‎The Dragmaticon, William of Conches' major systematic treatise on natural philosophy, was probably written in Normandy between 1144 and 1148. It was copied and widely circulated in no less than 80 manuscripts for more than 400 years. It was even translated into Catalan in the fifteenth century. The editio princeps, published in 1567 in Strasburg by Josiah Rihel and reprinted in 1967, was prepared by the Italian physician and humanist Guglielmo Gratarolo, who used just one manuscript he bought in Padua, then collated against another owned by Rihel, and often 'emended' (sometimes quite arbitrarily). The present edition, by another Italian, a philologist and classicist turned medievalist, provides for the first time a critical text, based on 40 selected manuscripts. A detailed introduction informs on William of Conches' works and career, as well as title, dating, aims, and the manuscript transmission of the Dragmaticon. Two registers of apparatus give a full documentation of both the sources and/or parallels and the meaningful variant readings of the 40 manuscripts used. The improvements on Gratarolo's edition are quite substantial. The critical edition of the early Catalan translation, edited by a known Catalan philologist, accompanies the Latin edition, making this volume all the more valuable. Languages: Latin.‎

‎This volume presents the first edition of the Letters of Iakovos Monachos addressed to the sevastokratorissa Eirene, sister-in-law of the Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143-1180). Writing in the late 1140s, Iakovos offers spiritual advice to Eirene, and affirms his support for her in times of trouble. This is a rare example of the correspondence of a Byzantine spiritual father and provides tantalizing glimpses into Eirene's difficult life. Both are significant figures in Byzantine cultural history, Iakovos as the author of the renowned Kokkinobaphos Homilies on the Theotokos and Eirene as a noted literary patroness. The Letters' style is striking. They are constructed almost entirely from a mosaic of quotations from the Cappadocian Fathers and other patristic authors, the most recent being Niketas of Herakleia. Very little can be attributed to the pen of Iakovos himself, leaving questions about his motivation but also incidental insights into the holdings of a monastic library. The Letters are preserved in a handsome contemporary manuscript, very probably a presentation copy made for Eirene or her heirs, and two fragmentary late sixteenth-century copies. The edition is accompanied by the usual apparatuses and indices, and a full introduction discussing the transmission of the text and setting out the context for Eirene's life and the correspondence. The book will be of interest to specialists in Byzantine spirituality, Byzantine epistolography, the history of the twelfth century, women's history, and Byzantine literacy. Jhts; ferner die Erweiterung der Sammlungen, die sich auch durch die Aufnahme von Briefen Augustins Korrespondenten bis zur Zahl von uber 200 Briefen in den spateren Jahrhunderten und schliesslich in den Ausgaben in grosserem Rahmen fortsetzte. Die grundsatzlich andere Form der Edition durch die Benediktiner von St. Maur in den Jahren nach 1679 und die wichtige jungste kritische Ausgabe von Goldbacher im CSEL werden gewurdigt. Ein Hinweis auf Joh. Divjaks Fund und Veroffentlichung von weiteren Briefen Augustins, die in dieser Ausgabe ihrer Entstehungszeit entsprechend eingefugt werden, und die Feststellung, dass uns heute in dem Corpus 310 Briefe, davon 253 von Augustins selbst, bekannt sind, schliesst diesen Abschnitt ab. ‎The fall of Acre in May 1291 marked the end of Crusader domination in the Holy Land. The two main Latin sources, both written within months of the catastrophe, are the anonymous Excidium Aconis and the Ystoria de desolatione et conculcatione civitatis Acconensis et tocius terre sancte written by a certain magister Thadeus of Naples. The first text was edited by dom Martene in 1724, the second by Paul Riant in 1873. For several reasons both editions were hard to use, unreliable, and in urgent need of being made more easily available. In a companion volume to this one, A Catalogue of Works Pertaining to the Explanation of the Creed in Carolingian Manuscripts (IPM, 63) over two hundred such texts, edited and unedited, have been identified, of which the texts edited here for the first time, with one exception, will make more of the corpus accessible. The texts are a product of the Carolingian Reform, an intense effort to raise the level of education of diocesan priests so that they could be knowledgeable instructors of the people. Their composers are anonymous, but they took time and trouble over these texts, not only in selecting, but also in reworking and rewording their sources for a particular audience or recipient. ‎Thanks to the fame and popularity he attained as a professor of rhetoric in fourth century Rome, C. Marius Victorinus (about 300 - post 362 AD) was awarded a statue in the Forum of Trajan (Jerome, Chron. a. 2370 = 353 AD). His treatises on logic and his translations of Aristotle and Porphyry are lost, but three of the numerous works he wrote before his accession to the Christian community still survive. A handbook on grammar (Ars Grammatica), a treatise on definitions (De definitionibus) are integrally preserved, along with a commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, the role of which as a school handbook was relevant in fourth-century education. This commentary, known under the title Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam, offers an interesting insight in Victorinus' rhetorical teaching and in his exegetical method, based on the analysis he will later apply to St. Paul's writings. This is closely linked to the Aristotelian logic and deeply rooted in Victorinus' philosophical education, as especially witnessed by the first book of the commentary. Here, the explanation of rhetorical topics through visual and memory cues as the schemes and enumerations often meets the discussion of philosophical notions and problems, though these could seem not immediately useful to the forensic debate. The present volume contains a new edition of Victorinus commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, which appears more than a hundred years after the text published in the volume of the Rhetores Latini Minores (K. Halm, Leipzig 1863). The editor has thoroughly examined the whole manuscript tradition of the commentary, which has come down to us through about forty medieval and humanistic manuscripts. The apparatus is based on six sources, stemming from the VIIth to XVIth century. These offer a good witness of the different branches of the transmission and bear interesting variants. The text itself has also been considered in reference to the Latin language in use in the fourth century AD: therefore, many passages have been modified that Karl Halm had previously corrected according to the usage of classical Latin. Moreover, some short interpolations have been recognized. The comparative study of the Ciceronian entries and the direct tradition of the De Inventione has also shown that the odd text of some entries, corrected by Halm, should actually be preserved, since it stems from the copy used by Marius Victorinus and cannot be labeled as a transmission mistake. The notes following the Latin text discuss the editor's textual choices. The introductory section covers both the history of the reception of the Explanationes and a detailed analysis of the medieval manuscript tradition. Le present volume contient une nouvelle edition des Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam, qui parait plus qu'un siecle apres la publication du texte dans le corpus des Rhetores Latini Minores (K. L'edition est d'abord basee sur une analyse approfondie de la tradition, qui comprend environ 40 manuscrits du VIIIe au XVIe siecle; on a utilise pour l'apparat critique six temoins, qui offrent une bonne documentation des differentes branches de la tradition et presentent d'utiles variantes pour la constitution du texte. Le commentaire a ete revise en tenant compte des usages linguistiques du IVe siecle apres JC, ce qui a permis de modifier de nombreux passages que Halm avait corrige, ne considerant que le modele du latin classique. On a reconnu et isole des interpolations penetrees dans le texte, a part les deux deja signalees par Halm. L'etude comparee du texte des citations ciceroniennes et de la tradition directe du De Inventione a montre que certains passages, que le precedent editeur avait cru errones et modifies, remontent en fait a la copie utilisee par Victorinus et non pas a un accident de la tradition manuscrite. Les notes qui suivent le texte latin contiennent la discussion des choix en matiere de constitution du texte ; dans les chapitres introductifs on trouvera une section relative a l'histoire du texte des Explanationes et une analyse detaillee de la tradition medievale. ‎Until the present, the authentic commentary on Genesis by Remigius of Auxerre, the important late Carolingian school-master, has remained unknown. The commentary on Genesis first published in 1723 as the work of Remigius and which also appears in the Patrologia Latina under his name is actually the work of his teacher, Haimo of Auxerre. Bernard Pez, librarian of the Abbey of Melk and editor of the Pseudo-Remigian commentary has based his edition on only two manuscripts (out of 20) which by chance attributed his commentary to Remigius. What Pez did not know was that the manuscripts he used for his edition were part of a tertiary and late family of witnesses, one of whose primary attributes was the misattribution of Haimo's text to Remigius. Now, for the first time, thanks to the Corpus Christianorum, the authentic commentary of Remigius of Auxerre on the book of Genesis appears in print. This edition is based on the 10 extant manuscripts (as well as a collection of excerpts). In addition, the 20 extant manuscripts of Haimo's commentary on Genesis (which the editor is also preparing as a critical edition for Corpus Christianorum) are also thoroughly examined in order to resolve the disputed authorship of the two commentaries by these important school-masters. The new edition contains a thorough analysis of the sources of Remigius' work, setting it in the conext of Carolingian exegesis on Genesis by documenting the relationship between Remigius' commentary and the work of Alcuin, Claudius of Turin, Hrabanus Maurus, Angelomus of Luxeuil, Haimo of Auxerre and Adrevald of Fleury. This source analysis reveals that Remigius was attempting to compose a thoroughly literal commentary on Genesis, extending the exegetical agenda of Augustine's De Genesi ad litteram to the entire book of Genesis. It must be considered of great interest that the editor has discovered a number of passages that are ultimately derived from Jewish exegetical traditions. Languages: Latin.‎
