‎New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York 2012. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German plus twenty-five original leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a cloth clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued Bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk-Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each of the leaves the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. <br> <br> The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated Bibles included in the collection. This is one of fifty regular copies numbered by hand. A deluxe issue with six additional illustrated leaves is also available for $3500. hardcover books‎

‎Cambridge:: Printed by J. Smith 1817 1816. 1817. 2 volumes. Small 12mo. iv 600; 601-821 1 2; 250 2 pp. Original crimson blind- and gilt-stamped straight grained morocco all edges gilt. Within slip-case bound in red cloth gilt-stamped back "Foredge Paintings" likely the box dates from the time of the fore-edge painting. With two lovely fore-edge paintings painted on the fanned edges; not labeled but the scenes are of British churches. Provenance: Carnegie Book Shop New York Dec 14 1965 - sold to: Roland S. Bond Dallas TX. Probably this is the Louis H. Silver d.1963 Chicago copy sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries Nov. 16 1965 sold to Carnegie Book Shop NY. The volume was described as "one vol. bound in 2 which was an oversight as the 2nd title is deep within the second vol. Silver was a lawyer engineer and Chicago hotel owner Gold Coast Hotels who was a trustee of the Newberry Library. The bulk of his collection was purchased through his agent the noted bookseller John F. Fleming and brought a reported NY Times May 15 1964 price of 2.75 million dollars. / The University of Texas Ransom Center reports: "In June of 1963 Silver was diagnosed with terminal cancer and enlisted Fleming's help in selling his substantial library. Silver had very specific demands for the sale—his library was to be sold en bloc and he should receive no less than $2.2 million for it. Fleming made contact with several auction houses but on October 27 1963 Silver died before any action towards a sale could be completed. Silver's estate represented by Clarence A. Beutel and Silver's wife Amy wanted the search for a buyer to continue according to Silver's specifications. / On November 15 1963 the University of Texas at Austin expressed interest in the collection. Fleming began negotiations with Dr. Harry Ransom Chancellor of the University of Texas at Austin. Within a month Ransom had $2.75 million in cash for the sale. Silver's estate though was feeling hesitant about the sale. The first problem was that they did not want to pay Fleming his $200000 commission. The second was that they felt pressured to keep the Silver Library in Illinois by selling it to the Newberry Library instead. In the end that is what the estate chose to do. On May 13 1964 the Newberry Library bought the Silver Library for $2.75 million. / Under Illinois law Fleming as a property broker should have earned his commission when he produced a ready willing and able buyer. There is no requirement that a sale with that buyer must occur. Since Fleming produced his buyer he requested his commission. When the Silver estate refused Fleming filed a lawsuit in Illinois on August 6 1964. The estate was granted summary judgment and the case was dismissed. The court found that since many of the books were damaged and the University of Texas did not examine the books prior to agreeing to buy them it would not have actually been willing to commit to the sale. Fleming appealed to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In John F. Fleming Incorporated v. Beutel 395 F.2d 21 the appellate court remanded the case after finding that the lower court was incorrect in granting summary judgment. The appellate court ruled that when one was dealing with older books some damage was par for the course and so the buyer would have been willing to go through with the sale. However rather than continue the court battle Fleming settled out of court for $92000 on December 17 1968. / The Newberry Library took possession of the Silver Library and against Silver's wishes discarded one third of the books as surplus and auctioned them." Hans Gram played organ in the late 18th century. The Pierce family's early days in America perhaps coming as early as about 1620 were spent largely in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and their legacy includes Benjamin Pierce governor of New Hampshire 1827-1830 as well as ten generations spent in what is now an historic landmark of seventeenth-century architecture currently serving as a museum in Dorchester Massachusetts. It is difficult to place exactly which Benjamin Pierce and James Pierce this copy belonged to in the large and lively family. Evans 22351 Printed by Joseph Bumstead for David West unknown books‎

Title-page with large woodcut vignette of arms of Cologne lion and gryphon rampant with and three crowns; numerous illustrations by Anton Woensam and ornamental initials throughout. Ff. 8 CCCXXV 1 LXXXVII i.e. 85 5. 1 vols. Folio. Cologne 1527 : Quentel's Protestant Bible in Latin. The first Protestant Bible in Latin edited by Johan Rüdel Rudelius printed in Cologne by Peter Quentel or Quentell and notable for the wood engraved illustrations by Anton Woensam Anton von Worms particularly those at the head of each of the four gospels. Matthew faces an angle who is touching his stylus; a lion is seated beside Mark; a bull with Luke; and an eagle stands beside John.<br/><br/>Quentel was the printer of Tyndale's quarto Cologne English New Testament known from a single surviving fragment in the Grenville Collection where this same illustration to Matthew appears. It is a reasonable inference that each of the four gospels would have carried an illustration. The project which had "'got as far as the letter K' the signature that would have taken the work well into Mark" ODNB was unfinished at the time of Tyndale's flight from Cologne in 1525. Quentel's print shop was raided but sheets of the first gospel translated from the original Greek and printed in English soon began to circulate in England. Tyndale settled in Worms where Schöffer completed an octavo printing of the first complete English New Testament in 1526 a facsimile of the Grenville fragment and its illustration were published in 1871.<br/><br/>The blocks for the illustrations evidently survived the raid on the Quentel's shop and are used here at the head of each of the four gospels.<br/><br/>A notable edition in the history of the printing of the Bible. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England. 8 1279 1; 186 2 pp. plus terminal blank. 1 vols. 4to signed in 8's 195 x 143mm. The Uncommon Quarto Printing. The first edition of the Septuagint printed in England with the Scholia the scarce printing in quarto format. The text is derived from the Sixtine text and edited by John Biddle 1615-1662 the Unitarian controversialist who was imprisoned by the Parliamentary Commissioners for his religious views. <br/>The SCHOLIA . has a separate title-leaf register and pagination. The same setting was imposed in both quarto and octavo formats the latter with rules separating the columns of text. In regard to institutional representation the edition in quarto is much more uncommon than that in octavo: ESTC locates 4 copies of the quarto printing in North America as opposed to 19 of the octavo printing. Occasionally Daniel's reprint of the New Testament is bound up with the octavo printings to form a complete Bible. Brunet cites that format but notes the sale of a copy on "Gr. Pap." presumably a copy in this format. Over the last 35 years ABPC records sale of one copy in quarto 1999 and four in octavo. A characteristic gathering of the three texts the Bible being the Geneva-Tonson-Junius version in an edition that is a very close reprint of Barker's 1607 edition. The general engraved title is undated and the sectional full title-page for the NT is dated 1611 but the printer's colophon at the end is dated 1612. The text of the Apocrypha is included as a part of the contiguous whole. The edition of the Genealogies which is here bound prior to the Bible is one of the several folio printings attributed to Beale that are partially sorted as to minute variants in STC and ESTC; however this example does not conform to the variants in ESTC in regard to the line-breaks in the side note on A1V. The present edition of the Sternhold and Hopkins Psalms includes some music settings. This is among the last folio London printings of the Geneva text the standard text of 16th century Protestantism and the text referenced by Shakespeare Donne Bunyan et al. The bible of Sophia Augusta Brown 1825-1909 wife of John Carter Brown herself an active bibliophile who helped her husband build his library and oversaw its stewardship after his death. Sophia Augusta was 34 and John Carter Brown 61 when they married after a brief courtship on June 23 1859. That event is recorded in the family record between the Old and New Testaments as are the births and marriages of the couple's three children--John Nicholas Brown Harold Brown and Sophia Augusta--the marriages of the two sons and the death of John Carter Brown "dearly loved Husband & Father" on June 10 1874. The younger Sophia Augusta Brown married banker and businessman William Watts Sherman 1842-1912 whose Newport RI house is an architectural landmark.<br/><br/>The daughter of Patrick Browne an Anglo-Irish jurist and member of Her Majesty's Council of the Bahamas and Harriet Thayer of Providence a direct descendant of Roger Williams Sophia Augusta Brown was "an indomitable force in an era when women were discovering a role for themselves in the charitable sector . From her sons' earliest age Sophia Augusta ensured they would develop an appreciation for the care condition and housing of books . John Nicholas and Harold often accompanied their mother to booksellers and private collectors. At an early age they were shown priceless works: a Columbus letter the papers of Leonardo daVinci a note by Galileo . On his trips to Europe as an adult John Nicholas was expected to report back . with his assessment of the books he encountered . Very scarce first edition of the important Rheims New Testament the first Roman Catholic version in English translated from the Vulgate.<br/>Like the Geneva Bible the Rheims New Testament was "produced by religious refugees who carried their faith and work abroad. Since the English Protestants used their vernacular translations not only as the foundation of their own faith but as siege artillery in the assault on Rome a Catholic translation became more and more necessary in order that the faithful could answer text for text against the 'intolerable ignorance and importunity of the heretics of this time.' The chief translator was Gregory Martinc. 1542-1582 . Technical words were transliterated rather than translated. Thus many new words came to birth. Not only was Martin steeped in the Vulgate he was every day involved in the immortal liturgical Latin of his church. The resulting Latinisms added a majesty to his English prose and many a dignified or felicitous phrase was silently lifted by the editors of the King James's Version and thus passed into the language" Great Books and Book Collectors 108. While Martin was responsible for the translation the controversial textual annotations in defense of Catholic doctrine are attributed to Richard Bristow one of the supervisors of the project; most copies of this edition were purportedly suppressed and destroyed because of these notes some of which were removed from later editions. The New Testament was issued separately and first in the hope that its successful sale would finance prompt production of the Old Testament; the two-volume Old Testament did not however appear until 1609-10 due to insufficient funds. ‎Birmingham: John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763. The third variant of the Subscriber's list with the most names ending with that of the Hon. Charles York Esq Attorney General. 1146 pp. 1 vols. Folio. Bound in full dark blue straight-grained morocco covers tooled in gilt with wide Greek key and drawer handle border with floral cornerpieces narrow gilt filet-bordered rectangles tooled all over with drawer handle and sunburst tools and semé off small dots with central gilt-stamped L with crown spine with six double raised bands titled in one compartment stamped with owner's name "Frederic Powys" in another and the rest richly gilt a.e.g. pink endsheets by Staggemeier and Welcher with their circular pink paper label on front pastedown. Front joint and headcap with conservation repairs of the highest quality light foxing to text. The third variant of the Subscriber's list with the most names ending with that of the Hon. Charles York Esq Attorney General. 1146 pp. 1 vols. Folio. Baskerville's Masterpiece in Staggemeier & Welcher Binding. The 1763 edition of Baskerville's Bible has always been recognised as his masterpiece and is one of the high-points in the history of printing in Britain. This beautiful and monumental binding can be closely dated because Thomas Powys formerly MP for Northamptonshire was created Baron Lilford in 1797 and Staggemeier & Welcher are recorded in partnership on Villiers Street as of 1799. By 1810 Welcher was in business alone at that address. The Hon and Rev. Frederic Powys whose name appears on the spine was the third son of the first Lord Lilford; he married in 1807. Whether the binding was commissioned for his taking holy orders or on the occasion of his marriage can only be conjectured. A landmark of printing in a splendid binding. Nixon p. 184; Gaskell Bibliography of John Baskerville 26; Ramsden p. 135. Provenance: Frederic Powys his name tooled in gilt to spine Lilford Library booklabel John Baskerville, Printer to the University unknown books‎

First edition of the New Testament translated into modern Greek. Bilingual text Koiné and Modern Greek in two columns. 24 452; 1-314 2 ff. Volume II: leaf 4a2 i.e. 278 largely torn away and with two later blank leaves inserted 4a3 i.e. 279 defective at lower gutter with some narrow loss of text. 2 vols. 4to. First Edition of the New Testament in Modern Greek. First edition of the New Testament translated into modern Greek. An important and attractive publication sponsored by the States General of Holland to foster amity between the Greek and Reformed Churches. The modern Greek was prepared by the monk Maximus of Gallipoli and the edition was authorized by the Patriarch of Constantinople Cyril Lucarius who contributed a Preface. The edition is reported to have consisted of some 1500 copies. The rationale behind the preparation of this text was much the same as the impetus leading to the publication by Elzevier of a modern Greek translation of the Dutch Reformed Catechism in 1648.
