23186 Wright Early Bibles of America pp. 7488. 18th-century mottled calf nicely rebacked with edges of boards renewed and text block resewn. Old waterstaining from light to severe throughout extending across text and image areas of plates with very variable impact; age-toning occasional staining and off-setting from plates in only the usual degrees. Lower margins display some notable chips and purposeful paper tear-aways and a good many closed tears; only the latter reach sometimes into text without loss. Several plates have had closed tears neatly repaired from the rear; the plate of Mary Magdalen and the final leaf of the last Table show OLD replacement of paper where original paper was torn away from blank areas; the copy retains the old dog-earings and page-creasings of long use and bears pencillings on its final leaf. => A copy that has seen much happen to it over its more than 200 years of existence; still a sturdy interesting and imposing copy of this impressive early American New Testament. The Textus Receptus of the Greek New Testament and a typographic masterpiece of the French Renaissance. Both iconic Estienne woodcut printer's devices: B1 snake and tree on title-page and repeated on 273 and the classic St. Paul standing under an olive-tree on the last lead. Woodcut initials and headpieces woodcut borders for the canons all pages ruled in red. 504 pages: 32 272 i.e. 268 204. Eighteenth-century red straight-grained morocco gilt spine gilt in compartments edges gilt painted and gauffered matching red and gold. Robert Estienne held the office of royal printer and this is his masterpiece a luxurious folio printed using all three sizes of Claude Garamond's fine Greek fonts 20 point gros-parangon Royal Garamond used here for the first time for the main text as well as 16 point gros-romain and 9 point cicero for the marginalia and notes. The production of the gros-parangon type was paid for by King Henry II. Armstrong 52 Robert Proctor said of this Greek type that: "it was and is by far the best type of its kind that has ever been cut.for evenness of colour for precision of casting and for the exactness of alignment and justification these founts are unsurpassed." Updike 237. Truly lovely with only the following minor defects: title-page has a short closed tear deep in the gutter could be repaired but not necessary a few spots of minor staining but no foxing on a few pages and not in the text. Extremities rubbed consistent with an antique binding that has been used carefully -- boards showing a little at one corner and lightly here and there on the edges but the binding is completely sound and flexible and without bumps or any signs of misuse. Every page is complete and without edge tears or markings. With an engraved vignette on the title-pages and an engraved alphabet leaf at p.2; a little browned and dusty here and there. Contemporary red morocco very richly gilt gilt-panelled backstrips with black labels. § A superb copy of a renowned Greek edition of the Bible with a fascinating association. This copy was in the choice Greek library of Sophia Streatfeild; prior to that there is the bookplate of an earlier Streatfeild with their motto “Data Fata Sequutus†sic and the modern bookplate of Joseph M. Gleason whose library was at Lone Mountain College in San Francisco until they sold it en bloc to John Howell-Books who dispersed the books far and wide. This book recently turned up in a yard sale in Central California and was bought by a scout purportedly for $5.Sophia Streatfeild was a brilliant classical scholar a stunningly beautiful woman and a renowned flirt whose charms and amorous conquests were recorded at length by Hester Thrale with equal parts admiration and exasperation: “a Young Coquet whose sole Employment in this World seems to have been winning Men's hearts on purpose to fling them away. How She contrives to keep Bishops & Brewers & Doctors & Directors of the East India Company all in her Chains so—& almost all at a Time would amaze a wiser Person than me". Thrale’s own husband was one of the many much taken with Streatfeild as was Samuel Johnson although he apparently regarded Fanny Burney’s Greek scholarship higher. The DNB heads her entry simply “Streatfeild Sophia bap. 1755 d. 1835 beautyâ€. A women of fierce intellect and wild reputation she died unmarried at around 80 years of age and remains one of the period’s more enigmatic figures. Her entire Greek library all 43 volumes bound to match was sold by the Robinsons in 1935 for £195. It was #1 in their catalogue 56. Officina Dommeriana unknown
