From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" Inserted leaf from the Bible printed by Robert Aitken Philadelphia 1782 from Deuteronomy; and 8 illustrations. 34 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Because of this official endorsement and the reasons behind its production the Aitken Bible is often referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution" Grabhorn Bibliography 131 Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell at the Sign of the Open Book unknown books

BIBLE; Stennett Joseph translator
A Version of Solomon's Song of Songs; Together with the XLV. Psalm
London: Printed for Dan. Brown at the Black Swan and Bible without Temple-bar and Andr. Bell at the Cross-keys and Bible in Cornhil 1700. First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett 1663-1713 the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips my Spouse that move with skill / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire despite appearances: "some have denied that Solomon wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood however as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm which Stennett also translates here. Wing B2633AC ESTC R212810. We locate four institutional holdings in North America Emory Huntington NYPL and the American Baptist Historical Society; ESTC adds Harvard but that appears to be an error. A scarce early English translation of the most lyrical book of the Old Testament in a handsome contemporary binding. Small octavo measuring 6.5 x 4 inches: xxiv 40. Contemporary full red paneled morocco gilt raised bands spine compartments decorated in gilt marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Old ink prices to verso of front free endpaper. Terminal flyleaf with elaborately penned inscription: "Isaac Sharpe flourishes dono Patris 1719." On the rear pastedown is Sharpe's early "Coll. The Greek N.T. starts at the beginning of the volume and the Hebrew O.T. at the end with the Greek Apocrypha of 128 pages between them. Each Testament has its own title page and the mention of the Apocrypha on both suggests that it was intended to form an appendix to either of the Testaments if they were issued separately. Contemporary Scottish black morocco spine in six compartments red morocco lettering pieces in the second others with gilt saltire with small flowers covers framed with distinctive interlocking tool impressed individually. Red and black PRINTED book labels of Elisabeth Hall dated 1769 pasted onto "Dutch gilt" endpapers. Some modern glue is visible in the inner hinge of the lower cover of vol. 2. Two original binder's blanks at the front and back of both volumes. Suitable for exhibition and study. This well preserved set of Scottish bindings is further distinguished by FOUR copy-specific letterpress bookplates printed in red and black no doubt in Scotland which reads in full:

"Elisabeth Hall Her Bible. 20th June. MDCCLXIX."

Concerning this printed bookplate it would appear that the present volumes contain the only known impressions of it thereby meriting inclusion in ESTC and elsewhere.

The tools on the front cover of the bindings have not been matched with published examples but the spine treatment and endpapers are decidedly Scottish.

That the Psalms were printed in Edinburgh Alexander Kincaid 1763 leads us to the conclusion that the present bindings are not only Scottish but that the original owner of them Elisabeth Hall was certainly Scottish herself.

John Archdeacon's 1767 Cambridge Bible is not in the National Library of Scotland. Unsurprisingly NLS has four copies of Alexander Kincaid's 1763 Psalms two of which are in the Bindings Collection: Bdg.s.8072 and Bdg.s.1002. John Archdeacon unknown books

No other book designer / typographer from the history of printing can claim to have designed two complete folio Bibles each one highly regarded. Bruce Rogers 1870-1857 American typographer who invented the "Centaur" tyepface based on the Renaissance-period printing of Nicolas Jenson is considered by many to be one of the greatest book designers of the twentieth century. He designed books for the Riverside Press Cambridge when he cut his first typeface "Montaigne" named for the first book it appeared in "The Essays of Montaigne" 1903; he designed "Centaur" while working as house designer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1916 he worked for the Cambridge University Press and a few years later returned to the U.S. where he met William Edwin Rudge and was employed by him at his Mount Vernon Press. During this time he also designed books for Harvard University Press and served as typographic advisor to Lanston Monotype. In 1928 Rogers returned to England where he produced what many have called "the most important and notable typographic achievement of the twentieth century" being his Oxford Lectern Bible. The present work was done during his later years but is no less formidable in both size and scope and essential to any collection of his work.

___DESCRIPTION: Original publisher's red cloth with gilt-stamped illustration to upper board lettered in gilt to backstrip top-edge gilt quarto volume in matching red cloth with similar gilt motif to upper board and gilt lettering to backstrip with original glassine jacket and housed in a blue paper slipcase numerous flourishes and initials vintage bookseller ticket on rear pastedown; types used include Fred Goudy's Deepdene Italic Forum and Oldstyle type paper is 74 lb. 75 percent white linen rag paper from Barcham Green Mill in England elephant folio size 19.25" by 14"; "Making of the Bible" quarto size 11.5" by 8.5" pagination: Bible i-vi vii-xxii xxiii-xxiv 1-941 942 1 colophon; Making of the Bible 1-4 5-19 20-41 limited first editions of both volumes with the folio being one of 975 copies and the accompanying quarto being number 178 of 1875 copies.

___CONDITION: A very good copy of the folio with some professional restoration to the backstrip/joints some minor rubbing at edges the binding with only light dustiness gilt is bright with a few rubbed spots and the interior clean other than some minor soiling to the endpapers free of prior owner markings one very short closed tear to the upper margin of the dedication page to King James; quarto fine overall with some extremely light wear to the joints at the head and tail of the spine its glassine wrapper alas fair only as the spine has perished and we only have the panels/flaps its slipcase very good plus sturdy with some overall wear.

___POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and heavy book and therefore additional postage will apply as the standard shipping charge will not cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
