‎Ever since the publication of a pioneering study by Ernst Dummler in the Berlin Sitzungsberichte of 1890, the commentary on the Gospel according to St Matthew by Christian, a teacher at the Benedictine abbey of Stavelot-Malmedy, has continuously attracted a great deal of interest. With the exception of only a few scholars, who had access to a manuscript, most others had to base their studies on Migne, PL 196, cols. 1261-1504. That text reproduces the editio princeps of 1514, which was produced by the well-known humanist Jakob Wimpfeling in Strasburg. In his much-used work De scriptoribus ecclesiasticis Sponheim?s famous abbot Trithemius first mentions another name by which Christian was to become known, viz. Druthmar(us). Though occasionally adopted by authors and compilers of catalogues of manuscripts, this other name was more generally assumed to have been imagined by Trithemius himself; but although it certainly is not authentic, it really does appear in a fifteenth-century manuscript he may well have perused. The new edition (CCCM 224), which is completed by a section Rariora et notabilia and a set of extensive indexes, is based on no fewer than nine manuscripts and two ancient editions (1514 and 1530, both representing lost manuscripts), and since the commentary must have been written around 865, it is of no small interest that the oldest of all these hitherto unused manuscripts (W, in Wolfenbuttel) dates back to as early as the late ninth century.

‎Corpus Christianorum. Alcuinus De fide Sanctae Trinitatis et de incarnatione Christi. Quaestiones de Sancta Trinitate,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, approx. 250 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503542096.‎

‎Alcuin wrote his De fide sanctae Trinitatis et de Incarnatione Christi in 802, as Charlemagne was concluding his decades-long war in Saxony. Considered by many to be Alcuin's masterpiece, the De fide was one of the most widely read and circulated works in the entire Alcuinian corpus; today it survives in 100 medieval manuscripts. Alcuin wrote specifically to provide guidelines for the catechetical instruction of pagan Saxons. His short treatise thus provides rare, direct evidence for the content of early medieval missionary preaching. Together with several companion texts, including a credal statement, a litany, and a series of questions and answers addressed to Alcuin's pupil Fredegisus, the De fide sheds light on a wide range of Carolingian-era theological preoccupations, with discussions on topics as diverse as the procession of the Holy Spirit, the Incarnation, the two natures of Christ, and the resurrection of the body. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Eucherius Formulae spiritalis intellegentiae. Instructionum libri duo,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2005 Hardback, LI+234 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503006611.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Guillelmus de Conchis Glosae super Boetium,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1999 Hardback, CXLV+384 p., + 7 pl., 155 x 245 mm,. ISBN 9782503045818.‎

‎William of Conches is one of the most important and innovative thinkers of the first half of the twelfth century. This second volume in the projected series of editions of his works contains his widely influential commentary on Boethius' Consolatio Philosophiae (dated to about 1120). In this continuous, lemmatic commentary William gives a systematic and comprehensive interpretation of Boethius' masterpiece. He far surpassed previous commentators in depth, originality and comprehensiveness, thereby laying the foundations for future work on this text, most notably that of Nicholas Trevet (ca. 1300) and vernacular renditions. William's work, however, is not only of considerable importance for the medieval Boethian tradition, but also for the development of twelfth-century philosophical thought. It testifies to his keen interests in natural philosophy, discussing various themes such as elements, the movements of the planets, tides and winds, the enfolding of the cosmos, the generation of life, and human psychology. These passages were used and further developed in his famous work on natural philosophy, De philosophia, and in his Plato commentary. Other important themes which William addresses are the Neoplatonic theory of the soul, human knowledge, and free will and divine providence. He develops for the first time his famous hermeneutic instrument of the integumentum (the veil of fabumous or heterodox narratives, covering profound truths) and applies it to Boethius' employment of pagan myths and Neoplatonic doctrines. The Glosae super Boetium, written by one of the most representative intellectuals of his generation, then, is a highly instructive example of the intellectual preoccupations and achievements of the first half of the twelfth century. The edition is based on a thorough examination of all the available manuscript evidence. Languages: Latin.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Guillelmus de Conchis Glosae super Platonem,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, CXLVI+404 p., 4 b/w ill., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503050393.‎

A. Neschke-Hentschke, 2000), Plato's Timaeus as Cultural Icon (ed. G. Reydams-Schils, 2003), Plato's Timaeus and the Foundations of Cosmology (ed. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2011 Hardback, X+273 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503541396.‎

‎The Victorine and later Abbot of Vercelli, Thomas Gallus (?-1246) was renowned for his affective interpretation of the writings of Dionysius the Pseudo-Areopagite. His writings played a major part in the re-discovery of Dionysius in the thirteenth century, and in the general development of western mysticism, for example through his teaching on the 'spark of synderesis'. In this volume, Gallus's Glosses on the Celestial Hierarchy and his major commentary on the whole Dionysian corpus, the Explanatio, are edited in their entirety for the first time. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Exegetica Glossa ordinaria in Canticum Canticorum,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1997 Hardback, 454 p., + 2 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503047010.‎

‎Beryl Smalley proposed a programme for Glossa Ordinaria studies as long ago as 1961, consisting of the preparation of an edition of the gloss at the time it left the hands of Master Anselm of Laon and his circle. Such an edition would, she admitted, be 'un travail de longue haleine', but 'les etudes litteraires en beneficeraient aussi bien que les etudes theologiques'. Reviewing the situation twenty years later, Smalley regretfully noted that no one as yet has made a critical edition of any part of the Gloss. Another ten years passed before an edition of the Gloss was published: this, however, was no new edition but a facsimile - albeit a most handsome and useful one - of the first printed edition of the Gloss, Adolph Rusch's Strassburg edition of 1480/81. The present edition of the Glossa Ordinaria on the Song of Songs is offered as a contribution to the programme Smalley proposed. While it does not pretend to be a full critical edition of the text, since a fully comprehensive investigation of the entire manuscript tradition would have ensured that this particular part of the Gloss would remain unedited this side of the new millennium, Smalley's suggestion of reproducing the early text of the Glossed Song of Songs, a text based on manuscripts dated c. 1120 - c.1170. Smalley was quite right to claim that the importance of the Gloss as a whole is as much literary as theological, and perhaps this makes the Glossed Song of Songs a particularly appropriate part of the whole to make available. Ever since this book of the Bible was given the title Shir haShirim, the best of songs, its literary excellence has always been recognised. To medievalists, the pervasiveness of its influence on the literature of the Middle Ages, in Latin and in the vernaculars, is a commonplace, yet the text that medieval writers were influenced by was rarely sola scriptura. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Martianus Capella, Anonymus Glossae aeui Carolini in libros I-II Martiani Capellae De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii ,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, CLXXXI+472 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503534534.‎

‎This edition presents a comprehensive view of the oldest gloss tradition on books I-II of Martianus Capella?s De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii, a key text for Carolingian scholars. It furnishes descriptions of all extant manuscripts transmitting these glosses and outlines their stemmatic relationship. The relevant centres of glossing activity are indicated. The glosses are accompanied by an apparatus of variants both to text and gloss as well as by a source apparatus and traditio textus to the glosses. The edition of glosses is organized by lemma and in categories according to the nature of the content. Additions of second and third hands are noted. The comprehensiveness made possible by thorough examination of all extant manuscripts brings into focus the layering of annotations over time, the close cooperation between scribes, the presence of a ?core? corpus of annotations and the range and variety of material across the tradition. More generally, the glosses provide insight into how Martianus was read and understood in the ninth and tenth centuries. Martianus? rich blend of astral religion, classical mythology and pagan tradition had an enormous impact on Carolingian commentators. The earliest tradition of glossing on De nuptiis thus supplements our knowledge of how pagan culture was received in the early medieval West, raising important questions about the nature of this reception. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Glossae biblicae I,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, VIII+576 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503048918.‎

‎The subject of this edition is a group of about 20 glossaries containing predominantly biblical material in the form of glossae collectae, preserved in manuscripts dating from the 8th tot the 14th century, and representing all the fundamental branches of the so-called Leiden Group or Rz-Family of glossaries as far as their biblical component is concerned. Studied in the past almost exclusively with reference to its vernacular component, the material has recently attracted much renewed attention on account of its connections with Canterbury and the school of Theodore and Hadrian. Over the centuries these glossaries have been repeatedly modified and updated and have enjoyed wide diffusion. They represent one of the standard tools for the first approach to the text of the Bible, alongside other glossographic works such as Isidore's or Eucherius's. Most of the material, however, appears in print for the first time. The edition is organised in three sections and will occupy four volumes: Part 1 (vol. 1) will provide a detailed description of the manuscripts as well as the history of the glossarial material and the ramifications of the tradition. Part 2 (vol. 2 and 3) will present the texts: the choice of glossaries to be included in this section has been determined by the need to represent the most important branches of the tradition, by reference to which the remaining material may also be defined. Part 3 (vol. 4) will provide an Index glossarum: this index will enable the reader to see at a glance points of contact and divergence in the glosses on any specific biblical verse, and will also give account of sources and parallels. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Glossae biblicae II,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, IV+700 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503048932.‎

‎K. Jacobi, C. Strub (eds.);‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Petrus Abaelardus Glossae super Peri hermeneias,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, CVI+500 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503050690.‎

‎The commentary on Aristotle's Peri hermeneias is certainly one of the most important texts in the corpus of Peter Abaelard's works on logic. The author discusses the Aristotelian text in an unbiased and thorough manner without avoiding any difficulties, and thereby addresses all basic issues of classical logic and semantics. The text forms part of the so-called 'mixed commentaries' and is characterised by short self-contained systematic discussions within an explication of the Aristotelian text. Of particular significance are the discussions of predication (chapter 3), future contingentia (chapter 9) and modal logic (chapters 12-14). In 1927, this substantial commentary was edited by Bernhard Geyer. The edition was based on the only manuscript of the text then known to scholarship (Milan, Biblioteca Ambrosiana M 63 sup., fols. 45r-72r). In 1938, M. Grabmann discovered a second manuscript of the work (Berlin, Staatsbibliothek Preussischer Kulturbesitz, lat. fol 624, fols. 97r-146r). As L. Minio-Paluello has shown, the final part of Abaelard's text, which includes the long excursus on modal logic and the commentary on chapters 12-14, is accurately preserved only in this second manuscript. He edited this final part in 1958. A detailed comparison of the two manuscripts showed that the differences between them are so numerous and noteworthy that a new critical edition was necessary. Geyer's and Minio-Paluello's editions could be improved upon in several places. Aristotle's text in the version known by Abaelard is also included. Languages: Latin, English.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Arnoldus Gheyloven Roterodamus Gnotosolitos parvus,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, CLXXVII+641 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503051215.‎

‎Arnold Gheyloven (c. 1375/1420) was born in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). He studied liberal arts in Vienna, and canon law in Bologna and Padua. Around 1407 he joined the regular canons of the Windesheim monastery at Groenendaal near Brussels. He composed c. 30 works, among which the Gnotosolitos parvus ('Small Know Yourself'), which text has been preserved in one single manuscript (Liege, Bibliotheque du Grand Seminaire 6 F 18). Gheyloven wrote this text for students, preparing themselves for the priesthood in a paedagogium at Louvain or with the Brethren of the Common Life in Deventer. This Summa of moral theology, canon law, and spirituality shows what these young men had to learn with regard to faith and morals, the sacraments and the works of charity. Acting as confessors, they were supposed to pass on these moral senses to their penitents, in the century before the Reformation. Languages: Latin, English.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. A Gospel of Nicodemus preserved in Poland Euangelium Nicodemi in Polonia asseruatum,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, 440 p., 7 colour ill., 230 x 315 mm. ISBN 9782503526089.‎

‎This volume presents two related texts of the Gospel of Nicodemus from the little known Central European tradition: a late medieval Polish translation of the apocryphon from the codex of Laurentius of Lask and its Latin model as preserved in Krakow, Biblioteka Jagiellonska MS 1509. Both Latin and Polish versions are remarkable as they retain several archaic features attested in the earliest witnesses of the apocryphon but lost in the mainstream medieval traditions. The book begins with and introduction presenting the Latin and Polish traditions as well as the characteristics of the manuscripts edited in the volume. The edition itself is in fact a four-column synopsis displaying side by side the transliteration, the translation, and the transcription of the Polish Ewangelia Nikodema and the edition of the Latin Evangelium Nicodemi. For each text a concordance as well as lists of forms and frequencies have been added. Polish-Latin and Latin Polish glossaries of all words and expressions used in the text complete this second Instrumenta volume. Languages: English, Latin, Slavonic.‎

‎N/A;‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. M.-C. Garand Guibert de Nogent et ses secretaires,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1995 Hardback, 87 p., + 14 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503504506.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Raimundus Lullus Ha-Melacha ha-Ketzara. A Hebrew Translation of Ramon Llull's Ars Brevis Opera latina. Supplementum Lullianum III,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, LIV+195 p., 12 b/w line art, 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503541983.‎

‎Ramon Llull completed the Ars breuis in 1308. This short but very popular work extant in over seventy manuscripts was a concise and much more easily digestible version of the much longer Ars generalis ultima, the final redaction of Llull's Art. In Senigallia in the March of Ancona in July or August 1474, the Ars breuis was translated into Hebrew and then copied twice over the next couple of years. The colophon of the extant copy shows that these Jewish students of the Ars breuis used the work to attain unio mystica. This seems to be a unique example of a Christian work, described as being 'short in quantity but great in quality', knowingly being used by Jews for mystical purposes. The translator and copyists seem to have read and understood Llull's work through the prism of Abulafian Kabbalah. Abraham Abulafia (d. ca. 1291), a contemporary of Llull's, wrote numerous works dealing with the divine names and the combination of letters. He believed that the whole Torah was the names of God, and by manipulating the letters of the Hebrew alphabet, one could have knowledge of the divine and created world. This Jewish circle seemed to have understood the letters of the Lullian alphabet and the various combinations and compartments of the Ars breuis as leading to true mystical cognition. This volume presents the Hebrew edition together with the original Latin (based on a slightly revised edition of ROL 12 / CC CM 38) along with an English translation and detailed notes which show how the Jewish translator and copyists understood and used this work.

Languages: Greek, Italian.‎

‎Preaching was one of the main tasks of the Birgittine friars. Not surprisingly, a large part of the medieval manuscripts that survive from the mother house of the Birgittine order, Vadstena Abbey in central Sweden, are sermon manuscripts. In the Swedish and Scandinavian context they represent an exceptional source of knowledge about medieval history. This edition comprises 21 sermons of varying length dating from the late fourteenth to the early sixteenth century. They are published here for the first time, mainly from the compilers? autographs. These sermons were partly composed for a monastic target audience, partly directed to priests ab extra. Among other things, they tell about the striving for monastic and spiritual reform that issued from Vadstena. A large group consists of sermons of an admonitory content addressed to the nuns by the Confessor General. These sermons in particular give unique glimpses of the inner life of the monastery. The Autograph of Eriugena (CCAMA III), Brepols 1996. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Leo VI Sapiens imperator Homiliae ,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2009 Hardback, CCXXX+690 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503406312.‎

‎First ever critical edition of the corpus of forty-two Homilies by the Byzantine Emperor Leo VI the Wise (A.D. 886-912). The Homilies are highly rhetorical compositions and consist of panegyrics on ecclesiastical feasts and discourses on special occasions. They are gathered together here for the first time. Thirty-four texts were previously published in inadequate, antiquated and/or inaccessible editions. Another three remained unpublished. The critical edition of these important works of the emperor-scholar of the "Macedonian Renaissance" makes them easily accessible, responding to a desideratum of Byzantine Studies. The edition is preceded by an original, full-length introduction on the extensive manuscript tradition of the Homilies divided into five chapters. The first four provide a solid investigation of the more than a hundred surviving codices that contain the Homilies, and elaborate on their relationship to each other. The final chapter presents the editorial principles. The establishment of the text according to the modern requirements of textual criticism is accompanied by a detailed critical apparatus as well as an apparatus of sources and significant parallel passages. A series of indices completes the work. The book will appeal to specialists and students of Byzantine literature and civilization, philologists, historians, theologians and art historians alike, as well as specialists in patristic and medieval homiletics, classicists interested in the survival of the ancient Greek rhetorical and literary tradition, and linguists studying the Greek language in its medieval period. The texts can be used as teaching material at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Languages: Greek, English.‎

Languages: Latin.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1996 Hardback, 818 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503505190.‎

‎The second volume of the Bibliotheca Basiliana Vniversalis covers all the extant mss, translations and editions of Basil of Caesarea's Homiliae morales, and more than 300 homiletic type adaptations. In addition, it provides descriptions of a number of the mss and editions of the letters that were left out volume one, and of all the editions and translations both of the homilies and the letters from ca.1470 to the present. Besides the native tongue of Basil, some twenty other languages are represented. Throughout an attempt has been made at correcting some of the descriptions of the sixteenth- century composite editions which the homilies share with the letters and the ascetica. Also in this volume have been included many mss, editions and translations of the Vita s. Basilii of Ps.-Amphilochius (CPG 3253), the Laudatio of Ps.Ephraem (BHG 246) and the Laudatio of Ioannes XIII Glykys, Patriarch of Constantinople (1315-1319; BHG 262h) even when they were found in mss containing no works of Basil. The method employed in this volume is very similar to that adopted in the first volume. In the first three chapters all the corpora of the Homiliae and the Hexaemeron are described, in Greek and in eight ancient languages into which Basil has been translated, namely Arabic, Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopic, Georgian, Latin, Old Slavonic and Syriac. Chapters Four to Ten are home to some 6000 mss written both in Greek (Classical en Demotic) and the eight languages. The mss are housed in some 400 libraries whose locations span from the Atlantic Ocean to the Volga River. Chapters eleven and twelve provide extensive coverage of all the editions from ca.1470 to the present. Languages: English.‎
