BIBLE IN ENGLISH
Holy Bible Abridged:
Very Rare Early American Edition of a ChildrenÃs Pocket Bible BIBLE IN ENGLISH. The Holy Bible Abridged: Or the History of the Old and New Testament. Illustrated with Notes and Adorned with Cuts. For the Use of Children. Two lines from Luke. Boston: Samuel Hall 1791. Early American edition and first Samuel Hall edition second Boston edition. There were only a total of five Children's bibles published in America before 1791. The First American edition was printed in Boston in 1782 by Robert Hodge for N. Coverly followed by a Worcester Massachusetts 1786 edition by Isaiah Thomas 1786 and 1788 Philadelphia editions and a 1790 New York edition. Our present copy was published the year after the New York edition. Thirtytwomo 4 1/8 x 2 3/4 inches; 104 x 67 mm. 4 vii-ix 8 18-173 1 pp. With frontispiece of Adam and Eve and fifty-nine crude but charming woodcuts illustrations depicting stories from the text meant to appeal to young children. The stories that have been abridged for use in this Bible generally consist of the more well- known stories which would be of interest to children such as Creation Adam & Eve and Jonah and the Whale from the Old Testament as well as the birth baptism and crucifixion of Jesus from the New Testament. Listed in Evans but not in Sabin. We could find no copies of this edition at auction and only one copy found at the Massachusetts Historical Society. All early American editions are rare and only two complete copies of the New York 1790 edition since 1976. There was the 1786 Worcester edition at auction in 2008 but it was incomplete. Contemporary marbled paper over boards repacked with matching paper. Inner hinges strengthened. Bound without endpapers. Some soiling and toning throughout. One leaf page 145 with some fraying to the edges not affecting text. Overall very good particularly for a childrenÃs book. The rarity of this book can somewhat be contributed to its very small size and that it was intended for the use of children. Something as delicate and tiny as this Bible in the hands of a child had little hope for a bright future. ìBy 1789 Bible story collections specifically for children had existed in the mother country for nearly a century an active market in the American colonies had not opened up. Neither American Protestants nor American Catholics of whom were growing in numbers seemed ready to give Bible stories to their children. In the 1780Ãs the American situation changed radically. Boston printers pirated NewberyÃs Holy Bible Abridged; in 1786 the astute Worcester printer Isaiah Thomas followed suit; and by 1815 The Holy Bible Abridged had been printed in urban and provincial print centers all over the America northeast.î The Bible for Children: From the Age of Gutenberg to the Present. The Holy Bible Containing the Old Testament and The New: Translated out of the Original Tongues and With the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised By His Majesty’s Special Command. Appointed to be Read in Churches.
Cambridge: Printed by John Baskerville Printer to the University 1763. Royal folio 573 unnumbered leaves. A2 1 B-13D2 a-e2 f1. English binding of contemporary full blue-green morocco covers with elaborate gilt border backstrip richly gilt with red morocco lettering pieces stamped in gilt "HOLY BIBLE" and at the foot "BASKERVILLE" gilt edges marbled endpapers. Inevitable slight signs of wear on such a huge book but in all a very good unrestored copy internally flawless. § First edition of Baskerville's masterwork in a magnificent contemporary English binding. Third issue of the subscribers' list as usual. "John Baskerville was a monumental figure in the history of English bookbinding and printing with contemporary accounts of his work ethic revealing a man deeply engaged in virtually every aspect of book production. Yet for most of his life and indeed for many decades afterwards he was decried as a mere amateur. Still other sources show an individual with highly idiosyncratic and paradoxical habits -- he lived with Sarah Eaves for nearly two decades out of wedlock; a devout atheist who was buried in his own backyard without Christian ceremony; a man who 'had wit but always against religion and decency'†F.E. Pardoe in John Baskerville of Birmingham: Letter-Founder and Printer 1975. Paradoxically after taking the position of Printer to the University of Cambridge on 1 December 1758 Baskerville produced one of the few great Bibles. It is a true masterwork expertly printed with impeccable attention to ink type spacing paper quality and ease of use. Published on 4 July 1763 “the adjective that inevitably comes to mind is ‘noble’ and the volume warrants the word. It was conceived and executed on a grand scale… to show that he had now learnt his craft and was able to practice it in a masterly fashion… and the result shows again that Baskerville must be placed in the very top rank of book designers†Pardoe 87. Morison and Day The Typographic Book 1963 write that “Baskerville’s folio English Bible printed for the University of Cambridge is the finest presentation of Holy Writ since Richelieu’s Latin Vulgate printed at the Imprimerie Royal†48. Biblia cum summariorum apparatu pleno quadruplicique repertorio insignita.
Lyon: Jacques I Mareschal for Simon Vincent 1519. 8vo 180 x 126 mm. 30 500 54 pp. with pagination errors. Title and first table printed in red and black text in two columns with printed marginalia indices and summary in 3 columns. Colophon on fol. RR4v. Publisher's woodcut device Baudrier no. 2 on title and final verso full-page woodcut showing the six days of Creation within ornamental border historiated woodcut initials throughout; red paragraph marks to opening page and red highlighting to the facing woodcut. Mainly faint marginal dampstain in upper margins light discoloration to outer margins. Contemporary Flemish blind-tooled calf over wooden boards sides with leafy roll-tool border enclosing central panel with intersecting triple fillets forming a saltire design the compartments filled with a repeated foliate tool arranged symmetrically one of two fore-edge clasps two catches; many deckle edges preserved worn a few small chips to leather pastedown endpapers renewed. Provenance: early ownership inscriptions on title: Mrr Cornelius Adamus ter Borch; and Siba Lÿken; contemporary marginal notes and some text markings crosses in margins and underlinings in first few books Genesis-Deuteronomy; abundant 17th and/or 18th-century philological annotations in Genesis and Exodus and in the indices including full page of notes on blank page 2E5v.A complete portable Bible printed in very small types containing an ample scholarly apparatus and finding aids for the use of theology students and scholars; this copy with contemporary annotations and in a contemporary blind-tooled calf binding probably Flemish. This compact glossed Bible densely and economically printed with no break between the Old and New Testaments is enlivened by hundreds of historiated woodcut initials from woodcut alphabets designed by Guillaume Leroy who also designed the six-part full-page woodcut of the Creation. Mareschal's useful "pocket" Bibles were bestsellers this being the fourth of six octavo editions from his press. They were among the first Bible editions to include a rhyming mnemonic Biblical summary by the minorite friar Franciscus Gothi in which each four-line verse summarizes a Biblical chapter. Occupying here the final two quires and called for in the colophon it is not recorded by Baudrier or Gültlingen. Possibly buyers had the choice of including it or not in their copies. Otherwise the text of Mareschal's octavo Bibles follows that of the Bible printed in Basel in 1509 by Johann Petri and Froben using the text edited by the Dominican Alberto Castellano and supplying for the first time marginal notes citing canon law. The apparatus includes four tables and a glossary of Hebrew names. As in the Petri editions a six-line commendatory poem by Matthias Sambucellus is printed on the title here with the first word of the last line incorrectly given as "Omne" instead of "Omine."The publisher Simon Vincent belonged to Lyon's powerful booksellers' guild the Compagnie des Libraires whose members helped Mareschal during his early years impressed by his skill conscientiousness and sobriety "a rare trait among printers of this period" notes Baudrier qualities which contrasted markedly with those of the printer Michel Topie whose press Mareschal had acquired in 1512 Baudrier 11:383.USTC 145003; Adams B-997; Pettegree & Walsby French Vernacular Books III: 57271. Claude de Huchin produced a Biblia Sacra for Antoine Vincent also in the year 1567 while Jean Frellon issued a sixth edition in 1568 seemingly on his own. This fifth Frellon edition resembles the former editions but has maps and other illustrations which were not in previous versions. As early as 1553 woodcut illustrations adorned Frellons editions of the New Testament. This is a rare edition of the Biblia Sacra oft overlooked and not found in the usual references. OCLC locates two copies at Universitatsbibliothek at Heidelberg OCLC no. 315584645 and Columbia University OCLC no. 83326666. The edition is recorded in French Books III & IV 2011: No. 57420. These bibles were all the rage in 16th century Lyonnais print houses; most editions issued one right after the other; for example there is an illustrated Latin Bible printed by Guliel Rovilium in Lyon also in 1567. Bible English Scott Commentary
THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS; WITH ORIGINAL NOTES AND PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS .
London: Printed for Bellamy and Roberts 1792. Four volumes bound in six. Quarto. Contemporary unlettered calf marbled endsheets spines gilt. Plates and maps some folding. Institutional bookplate and early gift inscriptions hinges cracked but still holding spine ends chipped scattered foxing and tanning burn scar to lower board of first volume scrape to spine of sixth volume. Still a sound useful set amenable to cosmetics. First edition of Thomas Scott's edition of the English Bible first published in 174 weekly numbers spanning 1788-92. The enterprise contributed to the bankruptcy of the publisher and Scott was saddled with considerable debt but his commentary has been described as "the greatest theological performance of our age and country" - Sir James Stephen quoted by Herbert. The title calls for a Concordance and accompaniments which does not appear in this set -- according to Herbert it is usually the separate 3rd edition of Powell's 1792 concordance and was published as a separate accompaniment in quarto format and in 8vo both as standalones. Given the binding configuration of this set it usually appears in four volumes it is possible that this set was bound up from the parts issue. The New Testament is bound in two volumes with general title in 1st volume only and what usually appears as volume one is here present in two volumes with the general title in the first and the second beginning with Ruth. ESTC locates three sets: BL Newport Central and Washington State. HERBERT 1366. ESTC T95096. Printed for Bellamy and Roberts unknown books

Bible in German
THE GERMAN BIBLE IN AMERICA. WITH 25 ORIGINAL LEAVES. Introduction by Don Yoder
New Haven; Bryn Mawr; New York 2012. 20; 20pp. text in both English and German plus twenty-five original leaves tipped into accompanying folders. Large folio. Fine. In a custom clamshell box. The German Bible in America has a long and significant history reflective of the European culture which gave it birth the local conditions of Pennsylvania where it rose to its greatest heights and the rich German-American culture created by emigrants and their descendants in the 19th-century United States. From the first American edition of a Bible in German in 1743 through the late 19th century numerous printers and publishers issued Bibles in various formats ranging from large folios intended for lectern use to smaller versions for personal study. This leaf book celebrates the range and richness of these productions indicative of the world of German culture in America in the 18th and 19th centuries as expressed through its most widely studied text in a series of twenty- five leaves. Each set contains two versions of the descriptive text one in English and the other in German with an introduction by Don Yoder Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies Folklore and Folk-Life at the University of Pennsylvania. Further text describes the printers of each of the leaves the circumstances under which they were printed and other attributes. Each leaf is enclosed in an individual folder. The German Bible in America is issued in an edition of sixty copies with fifty of the regular series and ten additional deluxe copies containing six extra leaves of illustrations from the illustrated Bibles included in the collection. This is one of fifty regular copies numbered by hand. A deluxe issue with six additional illustrated leaves is also available for $3500. unknown books
